US-made bomb killed Iran expert: Report

The United States provided an anti-Iran terrorist group with the bomb used to assassinate Iranian scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan last month, a report has revealed.

Two bombs were handed over to the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) in the Iraqi city of Arbil by the Americans, the Resalat daily reported on Monday.

The first bomb killed Ahmadi Roshan, but the second one was discovered by intelligence and security personnel around Resalat Square in the capital Tehran, the report said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appeared to climb down Monday and talked of reconciliation rather than confrontation with its estranged chief sponsor Sahara India.

The board’s devil-may-care tone was missing when its president N.Srinivasan said the BCCI only has “perceptional differences” with Sahara India, the Team India’s sponsor for 11 years, and insisted that all the problems would be sorted out through dialogue.

Delhi told to pay damages for Tihar inmate’s suicide

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday asked the Delhi government to pay Rs.1 lakh to the kin of a Tihar Jail inmate who committed suicide after jail authorities failed to diagnose his prolonged ailment.

The commission dismissed the government’s argument that undertrial Ashok Kumar, 21, who hanged himself Dec 15, 2007, was given appropriate medical treatment by jail doctors.

“It is a clear case of medical negligence, apart from lapse on part of jail officials that enabled the prisoner to commit suicide,” an NHRC statement said.

Calcutta HC stays compensation to hooch victims’ families

Kolkata, February 06: The Calcutta High Court Monday stayed the payment of compensation declared by the West Bengal government to the families of victims of last December’s hooch tragedy in South 24 Parganas.

The division bench of Chief Justice J.N. Patel and Justice Sambuddha Chakrabarti stayed the payment of compensation for eight weeks in a public interest litigation filed by two advocates Chittaranjan Panada and Basabi Raichowdhury, challenging the state government’s move to pay compensation.

New Delhi, February 06: A human trafficking and prostitution asepct was being suspected in battered baby Falak’s case as more sordid details emerged Monday with the arrest of two more people. One of them was a woman who allegedly forced the child’s biological mother to re-marry and was responsible for the disappearance of Falak’s siblings.

The biological mother of Falak has been identified as Munni Khatoon. Police traced her and brought her to Delhi Sunday from Jhunjhnu district in Rajasthan. According to police, two of her children are untraceable.

ashington, February 06: US President Barack Obama says he does not think Israel has decided whether to launch a military strike against Iran over its atomic activities.

“I don’t think that Israel has made a decision on what they need to do. I think they, like us, believe that Iran has to stand down on its nuclear program,” Obama said in an interview with NBC television network on Sunday.

He added that Israel and the United States would work “in lockstep” on Iran.

Awards for social scientists soon: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, February 06: The government proposes constituting an award for social scientists who excel in their field on the lines of the Bhatnagar awards for scientists, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday.

“For scientists we have the Bhatnagar awards, but nothing for social scientists. We have proposed ten annual awards to recognize advancement in the field of social science,” Sibal said.

The minister was speaking at a conference organised by the Indian Council of Social Science & Research.
