Ban ki-Moon urges Myanmar rebels to join peace process

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Myanmarese rebels to end violence and join a government-led peace process.

About 50,000 have been displaced in the violence in Kachin state since June 2011 after the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) ended a 16-year truce with the government.

The decades-old conflict has created a major humanitarian crisis, as people continue to flee from their homes to avoid the violence. The group is fighting for an independent homeland.

No compromise on law and order in UP, asserts Akhilesh

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Friday asked policemen to pull up their socks and warned them that his government wanted a peaceful state with a spruced-up law and order scenario.

Addressing senior police officials from all over the state at the Tilak Hall Secretariat, Yadav said his government will not compromise on law and order in the state.

Akhtar has been pushing for an amendment in the copyright laws to give music directors and lyricists a share of the profits earned on their work. The amendment to the copyright act was passed by the Rajya Sabha Thursday and will now go to the Lok Sabha.

US has plan to attack Iran over nuclear threat

The US has plans in place to attack Iran if necessary to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons, Washington’s envoy to Israel said, days ahead of a round of nuclear talks with Tehran.

Dan Shapiro told the Israel Bar Association the US hopes it will not have to resort to military force. “But that doesn’t mean that option is not fully available,” he said. “The necessary planning has been done to ensure that it’s ready.”

Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes, such as energy production. The US and Israel suspect Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons.

UN nuclear talks resume

The UN nuclear agency chief will visit Tehran tomorrow to sign a deal allowing his organisation to resume probing Iran’s disputed nuclear programme.

Diplomats said the visit by Yukiya Amano would allow both sides to agree an accord outlining access to sites, information and officials it seeks for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s investigation.

19-yr-old created fake Facebook profile of Mumbai top cop

Sleuths of the city’s cyber cell have arrested a 19-year-old student from Delhi for creating a fake Facebook profile of Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar.

Identified as Anubhav Bipinkumar Yadav, the accused hails from Dhanao in Uttar Pradesh. The police said Yadav was pursuing his Bachelor of Business Administration.

During the investigation, it was also learnt that Yadav had earlier created a community called ‘Save Girls-Safe Nation’, and another account calling himself ‘Madam’ to promote the initiative.

Father hacks two kids to death

A 40-year-old mentally-ill man on Friday hacked his two children to death and critically injured the other two before shooting himself in Bhimnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, around 275 km from here.

Police said the assailant had a “psychiatric record”.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Friday threatened to enforce discipline if the party’s top leaders of the party in Chhattisgarh did not come together immediately.

16 pilgrims killed as bus collides with truck

At least 16 persons were reported to have been killed on Friday night when a bus carrying pilgrims to Ajmer collided with a truck and burst into flames at Kotwali Dehat police station of the Bahraich district.

The bus collided head-on with the truck on Gonda-Bahraich road near Chilwaria village and caught fire at around 22:30 hours.

District Magistrate Kinjal said eight bodies have been recovered from inside the bus and 44 injured people were taken to nearby hospital.

Mecca Masjid Blast Anniversary passes off Peacefully

Amid tight security, the fifth anniversary of the bomb blast at the historic Mecca Masjid here passed without any untoward incident Friday.

The Friday prayers at the 17th century mosque near the landmafrk Charminar and in other mosques across the city passed off peacefully, officials said.

Police had made elaborate security arrangements around Mecca Masjid and at other places of worship in the communally-sensitive old city. Units of paramilitary Rapid Action Force, City Armed Reserve and Andhra Pradesh Special Police were deployed.

Shia groups clash in Lucknow

Two groups of the Shia community fought pitched battles outside Lucknow’s famous Bada Imambara, exchanged blows and set on fire a vehicle Friday.

The violence broke out after the weekly Friday prayers when a group of supporters of Waseem Rizvi, the president of the Shia Waqf Board, made some snide comments against Shia cleric and member of the All-India Mulsim Personal law Board Kalbe Jawwad.

This ignited sentiments and Jawwad’s supporters starting pelting stones and attacked Rizvi’s vehicle.

Photo ID card/ voter’s slip a must for voting in AP

The Election Commission (EC) would insist on voters compulsorily carrying their photo identity card or the voter’s slip henceforth in Andhra Pradesh.

The EC earlier used to allow several other cards like PAN Card as an identity card for the voters to cast their vote. However, now that practice has been stopped as the state has achieved 100 per cent photo identity card distribution, Election Commissioner H S Brahma told reporters in Hyderabad today.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called an all-party meeting on May 23 to discuss the issue of quota in promotions to government servants belonging to the reserved category with a view to evolve a consensus after the matter evoked a positive response in Parliament.

Sources said the all-party meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday morning to explore the possibilities of bringing a legislation to establish a quota in promotions to all government servants from the SC, ST and OBC categories.

A notorious rowdy-sheet of Old city, Nayeem alias Maruti Nayeem, was murdered on Thursday night. According to the information, Nayeem was chased and lynched by his opponents with boulders in the NRD Colony in Yakutpura last night.

Nayeem was principal accused in 13 murder cases. Besides, hundreds of cases were registered against him under Cyberabad and Hyderabad police commissionerates. As the deceased had lifted a large number of Maruti cars, he was nicknamed as Maruti Nayeem.
