US blocks Iranian banks, Govt properties

Washington, February 07: US-Iran ties hit a new low on Monday as the Obama administration ordered blocking of Iranian government properties and financial institutions in America. Obama said that additional sanctions are needed due to the “deceptive practices” by Iran’s banks including the Central Bank to conceal transactions. The US has accused Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapons programme against stiff world opposition.

Meanwhile, US banks have been given new powers to freeze assets linked to the government.

Double salaries for maid in dubai

Despite the financial woes of many residents in Dubai since the economic slowdown began in 2009, salaries of maids in the city have doubled.

Residents of the city complain that there have been no hikes in the past few years but the situation is very different in their homes.

The asking rates of maids these days are much higher than what is set by their respective consulates.

Recommended salaries for Indian maids is Dh1,100 as advised by the Indian Embassy, while new regulations from the Philippines say the minimum salary should be Dh1,400.

Salman visit US again for health issue

Salman Khan, who is riding high on the success of his movies, is also facing a setback when it comes to his health.

Now, the actor has decided to put a hold on his projects and give priority to his health as Salman will be going to USA for a health check up and examine his brain aneurysm.

Church to declare war on Obama

North Sydney, February 07: Prominent Catholic leaders across the US have deepened their fight against the Obama administration.

The fight is over a provision of the health reform law announced on January 20 that would require health insurance plans – including those offered by institutions such as Catholic-affiliated hospitals and universities – to offer free birth control including sterilization, the Daily Mail reported.

According to estimates, there are some 70 million Catholic voters – and many could be posed to vote against the president in the crucial upcoming election.

CBI probe into waqf properties demanded

Telangana Rashtra Samithi mull over sending a letter to CBI which is investigating Emaar properties scam, to identify waqf lands. Party politburo member Mohammad Mahmood Ali told that he will talk to TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on the issue and if possible a letter from the party chief will be sent to the CBI.

He claimed that TRS is serious over protection of waqf properties in the state and party chief Chandrasekhar Rao has raised his voice for the protection of waqf properties in various forums.

Cong actress candidate beaten up, BSP man arrested

It might be proved as a major setback for Mayawati and her party – Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) as its candidate Rambhual Nishad has been arrested over several charges including rioting. Nishad has been taken under custody following an incident where he allegedly thrashed Congress candidate and TV actress – Kajal Nishad during campaigning.

In the FIR against the BSP candidate, he has been charged under Sections 147 (rioting), 323(voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of IPC.

Statues targeted again

Statues of B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi were targeted by unidentified miscreants in Warangal and Mahbubnagar districts on Monday despite the police assuring a foolproof security.

An Ambedkar statue, which was not unveiled yet, was set on fire at Vuppugallu village of Zaffargadh mandal in Warangal on Monday.

Villagers and members of SC/ST associations rushed to the area and doused the flame. While the cloth, which covered the statue was burnt, only some portions of the statue caught fire.

Iran’s Female Ninjas, Nearly 3,500 Women Trained To Defend Iran

Iran has so far trained nearly 3,500 women in ninja martial arts.

A small Ninjutsu club in Iran opened in 1989 has 3,500 women now being trained to become kunoichi – female ninjas, reports Daily Mail.

Women brandishing deadly weapons while performing back flips and gravity-defying stunts are a common sight at this club.

Ninjutsu instructor Fatima Muamer told Iranian TV station Press TV that the sport increasingly appeals to women as it helps maintain balance between the body and the mind.

Foreign Minister Krishna to visit China

New Delhi, February 07: External Affairs Minister S M Krishna
will be paying a three-day visit to China from Tuesday in
continuation of high-level exchanges between the two
countries that were resumed after a short break last month
with Special Representatives talks on boundary issue here.

Mr Krishna’s visit is aimed at preparing the ground for
the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao towards the end of
next month.

Mr Krishna will leave for Beijing tomorrow. He will meet his
counterpart Yang Jiechi in the capital, and also inaugurate the
new Chancery building.

SC stays CBI probe on Telangana scholar’s torture

New Delhi, February 07: : The Supreme Court on Monday stayed an Andhra Pradesh High Court direction for a CBI inquiry into alleged police torture of an university scholar in Telangana.

A bench of justices HL Dattu and CK Prasad stayed the inquiry on an appeal filed by the state government challenging the plea for a CBI probe into the alleged torture of Kakatiya University (KU) research scholar Vukanti Yakub Reddy.

The apex court, while staying the direction, sought a response of Reddy on the state’s appeal.

To ward off communal trouble cops remove flags in old city

Hyderabad, February 07: In view of the prevailing atmosphere in the city, police have initiated steps for the removal of flags and buntings put up across the city for Milad-un Nabi. While Sunday’s processions were largely peaceful, senior officers who monitored the police bandobust, felt that the religious fervour was noticeably high this year compared to previous years. Around 30,000 people participated in the 42 Milad processions organised in the South Zone, which was about 7,000 more than the previous year’s figure.

Hyderabad CBI officers bag merit awards

Hyderabad, February 07: Two Hyderabad zone CBI officials, R M Khan, additional SP, and Ch Somaiah, inspector, were honoured with merit certificates and cash rewards by CBI director AP Singh at a function in NewDelhi on Monday.

While Khan is the chief investigating officer of the OMC case, Somaiah is a key officer in Khan’s team that went to Bellary to nab mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and his associates. Of the 30 officers receiving awards, two are from Hyderabad.

US, Israel working in ‘lockstep’ on Iran: Obama

US President Barack Obama says he does not think Israel has decided whether to launch a military strike against Iran over its atomic activities.

“I don’t think that Israel has made a decision on what they need to do. I think they, like us, believe that Iran has to stand down on its nuclear program,” Obama said in an interview with NBC television network on Sunday.

He added that Israel and the United States would work “in lockstep” on Iran.
