Captain Darren Sammy posted his highest Test score in vain as the West Indies plunged to a 75-run defeat in the third and final Test against Australia here.

Resuming the final day on 173 for five and needing a virtual miracle to reach their target of 370, the West Indies lost their last five wickets for 121 runs to be dismissed on the stroke of lunch for 294 Saturday.

It was enough time for Sammy to plunder a typically stroke-filled 61, an innings that entertained a large Windsor Park crowd despite the disappointment of defeat.

India’s forex reserves rise by $1.46 billion

India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves rose by $1.46 billion to $294.60 billion for the week ended April 20, official data showed. Forex reserves had risen by $213.8 million to $293.14 billion in the previous week.

Foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex reserves kitty, rose by $1.45 billion to $260.21 billion during the week under review, according to the weekly statistical supplement of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country’s central bank.

The RBI did not provide any reasons for the upward change in foreign currency assets.

Rahul Gandhi visits drought-hit Maharashtra district

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi arrived in Satara town Saturday morning for a visit to nearby drought-hit areas of Maharashtra, an official said.

Accompanied by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and other senior ministers, Gandhi arrived from Mumbai in a helicopter. Satara is around 250 km south-east of the country’s commercial capital.

Immediately after landing, Gandhi proceeded to the Zalshi Talao, which is one of the major water sources in the district.

Iraq farmer marries 2 women in 1 night

Abdul Rahman Nayef al-Obeidi, a 22-year-old Iraqi farmer, fell in love with two women, but instead of choosing between them, he married both in one night in a small village in central Iraq.

The wedding ceremony for Obeidi and two of his cousins, Intidhar (17) and Suad (22) was held on April 6 at his family home in Al-Laqlaq village, north of Tikrit.

The ceremony was attended by the families of his two brides, relatives and friends, who were happy and surprised.

Gilani still Pak PM, will continue to work with him: US

The US has said it continues to work with Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as it believes that he remains leader of the democratic government there.

“There was a court decision. He was given a 30-second sentence, I believe, and he remains the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference.

“And as such, we continue to work with him, and (Special US Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan) Ambassador (Marc) Grossman did meet with him in Pakistan,” Nuland said in response to a question.

Mirwaiz Umer condemns efforts to trigger sectarian strife

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group, Friday said his group would oppose and expose religious institutions being supported by the government to create sectarian strife among the Muslims in Kashmir.

Condemning the alleged machinations to trigger sectarian conflict, Mirwaiz Umer told a Friday prayer congregation here: “We will oppose all efforts aimed at fanning division of the Kashmiri Muslims on sectarian lines. If need be, we will expose the elements and institutions patronised by the government for this purpose”.

109 acquitted in 2002 Umta riots case

A local court here on Friday acquitted 109 persons who were accused of killing two people in Umta village of this taluka in Mahasana district during the post Godhra riots of 2002.

Additional Sessions Judge KB Meghanani released all the accused giving them benefit of doubt in the case.

The court said that the prosecution was not able to clearly establish the role of the accused.

On February 28, 2002, a violent mob of over 1,500 people had burnt down many homes and business establishment of minority community members at Umta.

Kashmir religious leaders deny sectarian tension

Amid talk of tension between Kashmir Valley’s predominant Barelvi Muslims and the fast spreading Ahle Hadith school of thought, their leaders have dismissed it as “false propaganda” and say Kashmiris can ill afford sectarian strife after two decades of bloodbath.

There have been news reports that some central agencies are propping up the Barelvis to oppose the influence of the Jamiat Ahle Hadith, which is generally perceived as less tolerant of the Sufi ethos of the majority of Kashmiri Muslims.

India’s missile defence system ready

VK Saraswat, the chief of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), has disclosed that the country’s missile defence system is ready for induction.

As per a report in The Indian Express, while speaking on a TV show Saraswat said that as part of the system a two-layer shield – the AAD (advanced air defence) and the PAD – will be put in place over Delhi.

The system has already undergone four tests as part of which incoming missiles were intercepted and destroyed.

“Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told two messengers of Musailimah, a bitter enemy of the Prophet (pbuh), that he would not kill them because he is not killer of messengers,” Bin Humaid said while delivering the Friday congregational sermon at the Grand Mosque.

CIA alerts Pak about Al Qaeda plan ‎
