Instead of going for a pompous ceremony, an IAS officer from Gujarat opted for a simple platform for his marriage and was one of the 35 men who tied the knot at a mass wedding ceremony in Bhiloda taluka today.

Vijay Kharadi, who cleared his IAS exams in 2009 and presently posted as deputy collector in Narmada district, married Seema Garasia at a simple function organised by his tribal Dungri Garasia community.

Mumbai terror attack: SC reserves order on Kasab’s plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab’s plea challenging his conviction and death sentence in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

A bench of justice Aftab Alam and justice CK Prasad reserved its verdict after a marathon hearing, spanning over two and a half month, of arguments by the prosecution and defence counsel in the terror mayhem, which involved random firing by Kasab and other mercenaries, killing 166 people.

India develops new synthetic anti-malaria drug

On the occasion of World Malaria Day on Wednesday, India has a good news for the world. The country has developed an indigenous new malaria drug which in turn will boost India’s pharmaceutical research.

The most remarkable feature of this new powerful drug is that it is derived chemically in the lab and is a substitute to the global drug Artemisinin which is mainly a plant based product.

Shaheen-1A successfully test-fired by Pakistan

The Pakistani military says it has successfully test-launched an upgraded intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

The military said in a statement on Wednesday that the missile was an improved version of the Shaheen 1 with a longer range. The Shaheen 1 is believed to have a range of 750 kilometers (465 miles).

The military did not provide the exact range of the new Shaheen 1A.

Botox ingredient has limited effect on headaches

The main ingredient in Botox may be modestly helpful for people with chronic migraines, a new report suggests — but it doesn`t seem to offer much relief for those who have less-frequent headaches.

Patients who started out having headaches almost every day reported two fewer headaches per month when they were given injections of botulinum toxin A. But they also had more side effects, including weak muscles and stiff necks.

Smoking and not nicotine `cuts rare tumour risk`

Researchers have confirmed a link between smoking and a reduced risk for a rare benign tumour near the brain, but the addition of smokeless tobacco to the analysis indicates that nicotine is not the protective substance.

The study using Swedish data suggested that men who currently smoke are almost 60 percent less likely than people who have never smoked to develop this tumour, called an acoustic neuroma.

But men in the study who used snuff, which produces roughly the same amount of nicotine in the blood as smoking, had no reduced risk of tumour development.

Genes that increase risk of osteoporosis and fractures discovered

Researchers have identified the genetic variations that are believed to cause osteoporosis.

They found that women with a higher proportion of genetic variations associated with osteoporosis have a more than 50 percent increased fracture risk.

Osteoporosis is a common and a devastating age-related disease. About 50 percent of all who have a hip fracture after age 80 die within one year from the time of injury.

The consequences of osteoporosis are therefore well-known, but the causes of the disease are largely unknown.

‘Deep throat’ revealed

The Swede who led the probe into the Bofors scam believes that the late Rajiv Gandhi may not have received any money in the deal but he took no action against the cover- up in the probe.

“ There was no evidence that he ( Rajiv) had received any bribe. But he watched the massive cover- up in India and Sweden and did nothing.

Many Indian institutions were tarred, innocent people were punished while the guilty got away,” Sten Lindstrom, the former head of the Swedish police who led the probe into allegations of corruption in the Bofors deal, said.

Germany offers to take away toxic Bhopal waste

THE tonnes of toxic waste lying at the closed Union Carbide plant in Bhopal has finally got a taker. In a surprise development, a German government agency has offered to airlift the waste from Bhopal to Germany for treatment and safe disposal.

This could bring to an end years of wrangling over treatment of waste.

Theft in sub-inspector’s house

(Siasat News): In a bizarre incident, an incident of theft took place in the house of a sub-inspector who is associated with Malakpet police station.

ccording to the details, sub-inspector Yadgiri, a resident of Vani Nagar, Saeedabad, had gone to his duty as usual whereas his family members had gone to meet some of their relatives. Hence the house was locked.

This situation gave the thieves a golden chance and they broke open the lock of the house and gained entry.

Rythu Bazar located at Falakhuma gets more than 90% Urdu knowing customers but the rates board was written only in Telugu. It was difficult for Urdu speakers to know the current rates of vegetables and other articles. It was not known whether the traders are charging more than the notified rates.

Siasat had invited the attention of the Rythu Bazar authorities and had impressed upon them to write these rates in Urdu also. As a result of the representation of Siasat, Urdu has been superscribed on the rates boards along with Telugu.

Newborn infant thrown down garbage chute; mother arrested

Sharjah police found a new-born baby abandoned in a garbage skip of a residential tower.

The police arrested the mother who had tried to get rid of the baby after delivery on the ninth floor of the apartment building. It was found that the mother is a Filipina maid working for a family of nationals consisting of a husband, wife and a five-year-old child.

The maid had fled her original sponsor and was working for the new family illegally.

‘Riots and their remedy’

A consultation meet on the topic of ‘Riots and their remedy’ will be held on April 25, at International Ghareeb Nawaz Hall, Saaz-e-Deccan office, Deewan Devdi at 11 am. Mr. Baqer Husain will preside over the meeting.

The meeting being held by free press editors’ federation, Sharai Panchayat, Anjuman Baqa-e-Urdu and other organizations will prepare a memorandum for the future strategy and solution will be given for permanent peace.

Police officials have also been invited to the meeting. Mr. Khaleel Quadri, Mr. Tahir Romani, Mr. Hadi Raheel, and others will give proposals.

A US lawmaker has asked the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, to reconsider the government’s decision against issuing a diplomatic visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, drawing strong reactions from the Indian American Muslim community in Washington.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who was associated with a political party for a short period, feels that actors do not fit into the world of politics “as they are innocent people”.

Sanjay had entered politics as a Samajwadi Party candidate for the Lucknow Parliamentary constituency. The Samajwadi Party later appointed the Bollywood actor as its general secretary. The Union government has gone against experts to adamantly introduce a controversial vaccine that has reportedly killed four children in Kerala during a pilot project.

Touted as “ one- shot wonder” and soon to be introduced in the universal immunisation programme in six states, the pentavalent vaccine targets five infections — diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus hepatitis- B and HiB ( haemophilius influenzae type B).

The last one is responsible for pneumonia and meningitis in children in some countries.

4 Year old Saudi boy shoots his father dead over Playstation

An angry four-year-old boy shot his father dead after he refused to buy him a Playstation.

The Saudi Arabian youngster, from the southern Jizan area, grabbed his father’s pistol and gunned him down, the Asharq daily reported.

The child had reportedly asked his father to buy him a PlayStation and the shooting took place after the man returned home without the desired object.

As he was undressing, the man put the weapon down, which the child then grabbed and fired at him from close range.

Sania Mirza turns down offer from Aisam

Sania Mirza has turned down an offer to partner Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in the international circuit despite the Pakistani expressing interest to play alongside the Indian tennis star several times in the past. Sania is currently partnering India’s Mahesh Bhupathi, who is ranked 15th in the doubles, a place behind Aisam in the mixed doubles competitions on the international circuit.
