Chiru resigns from AP House membership

Actor-turned-politician K Chiranjeevi Thursday resigned from the membership of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly following his election to Rajya Sabha.

Chiranjeevi, who was elected to the Assembly from temple-town Tirupati in 2009, met Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar and handed over his resignation.

Chiranjeevi will take oath as Rajya Sabha member on April 3. With Chiranjeevi’s resignation, the number of vacancies in the 294-member AP Assembly increases to 18.

Osama’s Yemeni wife stayed in Karachi for almost 9 months

Former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s Yemeni widow Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah lived in Karachi for almost 8-9 months and kept changing her residence six or seven times.

During her interrogation, Amal told a joint investigation team (JIT) comprising of Pakistani civilian and military officials that after the 9/11 terror attacks, she reunited with her husband in Peshawar in 2002.

Punjab on the boil, curfew in Gurdaspur

Curfew was today clamped in Gurdaspur city following communal tension between right-wing Hindu activists and Sikhs.

“Curfew has been imposed in Gurdaspur City after tension mounted between some Shiv Sainiks and other youths, including Sikhs,” Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Mohinder Singh Kainth said.

He said that the Shiv Sainiks had given a call for Gurdaspur bandh today in the wake of registration of cases against some persons following clashes during Punjab bandh yesterday.

Pak population rose by 46.9%:Report

Pakistan’s population increased by 46.9 percent between 1998 and 2011 while Balochistan province witnessed the highest increase in population and Punjab the lowest, according to the preliminary results of the country’s latest census.

Households witnessed an increase of 50.4 percent since 2011 and the population increased from 130,857,717 in 1998 to 192,288,944 in 2011, The News daily quoted preliminary results as showing.

The results did not include three districts of Balochistan, South Waziristan Agency and the regions of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pregnant woman dies of swine flu

A 32-year-old pregnant woman died at Gandhi Hospital on Tuesday night following complications that developed after she tested positive for swine flu. This is the fourth swine flu related death between January and March to be reported by health authorities in the capital.

According to the hospital authorities, the pregnant woman, who was also a diabetic, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. The doctors maintained that they had little time to revive the patient whose condition deteriorated quickly.

Saudis favor Germany for tourism, treatment

Germany is a favored destination for Saudis for holidaying and seeking medical treatment in places like Munich, Frankfort and Stuttgart, representing 50 percent of the overnight stays from the entire GCC region.

Telangana, Sethusamudram rock parliament

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till noon Thursday following demands for a separate Telangana state as well as protests on the Sethusamudram project and the Cauvery waters dispute.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) members from Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh raised the issue of a separate Telangana state for a third day in the Lok Sabha.

They also displayed placards with slogans like “Indecision causing innocent deaths” and “Introduce Telangana Bill, Jai Telangana”.

Avoid disruptions to trade, Manmohan tells BRICS Summit

India on Thursday pitched for avoiding political disruptions that create volatilities in global energy markets affecting trade flow as the BRICS Summit began here to discuss ways to enhance intra-BRICS trade and review the situation in the region.

Addressing the fourth BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also said that the grouping has agreed to examine in “greater detail” a proposal to set up a South-South development bank, funded and managed by BRICS and other developing countries.

He also urged member countries to speak in one voice on key issues such as UNSC reforms.

AP most unsafe for women

Going by the number of cases of crimes against women, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the most unsafe place among the four South Indian states, according to data collated by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).Andhra Pradesh fared the worst on incidents of rape and sexual offences on all aspects including number of cases reported and number of persons arrested, charge-sheeted and convicted.

Iranian ninjas sue Reuters for defamation of character

A group of female Iranian martial artists have taken legal action against Britain’s Reuters news agency for branding them as assassins, Press TV reports.

Last month, Reuters showed a number of Iranian girls training martial arts in a city near Tehran, claiming Iran was training more than 3,000 female ninjas to kill any possible foreign invaders. The distorted Reuters report was picked up by other British media outlets.

Following the strong reaction of Iranian media to the report, Reuters made changes to parts of the report but refused to apologize for slander.

Doctors of Indian origin allowed to practice in India

Govt. of India has decided to permit doctors of Indian origin working abroad to allow them medical practice in the super specialty hospitals of India. If such doctors join as faculty members in medical colleges, they will also be permitted to do private practice.

The objective of the Govt. is to attract highly qualified specialist medical professionals to come to India and settle down here.

No Beds in Kamatipura Hospital

There is a huge building of Govt. Civil Hospital in Kamatipura which was supposed to be a 30 bedded hospital inaugurated by Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu in 2005 is devoid of beds..

It is regrettable that there is not a single bed in the hospital. This hospital is commonly known as Palam hospital. Fifty years back a doctor by name Palam had come from Madras who used to treat plague patients.

Israelis protest racist attack in Jerusalem

More than 100 Jewish activists gathered at a Jerusalem shopping centre on Wednesday night to protest at an attack by Jewish football fans on Israeli Arabs last week.

Members of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, the Israeli Conservative (Masorti) Movement and other groups stood outside the Malcha mall, holding signs in English, Hebrew and Arabic condemning the attack.

Supporters of Beitar Jerusalem football club assaulted Arab employees at the Malcha mall and chanted “death to Arabs” during the attack, according to media reports.

‘Disturbed’ French gunman had split with wife

The 23-year-old man who claimed responsibility for a killing spree in southern France had separated from his wife days before the attacks and was suffering “psychological difficulties”, his lawyer said.

In an interview on Wednesday with a news agency, attorney Christian Etelin sought to portray his now-slain client as a “lone wolf” with no organised crime or terrorist connections and as “an abandoned child” angry at a long-absent father.

Telangana issue in HRC

Telangana Coordination Committee will approach Human Rights Commission for going back from the promise of initiating the process for the formation of Telangana state. OBC certificates for Muslims: Ahmedullah

Mr. Syed Mohammed Ahmedullah, Minister for Minorities Welfare wrote letters to CM, Ministers of Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare and Backward classes Welfare inviting their attention to the inconvenience caused to Muslim students in getting OBC certificates required for Civil Services and other Central level examinations.

He urged them the need to issue appropriate instructions to Revenue officials to facilitate the students in getting these certificates.

Saudi diplomat kidnapped in south Yemen

Saudi Arabia’s deputy consul was kidnapped on his way to work Wednesday in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, a Yemeni security official said.

The gunmen snatched Abdullah Al-Khalidi as he was about to get into his car and they sped off with him in another vehicle, police in the city’s Mansoura District said.

A Saudi Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed the abduction, saying: “It happened this morning. The embassy already contacted the highest security authority in Yemen. They are investigating and trying to find out the reason.”

Students’ certificates issue limit – One month

Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy told that the students are facing a lot of difficulty in obtaining, cast, income and other certificates from the Revenue authorities.

He was responding to a question asked in the AP Assembly about the difficulties of the students in getting the required certificates.

He said that the maximum period for issuing these certificates has been fixed at 30 days.

Mid-term polls predicted by Janardhan Reddy
