NCTC ‘a Backdoor’ Ploy of Centre to Grab Power: Modi

Demanding that the Inter-State Council be activated further, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said here that the proposed National Counter Terrorism Centre was nothing but UPA government’s ploy to take away states’ powers.

Accusing the “Delhi Sarkar” of weakening federal system, Modi questioned the need of NCTC instead of anti-terror laws such as POTA. Through this proposed body, the Centre wanted to use the Intelligence Bureau in states’ domain, he said.

NASA was hacked 13 times last year

NASA said hackers broke into its computer systems 13 times last year, stealing employee credentials and gaining access to mission-critical projects in breaches that could compromise US national security.

Britain may no longer be a Christian country by 2030 as the number of non-believers is set to overtake the number of Christians, a media report said.

Christianity is losing more than half a million believers every year, while the count of atheists and agnostics is going up by almost 750,000 annually, the Daily Mail reported.

Research by the House of Commons Library found that while Christianity has declined, other religions have seen sharp increases.

Minor raped, murdered in Thane

A 12-year-old girl from Mumbra township was allegedly raped and subsequently murdered here, police said today. PI P N Gughe of Mumbra police station said the girl, a sixth grade student was a resident of Mumbra Devi colony and was returning home last evening when accused Bhagarsingh Rathod abducted her and then sexually abused her at a lonely place.

He later killed her and dumped her body in a gunny bag and left it outside a house, police said. The police have registered offences under sections 363, 376, 302, 201 of the IPC against the alleged accused and a hunt is on for him.

Soldier, 2 bombers killed as bombing hits Yemen military camp

According to a statement by the Yemeni army, two bombers smashed their explosives-laden car into the camp in Bayda, 170 km southwest of the capital, Sana’a, on Saturday.

The bombers “who carried out the attack were killed as well as a Republican Guard,” a military official said.

Witnesses say that the three-storey building of the camp was completely destroyed.

The explosion was followed by an exchange of fire between gunmen and security forces.

The son of Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh – who formally stepped down less than a week ago – is the head of Republican Guard units.

Polling for the 60 seats, nearly half of which were bagged by BSP last time, in ten districts began at 7 am and 51.9 per cent polling was registered till 3 PM, Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said.

The maximum 55 per cent polling was registered in Lakhimpur, followed by 53 per cent in Bijnor.

CPM asks govt to ‘come clean’ on presence of US forces

The CPI(M) on Saturday quoted a top US military official as saying that American special forces teams were stationed in India and asked the government to “come clean” on it.

“The government should come clean on the whole range of both the overt and covert military and security relations which exist with the United States,” the party Politburo said in a statement.

‘Country needs another alternative to Cong, BJP’

The CPI on Saturday said that there was hardly any difference between Congress and BJP, as leaders of both the parties were “in jail or out on bail”, and the country needs another alternative.

“The country needs alternative of Congress and BJP because there is no difference between both the parties whose some of their leaders were in jail or on bail,” CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said here.

Bardhan called upon the left parties to come together and unite against communal forces in the country.

Centre puts off meet on NCTC to March 12

The Home Ministry has postponed a meeting of top police and civil officials of all states scheduled for March 9 to end the logjam on NCTC and it will now be held on March 12.

The meeting of the Chief Secretaries, Directors General of Police, state Home Secretaries and Chiefs of state Anti-Terror Squads was convened by the Union Home Secretary to discuss in detail the scope and functions of the NCTC.

Goons smashes girl head with beer bottle

IN AN incident reminiscent of the infamous Jessica Lal murder case, a girl, partying with her friends at a night club in Bangalore, was attacked by a reveller with a beer bottle. The assault left Gina needing 19 stitches on her head and has affected her hearing.

Gina was apparently trying to save her friend from the assailant, Nithin Reddy, who wanted to dance with her. Following repeated rebuffs, Nithin decided to take out his anger on the victim and smashed a beer bottle on her head.

THE RAMPUR police late on Thursday night raided the room at a local hotel in which the Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Prada was staying.

Sensex closes flat in special session

Indian equities markets which opened Saturday for a special 90- minute trading session closed on a flat note. State-run firms were among the major gainers, while some realty scrips edged lower.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 17,648.47 points and closed at 17,636.99 points, barely moving from its Friday close at 17,583.97 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also closed similarly unchanged at 5,359.4 points.

For the week, the Sensex shed 1.6 percent, while the Nifty lost 1.28 percent.

Delhi cop who caused man’s death arrested

A Delhi Police constable who pushed a 66-year-old man leading to his death has been arrested, police said Saturday.

Vikram Singh, who joined the force in 2008, was taken into custody three days after Anil Kumar Arora’s death caused outrage, a police officer said.

Arora was treated roughly by the constable when he intervened in a row between the policeman and his son Tuesday night in Delhi Cantonment area in west Delhi.

Arora fell, suffered a stroke and died, his family said.

US House resolution asks Gujarat to restore religious freedom

To mark the 10th anniversary of Gujarat communal riots, a Democrat lawmaker has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the state government to restore religious freedom.

The non-binding resolution “recognising the 10th anniversary of the tragic communal violence in Gujarat” introduced by Keith Ellison early this week has been sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
