City centre residents 80 pc likelier to develop coronary artery calcification

People who live in city centres are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery calcification (CAC), which can lead to heart disease, than those living in less polluted urban and rural areas, a new study has found.

Researchers spoke to 1,225 men and women aged 50 and 60 years of age, including 251who lived in the centres of major Danish cities.

Despite the fact that none of the participants showed any symptoms of heart disease, 43 percent of the total had CAC.

A leading study has warned that millions of people who take dietary supplements to boost their health may be doing themselves more harm than good.

Scientists have claimed taking pills and capsules, like folic acid, vitamin D and calcium, do not reduce the risk of cancer.

Z H Javeed pledges to protect Waqf properties

Andhra Pradesh Waqf board member Mr. Zakir Husain Javeed resolved to honestly serve for the protection of Waqf properties. The government has appointed the only Muslim member of Andhra Pradesh Bar Council, Mr. Zakir Husain Javeed as the Waqf board member with immediate effect by issuing GO MS no 47 on April 25.

Scholar drops study on Rushdie after Muslim uproar

Prabha Parmar’s topic for a post-doctoral fellowship was ‘The use of magic realism in the major novels of Salman Rushdie, Amitabh Ghosh and Vikram Seth’. The fellowship, awarded by the UGC, had created a hue and cry among Muslims.

Prison for sex with a minor

SEXUAL offences against children will now invite stricter punishment. On Thursday, the Union cabinet approved a legislation that makes sex with a person below 18 years illegal.

The sexual offences against children Bill will be placed in Parliament for its passage into law. It calls for tougher punishment for crimes against children, which could invite jail from three years to life imprisonment.

The most controversial clause of the legislation is doing away with the age of consent for sexual intercourse, which was 16- 18 years.

Angry over insult to wife, man sets 7 on fire

Furious over alleged insult to his wife, a man on Thursday set ablaze five children and two women in Devtola area near Balaghat, police said.

Rameshwar Soni, the culprit, reportedly got angry when his wife was asked to get down from a jeep which was carrying a newly-wed couple.

Soni is related to the groom’s family and it was his nephew who was getting married.

After returning to Devtola, a furious Soni poured inflammable material on the kids and two women and set them on fire.

Bradford converted to Islam

Suicide a grave sin: Grand Mufti

Sheikh Abdul Aziz Aal Al-Sheikh, Grand Mufti and Chairman of the Board of Senior Ulama and the Administration for Religious Research and Ruling (Ifta), has said that those who commit suicide commit a grave sin.
He said Qur’anic verses and sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) have warned against committing suicide, which is forbidden (haraam) according to Shariah.

The Grand Mufti warned against using suicide as a means to exert pressure or highlight some demands. He also warned against being lax in using expressions like ‘the star’ or ‘martyr.’

Minorities scholarships increased

(Siasat News)Govt. of India has decided to enhance the number of Central Govt. scholarships to minority students of pre-matric and post matric courses during the academic year 2012-2013. For A.P. State 3,25,159 pre-matric and 41,188 post matric scholarships have been allotted. In the same way, in merit-cum-means category, in addition to 2,601 candidates, other candidates will also get scholarships. This year (i.e., 2011-12) the target for A.P. State pre-Matric scholarship was 1,91,973 and for post matric it was 20,550. In merit-cum-means category, last year the target was 1100.

Regressive bill on legal age for sex gets Cabinet nod

The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared a Bill that seeks to raise the age of legal sex from 16 to 18, provoking sharp criticism from child rights activists, who called it a regressive step.

The Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Bill, 2011, says sex under the age of 18 – even if consensual – would be deemed as statutory rape and an offence that would be tried under the Juvenile Justice Act carrying a maximum punishment of three years imprisonment.

Thackeray refuses to meet Anna

SOCIAL activist Anna Hazare, who has been meeting leaders of various political parties in Mumbai to campaign for implementing a strong Lokayukta in the state, was snubbed by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Maoists up demand for releasing Menon, want 17 rebels freed

US stocks rally on housing data

US stocks extended rally Thursday as the housing data came in better than expected, offsetting a weak jobs report and some disappointing earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 113.90 points, or 0.87 percent, to 13,204.62. The Standard & Poor’s 500 was up 9.29 points, or 0.67 percent, to 1,399.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 20.98 points, or 0.69 percent, to 3,050.61, Xinhua reported.
