Dr Shankar Rao predicts YSR Cong victory on Kovvur seat

Former minister Dr P Shankar Rao on Thursday predicted victory for YSR Congress candidate Nannapuneni Prasanna Kumar Reddy in Kovvur Assembly segment in the ensuing by-elections.

Talking to media persons, Dr Shankar Rao stated that the Dalits and Christians of Seemandhra region would support Prasanna Kumar Reddy’s candidature in the by-elections. Stating that the election in Kovvur Assembly constituency was mainly between YSR Congress and Telugu Desam Party, he said that the Congress party would get third place in by-elections.

Communist Party of India MLA Sambasiva Rao on Thursday demanded that the state government release a `White Paper’ on the allocation of 65 acres of land in the surroundings of Hyderabad for various firms violating the rules and regulations.

Talking to media persons at Assembly media point, the CPI MLA stated that the government order judicial probe into issue to get comprehensive report as land worth Rs 2,030 crore has been misappropriated. He suspected the involvement of ministers, MLAs and influential officials in the allotment of lands.

US Senate defeats birth control amendment

The Democratic controlled US Senate Thursday defeated a Republican sponsored amendment to turn back parts of President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform.

The amendment, introduced by Republican Senator Roy Blunt to an unrelated highway bill, would exempt employers from providing employees free birth control coverage on moral and religious grounds. It was defeated in a vote of 51-48.

‘Military action against Iran, Syria to violate international laws’

Russia views the decision to carry out military operations against Iran and Syria as a step in violation of international laws, Xinhua reported.

“None denied a key provision of international laws — a decision to use force against a sovereign state should be taken only by the UN Security Council,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview to a newspaper Thursday.

“I truly hope that the international community will be wise enough not to allow such a scenario to happen,” he said.

No plans for early parliamentary polls : Putin

Russian Prime Minister and presidential candidate Vladimir Putin Friday ruled out the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections in the country.

Asked if he had plans to disband the Russian parliament’s lower house — the State Duma — and hold early polls if he won the March 4 elections, Putin said: “no”.

Government seeks time till March 2013 for 2G licence auction

The central government Thursday moved the Supreme Court requesting time till March 2013 for auctioning the 2G licences and allocation of spectrum, cancelled by the apex court by its Feb 2 order.

The application for clarificatory orders/direction has sought the court’s nod for conducting the auction of the cancelled 2G licences broadly in accordance with the roadmap set forth by it.

India, China to start maritime dialogue, border meet next week

In key trust building steps ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to New Delhi later this month, India and China Thursday decided to set up a maritime dialogue and agreed to hold the maiden round of the newly-minted border mechanism in Beijing next week.

The two countries also decided to intensify counter-terror cooperation and collaboration on a host of global issues including the international financial crisis and climate change.

2 students stabbed, 1 fatally, at Chicago school

Classes have been canceled at a Chicago high school where two students were stabbed, one of them fatally.

A third student is in custody after the stabbings early Thursday that happened as students were entering AMIkids Infinity Chicago on the city’s far South Side.

The incident happened before students got to the school’s security checkpoint.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death but no other information about the teen was immediately available.

North Korea freezes nuclear programme for US food aid

North Korea has agreed to freeze its nuclear programme in exchange for food assistance from the US. It will also let IAEA inspectors monitor the moratorium.

Obama administration has called these steps “modest” and that “they merely unlock the door to the resumption, eventually, of Six-Party talks (which collapsed in 2009)”.

North Korea will implement a moratorium on long-range missile launches, nuclear tests and nuclear activities at Yongbyon, including uranium enrichment activities.

Tuition teacher vowed marriage, used nude photos to perpetrate rape

A college lecturer and his two friends have been arrested for allegedly raping a minorgirl at nearby Kovilpatti since 2009, using her nude photographs to blackmail her, police said.

They said the 25-year-old lecturer, who was running a tuition centre, went back on his promise to marry the 16-year-old girl and had been sexually exploiting her since that year, along with his two friends, using photographs of her taken after he laced her cool drinks with drugs.

The three were arrested yesterday on a complaint by the girl’s parents, police said.

A Delhi court today issued a fresh non-bailable warrant (NBW) against cricketer-turned Congress MP Mohd Azharuddin after he failed to appear before it in connection with a cheque bounce case.
Metropolitan magistrate Vikrant Vaid issued the warrant against the former captain of the Indian cricket team for March 7 after he failed to appear before it in pursuance of the earlier NBW issued against him on February 18.

Pak Army brigadier planned to bomb GHQ with F-16 jet: Report

A Pakistan Army brigadier, currently facing court martial for alleged links with the banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir, had conspired with an air force pilot to bomb the General Headquarters with a F-16 jet during a conference of top commanders.

Brig Ali Khan was arrested last year on suspicion of having contacts with the Hizb-ut-Tahrir.

He has been accused of trying to stage a rebellion against the government and planning an attack on the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

His family has denied the charges.

On the trial’s fifth day, Geoffrey Irving testified to the jury that Ravi told him that he had set up a web camera in his dorm room and was planning to do it again that night, referring to the evening of September 21, 2010.

Azhar Deliberately Avoiding Appearance: Court

A Delhi court today issued fresh non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Congress MP Mohd Azharrudin saying he is “deliberately” avoiding appearance before it in connection with a cheque-bouncing case.

Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Vikrant Vaid issued the NBW for March 7, while dismissing a plea made on behalf of Azhar to exempt the cricketer-turned-politician from personal appearance in the court on the ground that he was busy in poll campaigning in the ongoing UP assembly elections.

Nigerian arrested with Rs.2.5 crore of cocaine

A Nigerian involved in drug trafficking was arrested here and 250 grams of cocaine worth Rs.2.5 crore in the international court seized from him, police said Thursday.

Humphrey O. Agbaru was arrested Wednesday from west Delhi’s Vikaspuri area on a tip off.

“He was a member of an international drug trafficking syndicate operating from Mumbai and Delhi. The drugs were supplied to high-profile clients and rave parties,” said a police official.

Sanjeeda, Aamir to tie knot Friday

Popular television actors Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh, who have been dating for the past six years, will exchange wedding vows in a nikaah ceremony here Friday.

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Khar Gymkhana.
