Three months after he completed a full five-year term, A.P. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan has been given a five-year-long extension by the President of India on Saturday.

A second innings was expected for Mr. Narasimhan, currently the senior-most Governor in the country. He assumed office as full-fledged Governor on January 22, 2010, a time when the State was passing through a turbulent period caused by the agitation for a separate Telangana.

NHRC mulling ‘code of ethics’ for corporate

Controversies over land acquisition and labour unrest involving big businesses have prompted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to come up with a “code of ethics” for corporates.

A draft report in this respect has been submitted to the NHRC by New Delhi-based Institute of Corporate Sustainability Management (ICSM) Trust and has been perused by the Commission.

NHRC had commissioned a study — ‘Developing Code of Ethics for Indian Industries’ — with the objective of bringing into effect a similar a code of ethics for corporates by drawing from international norms.

President embarks on visit to Seychelles, S Africa

President Pratibha Patil on Sunday left on an official tour to Seychelles and South Africa, a visit expected to further boost India’s friendly ties with the two African countries.

The President was given a warm send off by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Secretary RK Singh, Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma, representatives from South Africa and Seychelles Embassies and others.

Roadside bomb kills 10 policemen in Afghanistan

Provincial police chief General Abdul Qayuum Baqizoi told Press TV on Saturday that the blast took place in the restive Chak district of the province, situated about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of the Afghan capital Kabul, on Friday afternoon.

The bomb went off when a line of vehicles passed by the area after an inauguration ceremony of a development project.

“Only one vehicle was blown up causing the casualties but other officials from the district escaped unhurt,” Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the provincial government, said.

Bomb injures 2 US troops in southwest Afghanistan

Two US soldiers serving with the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), an Afghan policeman, and two civilians have sustained injuries in a bomb attack in southwestern Afghanistan.

Local security sources told Press TV that a bomber set off his explosives on Saturday evening, close to US-led troops and Afghan forces patrolling an area in the Zaranj district of Nimruz province, which is situated about 800 kilometers (496 miles) southwest of the Afghan capital Kabul.

Fake currency worth Rs. 45 lakh seized at Hyderabad airport

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized fake currency with face value of Rs. 45.57 lakh at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Friday.

The officials did not disclose the identity of the accused, but said he belonged to Andhra Pradesh, and had arrived by an Emirates flight from Dubai.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials stopped the man, and a search of his baggage led to the discovery of high quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of the face value of Rs. 45.57 lakh, in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 and 500.

Wife Kills Husband With Frying Pan‎

A Russian man died after his jealous wife hit him on the head with a frying pan, officials said.

The incident took place in Orenburg city in the Urals region in western Russia.

“The 50-year old man was hospitalised in intensive care with acute cerebral circulatory problems and died the following day,” police said.

The 36-year old woman said she was driven by jealousy and hit her husband with a frying pan during a quarrel, they said.

The woman faces up to 15 years in prison.

A 21-year-old Pakistani woman, who was pregnant, was allegedly smothered to death by her husband and his parents, who later claimed she may have been killed by an evil spirit, a British court has heard.

Nalia Mumtaz was born in Pakistan and entered into an arranged marriage with her husband- then a student at Wolverhampton University- in August 2007. She came to Britain for the first time in May 2008 and moved into his parents’ three-bedroom home in Birmingham, media reported.

Yoga guru Ramdev on Saturday refused to rule out Hindutva leaders like Sadhvi Ritambara sharing dais during his joint fast with Anna Hazare in June in New Delhi, a demand reportedly put forward by Team Anna.

Seven-day-old baby girl left abandoned in hospital in Haryana

A seven- day-old baby girl was abandoned by her parents at the Rohtak PGI Hospital in Haryana on Friday. According to eye witnesses, the baby was brought to the hospital by her parents three days ago but on Friday they seemed to have disappeared leaving her behind.

Hospital records show the little girl was born premature baby and had been diagnosed with jaundice which is why she was brought to the hospital.

For now, the condition of the baby is said to be stable and the hospital authorities have lodged a complaint with the police and who have already started looking for the couple.

2 schoolgirls killed for resisting molestation bid

Two schoolgirls who resisted a molestation attempt were deliberately hit and run over by a jeep leading to their deaths in Bihar’s Nawada district on Saturday, police said.

The Class X students boarded a jeep after collecting money from their school at Sitaram village under Mufassil police station, the sources said.

The money were given to them under the Chief Minister’s Uniform Scheme for purchasing uniform and educational material.

People in the jeep, which ferries passengers in rural areas, tried to molest the two girls at which they alighted and tried to run away, they said.

Major fire broke in oil mill

A major fire broke out on Saturday night in an oil mill in Ashapur area of the district, triggering panic among locals, fire department officials said.

“The massive fire broke out at Jhunjhunwala oil mill, setting off blasts in five oil tankers,” Fire Officer Subhash Singh said, adding no casualty has been reported so far. Over a dozen fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the raging inferno, which could not be put out till midnight, and more fire brigades have been called from adjoining districts.

Pak students to protest Rushdie books’ inclusion

The proposed inclusion of two famous works of India-born Booker Prize winner author Salman Rushdie in the additional courses for M. Phil and PhD at the University of Peshawar has raised the ire of students and teachers.

The students are planning protests at the university campus and elsewhere in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province over the inclusion of two of the Rushdie’s works ‘Midnight’s Children’ and ‘Shame’ by the department of English and Applied Linguistics.

Four killed in road accident

Four persons, including a mother-son duo, were killed and five others injured in a road accident here in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday morning, police said.

A Tavera vehicle ferrying members of a family and their relatives to Tirumala crashed into a stationary truck at Pullampeta near here in the early hours of Saturday.

Four of them died on the spot while five others were injured, Circle Inspector Venkateswarlu said. The injured were admitted to Government Hospital at Rajampeta.

Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and his family retained their top spot as Britain’s richest for the seventh year in succession while the combined worth of the country’s 1000 wealthiest individuals defied double-dip recession to reach record levels during the last year.

Mittal, 61, and his family’s worth came down by 4,814 million pounds, but they were still the richest in Britain with a net worth of 12.7 billion pounds, according to the Sunday Times Rich List, which annually releases the worth of Britain’s wealthiest individuals.

Narasimhan, Sankaranarayanan reappointed Andhra, Maharashtra governors

President Pratibha Patil Saturday re-appointed E.S.L. Narasimhan and K. Sankaranarayanan as governors of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively.According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, Narasimhan and Sankaranarayanan have been appointed governors for fresh term.

Meanwhile, B.V. Wanchoo, a former chief of the Special Protection Group (SPG), will be the new governor of Goa. The post was vacant.

NATO soldier dies in Afghanistan

A soldier with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) died Saturday in Afghanistan, a statement said.

“An International Security Assistance Force service member died as a result of a non-battle related injury in southern Afghanistan today (Saturday),” reported Xinhua citing the ISAF statement.

Troops mainly from the US, Britain and Australia have been stationed in southern Afghanistan under the framework of ISAF to curb Taliban-linked insurgency.

This year, a total of 133 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far.

Though Kalki has done split-second kissing scenes in the films ‘Shaitan’ and ‘Dev D’, nobody had seen her smooching for a long time on screen.

When Shanghai’s director Dibakar Banerjee first told Kalki that he wanted to shoot an intense smooching scene between her and Prosenjit Chatterjee for Shanghai, it was imperative that the duo understood the background story of their on-screen characters at Atul Mongia’s workshop before filming it.
