India to become third largest aviation market’

India is likely to become the third largest aviation market in the world from its current position as traffic volumes grow exponentially, a top official said Tuesday.

“The growth of civil aviation is likely to push India from ninth to third position in the world in terms of volume of traffic, necessitating a very strong security system,” said Gurjot Singh Malhi, commissioner of security (Civil Aviation), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

Goa cancels 450 iron ore trading licenses

The Goa government Tuesday cancelled the licenses of nearly 450 iron ore traders registered here in a bid to check extraction and export of iron ore.

The order suspending the licenses was issued late Tuesday by the mines ministry which is headed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

“All of them have also been issued showcause notices which asked them why action should not be taken (against them),” newly appointed mines department director Prasanna Acharya said.

Man gets death for burning alive daughter-in-law

A man was awarded the death penalty by a court here Tuesday for burning alive his daughter-in-law in 2009. His son and daughter were awarded similar sentences.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Ramesh Kumar awarded death sentence to Gulbeg Ali, a resident of Gokulpuri in east Delhi, his son Zulfikar Ali and daughter Kumari Mubin Fatima for setting ablaze victim Shama Parveen in October 2009 in their house.

Parveen was married to Gulbeg Ali’s other son Sarfraz.

The court also fined the convicts Rs.5,000 each.

Pakistan arrests 23 Indian fishermen

Pakistani authorities have arrested 23 Indian fishermen and seized four boats for violating the country’s maritime boundary, officials said Tuesday.

The fishermen were detained by the Maritime Security Agency (MSA) during a routine patrol, a spokesman for the agency said.

He said the Indian fishermen and their boats were apprehended for entering deep inside Pakistani waters.

The spokesman said the fishermen had been warned by the Pakistani maritime authority, but they “ignored” the warning.

Israeli diplomat attack: Court denies bail to Kazmi

Journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmad Kazmi, arrested for his alleged role in the February 13 bomb attack at an Israeli diplomat’s car here, was today denied bail by a Delhi court.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Vinod Yadav dismissed Kazmi’s bail plea saying there was no substance in his bail plea.

“I have gone through the case diaries brought to the court by the special team of Delhi police… I have not found any substance in the defence arguments,” the CMM said.

12 Andhra students hospitalized after corporal punishment

In another shocking incident of corporal punishment, a woman teacher in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district severely punished 12 girl students who had to be hospitalized.

The incident took place Tuesday at Gudur town in Nellore district, about 400 km from here.

According to police, the teacher at a government-run school lost her cool when the class 7 students did not recite an English poem. She asked them to do 150 sit-ups. As many as 12 students collapsed after doing some sit-ups and had to be rushed to a local hospital.

Banerjee announces sops for Muslims, honorarium for Imams

Raising the pitch for next year’s panchayat elections in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday announced pro-minority sops including a monthly honorarium for Imams.

“The government wants to give a monthly honorarium of Rs. 2,500 to Imams of the state which will be paid through the state Wakf Board.

“For the purpose a special task force comprising government officials and Imams from the city and districts will be constituted which will make the necessary recommendations for the implementation of the scheme,” Banerjee said here during a meet with the religious leaders.

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has said that he does not give importance to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, started by cousin Raj Thackeray, and neither do the people.

The High Court on Tuesday rejected the petition of Lanco Hills that the land it purchased for the construction of Lanco Hills Technology Park does not belong to the Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board.

Disposing a petition, the court observed that the 1,654.32 acres of land allotted to Lanco Hills for the construction of park belonged to Wakf Board. The court advised the Lanco Hills to settle the ownership dispute at the Wakf Board Tribunal only. The Advocate Shafeeq Rehman Mahajir has been pursuing the matter on behalf of the A.P.State Wakf Board.

Three arrested for stealing cash from ATM

Three persons have been arrested for stealing Rs 23 lakh from an automated teller machine (ATM) of a public sector bank in Geeta Colony in East Delhi a fortnight ago, police said today. Yunus Hasan, 21, Mohammed Abbas, 19 and Mohammed Zahid,20, all presently residing in Laxmi Nagar, had vandalised the ATM of Punjab National Bank on the intervening night of March 14-15 and stole Rs 23,03,200 from the cash chest after cutting it open with a gas cutter, a senior poilce official said.
