Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani met here Tuesday and said the two countries had charted the right path to resolve their issues and decided to intensify dialogue.

The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit here in an unscheduled informal meeting, reviewed their improving bilateral relations, said sources.

Pakistani girl raped by cops, attempts suicide

A college girl attempted suicide after she was allegedly raped by five policemen when she was returning home from tuition in Pakistan’s Punjab province, a media report said.

The student was raped by five policemen in Sheikhupura last week and attempted to end her life Monday, reported Dawn.

The five suspects are on the run.

The policemen were on patrol duty Friday evening when they stopped the 16-year-old girl who was returning home from tuition along with her cousin.

The policemen threatened the girl’s male cousin and forced him to leave. They then raped her.

Poll shows sharp drop in Americans’ support for Afghan war

A new opinion poll shows the Americans’ support for the war in Afghanistan has plunged sharply, hitting a record low after the recent massacre of at least 16 civilians by US soldiers in the Asian country.

The latest New York Times/CBS survey found that 69 percent of the respondents believe the United States should not be fighting in Afghanistan any more.

The poll, conducted among 986 adults from March 21-25, shows a 16-point increase in dissatisfaction with the decade-plus-long war, compared with a similar survey four months ago. The figure was 53 percent back in November.

No Shari`ah in Tunisia Charter: Islamists

The moderate Islamist Ennahda party rejected Monday, March 26, calls for making Islamic Shari`ah as the main source of legislation in Tunisia’s new constitution.

“Ennahda has decided to retain the first clause of the previous constitution without change,” senior party official Ameur Larayed told Radio Mosaique.

“We want the unity of our people and we do not want divisions.”

The party, which leads Tunisia’s government, has not formally announced its final position.

Another reshuffle100 IPS officers transferred in UP

In yet another reshuffle, the Uttar Pradesh government has transferred more than 100 IPS officers including DGs and police chiefs of several districts. Director General, PAC, Dev Raj Nagar has been given additional charge of chairman, police recruitment and promotion board, whereas DG Human Rights BM Saraswat has been shifted to training headquarters, an official spokesman said in Lucknow on Tuesday.

The transfers were issued late last night.

20 killed in Pakistan bus accident

At least 20 people died in eastern Pakistan on Monday when their bus rolled over several times after the driver lost control of the vehicle in a high speed.

The accident occurred around 5.30 pm in Shekhupura district of Punjab province. Dozens of people were injured. The bus was heading for Lahore, the provincial capital.

The toll could increase as some of the injured were in critical condition, Xinhua quoted the local Urdu channel Dunya TV as saying.

Haqqani’s plea to depose via video link denied

A judicial commission probing a mysterious memo that sought US help to stave off a military coup in Pakistan on Monday rejected former envoy Husain Haqqani’s plea to testify via video link from London.

The three-judge commission appointed by the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing till tomorrow after turning down Haqqani’s request.

The former Ambassador to the US, who is currently outside Pakistan, has filed an appeal in the apex court to be allowed to depose via a video link.
