Give blast victims artificial limbs in 3 weeks, AIIMS told

The Delhi High Court Thursday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to provide within three weeks artificial limbs to victims of the 2011 blast that took place outside the court premises.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also directed four victims, seeking artificial limbs, to visit AIIMS Friday for the treatment.

Lawyer appearing for AIIMS told the court that the blast victims who had sought the limbs were called by it Feb 17 but none of them turned up.

LeT now targets local youths with passports: Police

Changing its strategy, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) guerrilla outfit has been trying to engage local boys, holding passports, after its foreign cadres started coming under pressure from the security forces, a senior police official said here Thursday.

“After things started becoming hot for the foreign cadres of the LeT in the state, the outfit’s changed strategy has been to involve local boys, especially those having passports, to continue its subversive activities,” Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S.M. Sahai said here.

The labor department said the number of people applying for jobless benefits decreased 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 351,000 last week, holding the four-year low level.

Meanwhile, US personal income gained 0.3 percent in January, according to the commerce department.

Also lifting the market, retail sales came in better than analysts had expected, another proof that the recovery is gaining momentum.

At 51, Shayne could be world’s oldest horse

A 51-year-old chestnut stallion from Brentwood, Essex, could be the world’s oldest horse, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Shayne lives in the same town as Pip, the 24-year-old terrier who is thought to be the world’s oldest dog.

The elderly nag has been living at the Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary since 2007, and is still in better shape than many of his stable mates.

He is believed to have inherited the title of the world’s oldest living horse after the death of the previous holder in 2004.

Reddy returns to Bangalore Jail

Gali Janardhana Reddy, the struggling businessman-turned-mining baron who once dictated terms to the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka, comes to Bangalore early Friday for the first time in six months, as an accused in illegal mining.

Reddy, a former BJP minister in Karnataka, is being brought by road from Chanchalaguda Central Jail in Hyderabad, about 600 km away, by the Central Bureau of Investigation team to present him in a court in Bangalore in connection with an illegal mining case.

Rajnath slams Mayawati over deteriorating law and order situation in UP

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh on Thursday hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati over her failure to maintain law and order in the state.

Congress on Thursday hit out at yoga guru Ramdev, who has announced his entry into the fast moving consumer goods and herbal retail markets with his ‘swadeshi’ line of products, saying the move called for introspection if one should do business or politics in saffron clothes.

“While we should not comment on anybody’s personal business, it does call for introspection whether one should be doing business or politics in saffron clothes,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters while reacting to questions on Ramdev’s announcement.

Plea against Amar Singh dismissed

A Delhi court Thursday dismissed a plea for registering an abduction case against Rajya Sabha member and former leader of Samajwadi Party Amar Singh and his two aides.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Neena Krishna Bansal noted that no prima facie case is made out against Amar Singh and said: “The petition is dismissed.”

The plea was filed by Hashmat Ali, a prosecution witness in the cash-for-votes episode in parliament ahead of a vote of confidence in 2008. Ali had challenged a magistrate’s order on his petition.

Gali Janardhana Reddy taken to Bangalore by road

Former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy was Thursday taken to Bangalore by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by road.

After day-long suspense on the mode of transport, the jail authorities decided to shift him to Bangalore in a motor vehicle.

Janardhana Reddy was brought out of Chanchalguda Central Jail Thursday evening and escorted to a mini bus which left for Bangalore along with police escort vehicles amid tight security.

Two sub-inspectors of police and eight policemen are escorting Janardhana Reddy, who would be produced in a Bangalore court Friday.

Dia Mirza has posed as a snake to raise her voice against animal skin trade in an ad for animal rights organisation People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Another suspected LeT operative arrested from Jharkhand

One more suspected LeT operative has been arrested from Jharkhand by Delhi Police taking the number of terrorists picked up in the last two days to three.

Taufeek Ahmed Peer (20), cousin of Ehtesham, who was arrested here yesterday, was picked up by police from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, sources said here.

They said no explosives were found on Peer and he is being brought to Delhi.

Delhi civic polls on April 15

Elections to the recently trifurcated Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the city’s main civic body, will be held April 15, state Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta said Thursday.

An estimated 11,278,000 Delhi residents will be eligible to vote in the polls from south, north and east Delhi zones. The model code of conduct for the political parties will be in place from March 5. The balloting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Kidnapped student rescued, three held

A Patna school student abducted eight days ago was Thursday freed from Bihar’s Vaishali district and three people, including his girlfriend, were arrested for the crime, police said.

Aditya Raj, son of a farmer and a student of Class 12 in a Patna school, was kidnapped Feb 23 from near Moinulhaque Stadium here.

Police raided a colony near Hajipur and rescued Aditya Raj, said an official in Vaishali. They said a ransom of Rs.10 million was demanded for the release of Aditya Raj.

“We received a ransom call twice in the last seven days,” said Aditya’s elder brother Sumit Kumar.

Woman chews boy’s fingers in jail

A 35-year-old woman who is awaiting trial is confined in Ajmer prison, chewed off a 4-year-old boy’s fingers in a horrific incident. The woman is behind bars for throwing her son off a moving train.

The boy lives with his mother, who is also a prisoner, inside the four walls. The mother was also injured in the attack, when she tried to save her son, reports The Times of India.

Osama hid terror attack codes in Bible?

Two copies of the Bible found at Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan may contain coded clues to future terror attacks by al Qaeda, British media on Wednesday quoted Pakistani ISI officials as saying.

The books had been concealed at the house of the slain al Qaeda chief in Abbottabad, where he was shot by US Navy Seals last May.

They may contain coded clues to future terror attacks, the Sun tabloid reported.

The concealed Christian holy books were unearthed by demolition crews sent in to bring down the three-storeyed mansion to the ground.

City police cracks murder case, 6 held

Man gets life sentence for raping friend’s wife

A criminal court in Ras Al Khaimah sentenced an Asian man to life in prison after he was convicted of raping his friend’s wife.

The unnamed defendant was arrested last year after the Asian woman reported him to the police, Alkhaleej daily said.

“The court found him guilty of taking advantage of his friend’s travel abroad to go to his house and rape his wife,” it said.

Kishenji’s successor, 4 aides held in Kolkata

A Maoist leader, said to be the successor of slain rebel chieftain Kishenji, and four of his aides were arrested from various parts of this West Bengal capital in a daylong operation, police said Thursday. A court has sent them to police custody till March 13.

“Rama Krishna alias R.K,, a mechanical engineer and chief of the (banned) Communist Party of India-Maoist’s Central Technical Committee who hails from Andhra Pradesh and is known to have succeeded Kishenji and four other Maoists were sent to custody of Kolkata Police till March 13,” chief police prosecutor S.C. Gupta said.
