British Muslims have widely welcomed the official approval to their plans to turn a former pub in west Norfolk into an Islamic community center, saying it will help Muslims extend bridges in the community.

“We are grateful to all the officers and authorities who recommended approval for this,” Assam Gabbair, chairman of the West Norfolk Islamic Association (WNIA), told the BBC on Monday, April 30.

WNIA introduced a request to convert Queen’s Arms, London Road, King’s Lynn, into a centre for prayer, education and events.

More showers likely in Andhra Pradesh

After heavy rains and lightning that struck various parts of the state, killing 16 people on Sunday, Met officials have predicted more showers over the next two days.

Weathermen said the prevailing weather conditions are unusual this time of the year.

Vitamin D protects against viral infections

You could protect yourself better against viral infections, especially during autumn and winter, with vitamin D supplementation, says a new study.

Since vitamin D levels decrease during the year’s last quarter when days are shorter and sunlight is relatively weak, this may explain why people are more prone to viral infection during these times.

The study also suggests that vitamin D supplementation, especially in older populations, could strengthen people’s innate immunity against viral infections, the Journal of Leukocyte Biology reports.

Unemployment to affect over 200 million people in 2012

The unemployment rate in 2012 will increase up to 202 million and it is on an upward trend for 2013, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported on Monday.

In its 2012 World of Work Report, the organization describes as alarming the trends in Europe, where unemployment rates have been increasing to almost two-thirds since 2010.

ILO notes that labor markets suffered in 2011 the effects of the world cos slowing down due to the economic crisis, considering unlikely that economy will grow at a sufficient pace in the next few years.

SC directs ND Tiwari to give blood sample‎

When pregnant women are exposed to moderate levels of a common pesticide, their children may experience lasting changes in brain structure linked to lower intelligence, a US study said today.

The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined New York City pregnant mothers who were tested for exposure to chlorpyrifos, or CPF, which is widely used for pest control in farms and public spaces.

A blood test that can identify women at high risk of breast cancer decades before the disease develops could be available in five years, say scientists.

Scientists at Imperial College London have identified a ‘genetic switch’, carried by one in five women, which doubles their risk of developing breast cancer.

Experts described the breakthrough discovery as “exciting” and said signs of the disease could be detected “many decades in advance”.

Dr James Flanagan, who led the new research, said the test could be available in five to ten years, the Telegraph reported.

Scientists from a pharmaceutical laboratory in Cuba have demonstrated a new and “highly-effective” medical product made from banana peel.

Jorge Luis Martinez and Yudit Rodriguez, executives from the Pharmaceutical Biological Laboratory — or Labiofam — presented the products to the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry at the Institute of Medicinal Materials in Vietnam capital Hanoi.

The medical products “stirred up interest and admiration among Vietnamese scientists and researchers”, the report said.

Dad lets friend rape daughter for free alcohol

The mother of the 14-year-old girl filed a complaint with the police, accusing the father of the ghastly deed. Medical tests proved that the girl was raped.

Teacher’s aide jailed for sending nude photos to 16 year-old students

A teacher’s aide has been jailed after sending nude photos of herself to three 16-year-old students. U.S. marshals arrested Tiffany Lynne Huffman on charges of sexual misbehaviour.

The 28-year-old woman from Oklahoma is alleged to have struck a friendship with the three teenagers through messages on Facebook, the Daily Mail reported.

Police said she began having sexual conversations with each victim and eventually sent them nude photos of herself.

She also sent photos of herself in sheer lingerie via text message from her cell phone.
