SC rejects plea to transfer Aarushi case to Delhi

The Supreme court on Friday rejected the plea of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar and refused to transfer trial of the Aarushi murder case from Ghaziabad to Delhi. The apex court also said that only parties concerned, their counsel would be allowed inside the court during the trial in
Ghaziabad court.

The judgement was delivered by a bench of justices BS Chauhan and JS Khehar which had on February 27 reserved its order on the couple’s plea.

US lands force in India to control LET and terror outfits

US Special forces teams are currently stationed in five South Asian countries including India as part of the counter-terrorism co-operation with these nations, a top Pentagon commander has disclosed.

These teams have been deployed by US Pacific Command as part of its effort to enhance their counter-terrorism capabilities, in particular in the maritime domain, Admiral Robert Willard, the PACOM Commander said yesterday.

‘Ready to fight battle for Telangana in court’

Expressing support to the separate Telangana statehood demand, Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy on Thursday said he is ready to fight a legal battle for the cause.

He said he is ready to file a petition over the demand either in Supreme Court or in the High Court here and asked the pro-Telangana lawyers to send him details of the issue.

Citing the examples of his “legal victories” in Rama Sethu issue and 2G spectrum scam case, he said a similar success can be achieved on Telangana issue as the government allegedly went back on its promise to form a separate state.

CBI charges framed against Lalu, Jagannath in connection fodder scam

Six months after their appearance before a special Criminal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here, charges have been framed against Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad and the former Bihar Chief Minister, Jagannath Mishra, in connection with the multi-crore fodder scam case.

Mr. Prasad and Mr. Mishra are among the prime accused in the scam that finally unravelled in 1996, proving that funds in excess of Rs. 900 crore had been siphoned off over a two-decade period by politicians and bureaucrats belonging to successive administrations on the pretext of purchasing livestock feed.

EC examining complaints against Kiran, TDP MP

American teacher killed in north Iraq

An American gym teacher was killed Thursday when a student in the crowded classroom pulled out a gun, shot the teacher and then as his terrified classmates fled the room, shot himself, officials and eyewitnesses said.

The incident marked a rare violent death of an American in the relatively peaceful Kurdish region, which has been largely immune from the chaotic violence that has defined the rest of Iraq since the US invasion.

Attorney general seeks toughest penalty for rape

Dubai The crime of rape is alien to UAE society, Dubai’s attorney general stressed, pledging to push for maximum punishment against perpetrators.

“Dubai Public Prosecution will not spare any effort, whatsoever, to combat the crime of rape or any other crime of the same nature. Rape is an alien to the UAE society,” attorney general Essam Eisa Al Humaidan said yesterday.

Akbar attack case: Cops seeks Pahelwan’s bail cancellation in SC

The state government has approached the Supreme Court seeking the cancellation of bail granted to Mohammed Bin Omer Yafai alias Mohammed Pahelwan and eight others allegedly involved in the attack on MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

According to sources the final argument in this case would take place before the double bench comprising Justice B S Chauhan and Justice A Kheir today. On April 30 last year the prime accused Mohammed Pahelwan and his family members allegedly carried out an attack on Akbaruddin Owaisi in the Barkas area.

2 crore Indian children study in English-medium schools

The last eight years have seen a staggering rise in the number of children studying in English-medium schools across the country. Data on school enrolment for 2010-11 shows that, for the first time, the number of children enrolled in English-medium schools from Classes I to VIII has crossed the two crore mark – a 274% rise since 2003-04.

Lecturer held for raping minor for 3 years

A college lecturer and three of his friends were arrested by the police for raping a minor girl for over three years. The lecturer had intimidated the girl with her nude photographs and video, which were taken after sedating her.

The arrested were identified as R Arun of Rajiv Nagar in Kovilpatti, his friends Sugumaran and Ayyappan, also from Kovilpatti and Ramkumar from Karimedu in Madurai. Police have seized the mobile phones, laptops and memory cards from the four that contained photographs and videos of the girl.

Israeli rabbi arrested for repeat rape

An Israeli rabbi has been charged with repeated sexual assault on students in a girls’ school in a city north of Tel Aviv where he used to work as principal.

Rabbi Yigal Krispel, 47, was arrested last week after two former students at a school for Haredi (Orthodox Jewish) girls filed complaints against him saying he had sexually assaulted them.

The Kfar Saba Magistrate’s Court has extended the remand of the Netanya rabbi, who has also been accused of raping a young teacher.

Russian girl assaulted by MLA’s son

The son of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator from Uttar Pradesh has been accused of assaulting and threatening his Russian female friend in her south Delhi house and escaping with her passport, cellphone and debit card.

Vivek Singh, son of BSP legislator Chandraveer Singh, was in an inebriated state when the incident took place on Wednesday morning in the 24-year-old victim’s home in Mehrauli, police said. The woman hails from Moscow and works as an intern with an architect in Gurgaon.

Pakistani Islamic scholar Tahir-ul-Qadri’s reported remarks advising Muslims to forget the Gujarat riots have sparked a row with some Muslim organisations opposing his ongoing visit to Hyderabad.

Police have stepped up security for Qadri, who arrived here Tuesday on a five-day trip amid criticism from Jamiat-ul-Ulema and others for his remarks during a visit to Gujarat last week.

Geelani gave recommendation for LeT militant

Pro-Pakistan hardliner Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had given a recommendation letter to Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Athesham Malik, arrested by the Delhi Police, for getting a Pakistani Visa.

Official sources said a copy of the recommendation letter given by Geelani was found in the papers seized from 24-year old Malik.

The sources said recoveries made from Athesham, who had undergone a training in Pakistan in December, 2011, were material for fabrication of IED, including wires, flash powder used in crackers and sulphuric acid.

Gayle remains in exile for Aussies visit

Former captain Chris Gayle was again overlooked by the West Indies when a 30-man training squad for the forthcoming one-day and Twenty20 series against Australia was announced on Thursday.

Gayle hasn’t played for the West Indies since last year’s World Cup and has been involved in a long-running dispute with the West Indies board.

The WICB said that 17 contracted players, along with 13 others who are under consideration for selection, will participate in a two-week training camp in Barbados from March 1 to 12.

The first one-dayer takes place at St Vincent on March 16.

2 students drown in reservoir

Two students of tenth standard drowned when they were swimming in a reservoir at Karvetinagar mandal, about 50 kMs from here today. Police here said the tragedy occurred when nearly 35 students, including girls from a private school in Tirupati, went to the Ammapalli reservoir located at Krishnapuram village for a picnic. The two bodies – Chandu and Kamala – were fished out and sent to Puttur government hospital for post-mortem, police added. UNI
