Andhra Pradesh policemen caught on camera slapping teen repeatedly

On camera, a policeman is seen slapping a young boy repeatedly. That footage – filmed by a local TV channel in Karminagar in Andhra Pradesh, has prompted an inquiry by the state’s human rights commission (NDTV did not film the incident; the footage used is courtesy TV9 channel).

“This incident appears to be barbaric and violates the human rights of the boy, who was dealt with unlawfully,” said a member of the commission, Kakumanu Peda Peri Reddy.

The boy who is assaulted repeatedly and with full force is 16 years old. The police has been asked to explain what happened by March 7.

Tibetans hold protests in Delhi against India-China border talks

About a dozen Tibetans, including women, today staged a protest outside the Hyderabad House objecting to the border talks between India and China claiming that Beijing cannot discuss the issue before giving freedom to Tibet.

Draped in Tibetan flags and carrying anti-China placards, the protesters assembled in front of the Hyderabad House near India Gate in the morning where External Affairs Minister S M Krishna was holding bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.

U.S. court dismisses case against Rajapaksa

A U.S. court has dismissed a lawsuit filed against the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, noting he is immune from lawsuits as a sitting head of state.

Dismissing the case on Wednesday, the U.S. District Judge, Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, said that Mr. Rajapaksa has immunity as head of state.

The U.S. State Department had entered a motion asking the case be dismissed because of the immunity precedent.

Mr. Rajapaksa was sued by families of alleged torture victims under the Torture Victim Protection Act passed by Congress in 1992.

11 Indian fishermen held by Maldivian Navy

Eleven Indian fishermen have been taken into custody by the Maldivian Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), officials said in Chennai on Thursday.

“All are from Kanyakumari district. We are looking into this issue,” District Collector S. Nagarajan told PTI.

The fishermen had ventured into to sea off the Kerala last week and were to return on February 25, 2012 official sources said.

Fodder scam: CBI court frames charges against Lalu, 2 others

A CBI court on Thursday framed charges against former Bihar Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra and Janata Dal (United) MP Jagdish Sharma in connection with the multi-crore fodder scam.

Charges were also framed against former RJD MP R.K. Rana in connection with the case.

Designated CBI Judge V.K. Srivastava framed the charges against them in the case relating to fraudulent withdrawals of around Rs. 46 lakh by officials of State Animal Husbandry Department from Banka and Bhagalpur treasuries through fake enforced bills between 1994-96.

Infant stolen from Mumbai hospital

The baby boy, who was suffering from skin infection, was brought to the Cama and Albless Hospital this afternoon by his 20-year-old mother Durga Kale when the accused, suspected to be aged between 60-70 years, tricked her before taking away the boy, police said.

The incident occurred at the OPD premises when the boy’s mother, who hails from Chennai, went to collect a form required to complete hospital procedures for the treatment of the infant.

According to police, Kale, who resides at Churchage area, had taken her child to the hospital around 1 pm.

Yuvraj feeling weak after second cycle of chemo

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh, who is currently undergoing treatments for lung cancer in the USA, has informed that his conditions would be assessed on March 7, the day when a scan would take place.

Yuvraj also informed that his second chemo cycle has finished on Thursday and he was feeling week after that. He, however, hoped that tomorrow his condition would be better.

Yuvraj wrote on micro blogging site Twitter: “Second cycle has finished today ! Had a bleomycin shot feeling weak but I`m sure tom will be a better day ! My next scan dated on 7th march (sic).”

Rupee down 20 paise in early trade

The rupee on Thursday depreciated by 20 paise to 49.21 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, due to fresh demand from importers for the American currency amid strong global cues.

Forex dealers said weakness in euro and other Asian currencies against the dollar overseas also weighed on the rupee’s value.

Weak opening in the equity market and fresh demand for the US currency from importers, put pressure on the rupee, they added.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 184.83 points, or 1.04 per cent, at 17,567.85 in early trade.
