ATM with Rs. 10 lakh gutted in fire

An automated teller machine (ATM) of the State Bank of India, reportedly containing Rs. 10 lakh, caught fire in Ghaziabad on Thursday, police said.

The incident took place at the Sanjay Nagar branch of the bank around noon.

Two fire tenders controlled the fire suspected to have been started by an electric spark.

Branch manager Sukhendra Singh said: “We have not assessed the loss till now but the ATM machine used to contain lakhs of rupees.”

Chhattisgarh: Minister’s house attacked

Suspected Maoists on Thursday opened fire on a Chhattisgarh minister’s house in Kondagaon district, killing one security guard, police said.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Lata Usendi was not in the house when three suspected Maoists, riding a motorcycle, fired at it this afternoon, Additional Director General of Police Ram Niwas said.

The security guard Narsingh Markam was seriously injured and succumbed in hospital, he said.

The assailants took away the weapon of Markam.

Smoking ban imposed in public places in Bulgaria

After several failed attempts from restaurant owners, Bulgaria’s Parliament has finally adopted a total ban on smoking in indoor public places.

The ban, which was approved today and comes into force one June 1, has stirred discontent among many Bulgarians, at least 40 per cent of whom are believed to smoke.

HC stays advertisement embargo on Sakshi Group ‎

In a relief to Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy-owned Sakshi newspaper and television channel, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday granted an interim stay on implementation of the state orders banning government advertisements to the media group.

The state government had on May 10 ordered a freeze on releasing advertisements to Sakshi newspaper and Sakshi channel.

Divorced women to get share in hubby’s property

Amid the opposition demand to make divorce more women-friendly, the government on Thursday approved fresh amendments in a bill pending in Rajya Sabha to give the wife a clearly defined share in husband’s immovable residential property.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, took up new amendments to the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill introduced in the Rajya Sabha earlier this month.

The government also decided to retain the mandatory six-month cooling-off period, which the bill had proposed to do away with in case of divorce with mutual consent.

62 infants dead in 90 days in a Srinagar hospital ‎

Over 62 newborns have died in the past three months at Srinagar’s only pediatric hospital GB Pant. The hospital is facing an acute shortage of trained staff and medical equipment.

“As an administrative measure, immediately Dr Javed Chawdhary, who is the Medical Superintendent Incharge of the Hospital, is being attached with Medical Education department,” M K Dwivedi, Commissioner-Secretary of Health and Medical Education, told reporters.

Yoga guru Ramdev’s trusts have lost their exemption from payment of Income Tax and have been slapped a notice of Rs 58 crore demand on the sale of their Ayurvedic medicines.

The I-T notice, for the assessment year 2009-10, on Haridwar-based Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust, Divya Yoga Mandir Trust and Bharat Swabhiman Trust have been slapped on the income of Rs 120 crore which the department has held as “commercial activities”, sources said.

Military activities reported near Israel-Gaza border

Gaza, Israeli tank fire wounded seven Palestinians in a farm field east of Gaza City on Thursday, Palestinian medical and security officials said.

A spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces initially denied tank fire was used in an operation against suspected terrorists approaching the border fence near the Karni crossing.

However, the IDF later confirmed that an initial investigation “suggests” that tank shells were fired.

Separately, Israeli forces carried out small operations in or near Gaza on Thursday morning, with officials on both sides giving conflicting accounts of events.

13-year-old girl raped by residential school teacher

A 13-year-old girl was raped allegedly by her residential school teacher, who was arrested after he tried to get her unborn child aborted in Fatehpur Chaurasi area, police said today.

The incident came to light earlier this month when she took ill after the teacher and a cook in Kasturba Gandhi
residential school tried to get her unborn child aborted, police sources.

After the class VI student fell ill she narrated the incident to her family and her father filed an FIR against
teacher Harnarian and cook Anuradha, police said adding that two accused have been arrested.

Six-year-old raped

A six-year-old girl was today raped allegedly by a 22-year-old youth in Bombay colony at Nandgram here, police said.

The minor was playing when the youth, a neighbour, entered her house and took her away on the pretext of buying
her food from the market,” SSP Ghaziabad Preshant Kumar said.

The accused then raped her in a deserted house in the colony and left her unconscious, he said.

Rape was confirmed after medical examination of the victim, he said, adding that the name of the youth will be
disclosed soon as he is pending arrest.

No religion-based reservation, says Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday rubbished demands of reservation for Muslims on the basis of religion and said the idea cannot work as it is not permitted by the Indian Constitution.

“Even if we want to do it (reservation on the basis of religion), we can’t do it because it is not possible due to the guidelines in the constitution of our country. But we will try to bring in more and more backward sections of the community under reservation for the overall development,” said Banerjee while addressing a programme here.

Chidambaram stuns Lok Sabha, speaks in Bhojpuri

Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who is known to be fluent in Tamil and English, stunned the Lok Sabha Thursday when he addressed the house in Bhojpuri, receiving praise from Speaker Meira Kumar, who comes from Bihar, for his effort.

Mladic trial adjourned; Judge postpones evidence

The presiding judge in the UN trial of Gen Ratko Mladic has delayed indefinitely the presentation of evidence that had been scheduled to start later this month due to “errors” by prosecutors in disclosing evidence to defence lawyers.

Alphons Orie said today he was delaying the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal case due to “significant disclosure errors” by prosecutors who are obliged to share all their evidence with Mladic’s defence team.

He says judges are still analysing the “scope and full impact” of the error.
