Google seconds project to link former terrorists in efforts of ‘counter-radicalisation’

Washington – Search engine giant Google has backed a new network, which would link up former terrorists and former violent radicals online, in an attempt to extirpate and combat extremism worldwide.

The new network, ‘Against Violent Extremism’s is touted to collaborate over a thousand reformed Islamic, far-right, far-left and other extremists on counter-radicalisation, the Telegraph reports.

Victims of terrorism will also be participating in the project, including Jo Berry, the daughter of the Conservative MP Anthony Berry, who was killed in the IRA Brighton bombing in 1984.

Now, camera that describes pictures

A student in the US has invented a camera, which produces written descriptions of scenes rather than photographs.

The device uploads pictures to the web, which are described within minutes by users on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk service.

The short description is then sent back to the camera and printed.

It was developed by Matt Richardson, an Interactive Communications graduate student at New York University.

Gilani dares Oppn, says only Speaker can disqualify him

A day after his conviction for contempt by Pakistan’s Supreme Court, a defiant Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today dared the opposition to move a vote of no-confidence against him and said only the Speaker could disqualify him.

“There is a custom that nobody but the Speaker can disqualify me. It cannot happen, there is no law or anything in the Constitution. Today if you (the Speaker) denotify me, I will leave right away. That is up to the custodian of the House,” Gilani said in the National Assembly or lower house of Parliament.

US House OKs cybersecurity bill despite veto threat

The US House of Representatives passed a cybersecurity bill on Thursday that would allow the government and companies to share information about hacking, but which has raised privacy concerns and a veto threat from the White House.

The House approved the bill 248-168, prompting the top Republican and Democrat on the intelligence committee who sponsored it to issue a joint statement lauding the bipartisan approval.

Space shuttle Enterprise to arrive in NY today

Any new arrival to New York City wants to see the sights — and the space shuttle Enterprise is no different.

Enterprise is scheduled to arrive in the city Friday, riding on top of a modified jumbo jet. Its trip was to include low-altitude flyovers over parts of the city and landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Manhattan’s west side.

The shuttle had been scheduled to arrive earlier in the week but NASA pushed it back because of bad weather.

Rare Philippine turtles returned by Hong Kong

Turtles represent longevity and good luck, and that’s certainly true for 18 rare smuggled turtles that were returned from Hong Kong to their native Philippines.

Philippine Wildlife Bureau head Mundita Lim says the pond turtles were confiscated at the Hong Kong airport in February from a Chinese student, along with 13 more common box turtles.

Pond turtles live only in forests on Palawan Island southwest of Manila. Only about 120 remain in the wild. Lim says they are prized as novelty pets or food.

New Delhi, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karthi Chidambaram has said that he is likely to consider suingJanata Party chief Subramanian Swamy over allegations that he and his firm Advantage earned Rs.26 lakhs from a deal with Aircel in 2006.

According to reports, Karthi Chidambaram’s chartered accountant K.Balachandran has sent a legal notice to Swamy.
Swamy has alleged that Advantage made Rs 26 lakh out of a deal with telecom company Aircel, before its takeover by Maxis. Swamy alleged that the transaction occurred when Chidambaram was the country’s Finance Minister.

Bin Laden’s family deported from Pakistan to Saudi

ISLAMABAD – The family of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, killed almost a year ago by American Special Forces in a military town in northwest Pakistan, left Pakistan for Saudi Arabia early on Friday morning, the family lawyer told Reuters.

The move ends months of speculation about the fate of the three widows and 11 children, who were detained by Pakistani security forces after the May 2 raid.

“Yes, they’re being deported to Saudi Arabia,” said Aamir Khalil, the family lawyer. “It is a special flight.”

Translated Bibles to Muslims Irk Christians

Translated copies of the Bible intended to the Muslim world have sparked Christian outcry over claims that the copies miss the essential pillars of Christianity, the Mercury News reported Thursday, April 26.

Russia Muslims Reject Shari`ah Courts

A call by a Chechen lawyer for creating Shari`ah courts in Russia is inviting a strong opposition from Muslim religious leaders in the European country.

“According to the Constitution, religion is separated from the state in Russia,” Talgat Tajuddin, the head of the Central Spiritual Muslim Board, told Interfax news agency.

“Our country has its own judicial system and Muslims use it as equal citizens of Russia.”

Chechen lawyer Dagir Hasavov has earlier called for creating Shari`ah courts in Russia.

Mohammed Pahelwan to file appeal against bail cancellation

Mohammed Pahelwan and two other accused in the Akbaruddin Owaisi attack case whose bail was cancelled by the high court on Wednesday have decided to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court.

According to the family sources, Mohamed Bin Omer Yafai alias Mohammed Pahelwan and the other accused did not receive the high court orders on Thursday.

The sources said once the orders are received the counsels for the accused Altaf Ahmad and KV Vishwanathan would be filing the special leave petition (SLP) before the apex court challenging the high court order.

Ex-BJP chief Bangaru Laxman convicted for corruption act

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Bangaru Laxman has been convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act in the 2001 Tehelka sting case. A Delhi court convicted Bangaru on Thursday and announced that the sentencing would take place on Saturday. The court of special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge Kanwaljeet Arora sent Bangaru into judicial custody soon after convicting him.

BSF jawan commits suicide

A BSF jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the Dera Baba Nanak sector here, BSF sources said on Tuesday.

According to the sources, Vishwajit, a resident of Pakhria Uha in West Bengal was posted in 38 BSF battalion and deployed at Sadhawali border post on the Indo-Pak border when he shot himself with his service rifle and died on the spot.

The cause of the suicide was not immediately known as investigations were on, the sources said adding that senior BSF officials had rushed to the spot.

India-Pak Home Secy talks likely in May

Amid renewed engagements between India and Pakistan, the Home Secretaries of the two countries are likely to have a bilateral meeting in Islamabad in the last week of May.

New Delhi has conveyed to Islamabad that Home Secretary R K Singh was ready to travel to the neighbouring country for the dialogue anytime after May 22 when the Budget session of Parliament comes to an end.

“Now, Pakistan has given us a date for the talks in the last week of May. We are considering it and will convey our decision to them soon,” a senior Home Ministry official said.

N D Tiwari can be compelled to undergo DNA test: HC

The Delhi High Court on Friday said that veteran Congress leader N.D. Tiwari can be compelled to give blood sample for DNA test in the paternity suit filed by a youth claiming to be his biological son.

Setting aside a single judge bench’s September 2011 order that 86-year-old Mr. Tiwari cannot be compelled to give his blood sample, a bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said that police force can also be used if he continues to defy orders to undergo DNA test.
