Four NGOs are facing government probes over foreign funding they received and whether they misused funds by spending it on funding the protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The Prime Minister’s statements that US-based NGOs who don’t appreciate India’s energy needs may be funding the Indian NGOs orchestrating the protests here, have raised a furore over NGOs and their regulation.

The NGOs often focus on niche developmental or social projects, and there are also numerous registered social groups which are involved in both religious and social activities.

Spicejet passengers allegedly ill-treated, asked to deplane

Passengers of a Pune-bound SpiceJet flight from Jaipur were allegedly ill-treated at the Ahmedabad airport and asked to deplane by the airline staff who said the aircraft had to be sent to Delhi for a mandatory technical check-up of its engines.

Passengers claimed that the flight (SIG 345) left Jaipur as per schedule last evening but landed at Ahmedabad airport, where they were asked to deboard and when they confronted the airline staff, they were manhandled.

Yuvraj completes second cycle of chemotherapy

USA, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has completed the second cycle of chemotherapy, continuing his recovery from a rare germ cell cancer in Boston, United States.

“Second cycle has finished today! Had a bleomycin shot feeling weak but I’m sure tom will be a better day! My next scan dated on 7th march,” the 30-year-old left-hander tweeted.

Yuvraj had last month stated that the tumor between his lungs is almost out of his system. Yuvraj, who has been in Boston since last month, is expected to be back on the field in the first week of May, according to his doctor.

2 fishermen killed in midnight collision

In yet another case involving fishermen off the Kerala coast, fishing vessel Don 1 was hit by an unknown vessel in the wee hours on Thursday morning.

Two fishermen were killed and two others are missing when the collision took place off the Kollam coast.

Of the six fishermen in the boat, two swam to safety, it is being said. The deceased were identified as Francis Justine and Xavier, police said.

A massive search operation has been launched by the Navy and the coast guard to search the missing vessel.

CPI to support Telangana candidates

In a setback to the TDP, the CPI on Wednesday decided to support the TRS in five of the seven Assembly constituencies, where bypolls will be held on March 18.

Of the seven assembly seats, six are in Telangana while the other (Kovur) is in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

CPI State Secretary K Narayana said his party would support the sitting TDP MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy who quit in support of separate Telangana and is seeking re-election from Nagarkurnool.

Inter exams from March 2

The intermediate public examination for the academic year 2011-12 will be held from March 2 to March 19.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Board of Intermediate Education secretary M Subramanyam said that the first year examinations would be conducted from March 2 to March 17 followed by second year examination from March 3 to 19.

Facebook must pay license fee or face action: Yahoo

Yahoo Inc has threatened action against Facebook if the the social networking giant does not pay licence fee for using technologies which the Internet search major claimed come under its intellectual property rights.

“We must insist that Facebook either enter into a licensing agreement or we will be compelled to move forward unilaterally to protect our rights,” Yahoo said in a statement.

Yahoo, however, did not disclose which are the specific technologies, for which Facebook should pay.

Iran firms beat sanctions

CBSE board exams begin today

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board exams for Class X and XII will begin today. For Class XII students, the first paper will be of English and for class X pupils, it will be the painting exam.

Tense students in the capital are buried in books, some in a race to finish their courses while others to revise. Doctors, however, advise them not to over-study and get a good night’s sleep.

With English being the first exam, the stress levels are low among the students.

Review beginning in Muslim spying case

Months after receiving complaints about the New York Police Department’s surveillance of entire American Muslim neighborhoods, the Justice Department is just beginning a review to decide whether to investigate civil rights violations.

Attorney General Eric Holder told Congress the status of the review Tuesday.

The announcement bothered some Democrats, who said they were under the impression the Justice Department had been reviewing the matter since last late last year.

Man dies of stroke after police atrocity

A 66-year old man died of a heart attack after being allegedly pushed and kicked by two policemen in New Delhi while he was trying to save his son from being beaten up.

The incident took place at the busy Dhaula Kuan police booth on Wednesday when the father-son duo asked the policemen for water to fix their car.

Soon an argument ensued after which the cops allegedly started bashing the two.

The victim, Anil Kumar Arora, was taken to a hospital after intervention from senior officers but was declared dead on arrival.
