Shutdown in Telangana over suicides for separate state

A daylong shutdown began across Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region Tuesday following a call by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to protest the central government’s insensitivity towards the demand for a separate state, which is driving youth to commit suicide.

Shops and business establishments remained closed in most parts of Telangana, which comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad.

State-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) buses were plying as usual as the TRS has exempted the bus transport service from the shutdown in view of the ongoing Class 10 examination.

Moderate earthquake shakes eastern Turkey

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 shook eastern Turkey on Monday, demolishing barns and causing some damage to mud-brick homes at a village in its epicenter, officials said.

The quake struck the village of Sultani, in the eastern province of Mus at 1:35 p.m. (11:35 GMT), said Turkey’s Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory seismology center.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory says the epicentre was near the town of Sultanli in the eastern province of Mus. The quake struck at 11:35 GMT today.

Anna Hazare losing relevance: Bal Thackeray

Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray Tuesday questioned the relevance of the anti-corruption crusade by veteran activist Anna Hazare and his team members.

In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said that for the first time since Hazare’s “flop show” in Mumbai in December last year, Team Anna had again featured in the news.

A senior Iranian cleric says the Israeli threats of a military strike on Iran are mere “psychological warfare” as Tel Aviv fully understands any such venture would lead to its “total annihilation”.

SC to hear Rajiv Gandhi assassins’ plea

The Supreme Court on Tuesday will hear a plea by the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The convicts are reportedly seeking that the case be tried in the apex court.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court will also hear another petition by them seeking the setting aside of the President’s order that rejected their mercy pleas.

The convicts are pleading that the Madras High Court commute their life sentence to life imprisonment.

Japan shuts down another nuclear power station

Following last year’s disaster at the Fukushima plant, Japan shuts down another nuclear power station, raising the possibility of power shortages in the country.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company announced that the number 6 reactor at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa plant in Niigata Prefecture was shut down early Monday.

The incident leaves only one of Japan’s 54 nuclear reactors in operation, which is also due to be switched off in May.

The reactors have been turned off for routine maintenance but local communities have refused to allow them to be restarted because of safety fears.

Authored by Maulavi Ashraf Ali Thanvi, who is understood to be a prominent Islamic scholar, the 160-page book claims to be a “presentation for newlyweds” or couples who have been together for some years.

Telangana region bandh today

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has called for a bandh in the Telangana region on Tuesday to protest the government’s apparent indifference towards the separate statehood issue. A ruckus broke out in Delhi and Hyderabad over the issue on Monday. MPs from the region shouted slogans in Parliament after two students demanding separate statehood for Telangana set fire to themselves.

One of the two students died in the self-immolation bid.

Facebook helps cop nab thieves

The social networking site has helped the police crack a theft case wherein two students were arrested after they allegedly picked a motor-bike from a mall a few days ago.

The police have arrested Ayush Rai, a resident of Anuppur and Abhishek Tiwari, a resident of Shahdol, after tracking them with the help of the Facebook. Tukoganj police station inspector Ashok Tiwari said a motorbike of Nikhilesh Khandelwal was stolen from the Treasure Island parking on March 14. The CCTV camera installed in the parking captured the image of thieves, he said.

No refund for cancelled licences: TRAI

Telecom regulator TRAI Monday said companies exiting the sector need not to be refunded their entry fee and a separate policy to help them move out is not necessary.

“There is no need for a separate exit policy and that the entry fee paid will continue to be non-refundable,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in its draft response to ‘Exit Policy for Various Telecom Licenses’.

The exit policy was to be created for categories like the 122 UAS license given on or after January 10, 2008, licences given prior to January 10, 2008 and all other licence and future licences.

The best guarantee for nuclear safety is a world free of nuclear weapons, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday, calling for a multilateral framework for achieving this. He also announced a contribution of $1 million to the IAEA’s Nuclear Security Fund for 2012-13.

“The best guarantee for nuclear security is a world free from nuclear weapons,” Manmohan Singh said while addressing the plenary of the Nuclear Security Summit here.

Bihar probationary officers undertake Heritage Walk in Bhopal

Sixteen probationary officers of the Bihar State Administrative Services, who are in Bhopal on a training schedule, participated in a Heritage Walk in the walled city on Sunday.

Court to hear Zakia Jafri’s new plea today

An Ahmedabad court is set to hear Zakia Jafri’s new plea seeking access to the SIT report on the Gulbarg Society massacre case on Tuesday. Zakia is the wife of slain Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri. The SIT may submit its reply on Tuesday.

Zakia has accused 64 senior politicians, bureaucrats and police officers of committing crimes during the riots.

A Perth District Court sentenced Rajesh Kumar on Monday after he pleaded guilty for changing the outcomes of IELTS test apparently to get permanent residence in Australia.

US mulls missile defense shields in Asia, Mideast

The United States is reportedly seeking to expand its missile systems to Asia and the Middle East by building regional shields against ballistic missiles in those regions.

Madelyn Creedon, a senior Pentagon official, disclosed on Monday that Washington is engaging in two sets of trilateral dialogues on the issue – one with Japan and Australia and the other with Japan and South Korea.

She added that the shields are intended to counter threats posed by Iran and North Korea to the duo’s neighbors and help defend the US from any long-range missiles.
