Man charged with threatening to kill Obama

A 20-year-old man has been charged with threatening to assassinate US President Barrack Obama.

In a Feb 21 posting on Facebook under the name of “Jay Valor”, Joaquin Amador Serrapio required others’ help to assassinate Obama during the president’s Feb 23 visit to the University of Miami (UM).

Serrapio made another posting Feb 23, saying: “If anyone’s going to UM to see Obama today, get your phones out and record. Because at any moment I’m gonna put a bullet through his head and you don’t wanna miss that! Youtube!”

Saudi authorities planning to intensify Syria unrest

Informed sources in Syria said on Monday Saudi Arabia has reportedly invited Walid Jumblatt, the leader of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party, Samir Farid Geagea, a senior member of the Lebanese March 14 alliance, and former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

The Lebanese politicians will meet with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal and security officials in Riyadh later in February to discuss the possible ways of intensifying the months-long unrest in Syria, reports say.

Another rape in Bengal, this time the victim’s deaf and mute

In another incident of rape in West Bengal, a physically challenged woman was allegedly raped by a junior doctor in a government hospital in Bankura district, police said Wednesday.

“We have received a complaint that a deaf and mute woman was raped by a junior doctor of Bankura Sammilani Medical College. The victim was medical examined locally and we are taking her to Kolkata for another medical test,” Bankura Superintendent of Police Pranav Kumar said.

The clothes of the victim and the bedsheets have also been sent for examination.

Girl shot dead by father for ‘honour’

A 16-year-old girl in Haryana was killed and then hastily cremated Monday night by her father, police said and added they suspect it to be a case of ‘honour killing’.

The Class 10 student (name withheld) was shot dead from point blank range by her father, Ratan Pal, a retired Border Security Force (BSF) trooper, in Rewari Khera village of Bhiwani district.

Police said that the trooper was under the influence of liquor at the time of the shooting. He is missing and on the run since Monday night.

At 6.1%, GDP records lowest growth in two years

India’s economic growth rate slipped to 6.1 per cent in the third quarter this fiscal, lowest in more than two years due to poor performance of the manufacturing, mining and farm sectors.

The Gross Domestic Product growth the in third quarter (October-December) last fiscal was 8.3 per cent, as per the latest data released by the government on Wednesday.

GDP in April-December period also moderated to 6.9 per cent from 8.1 per cent in the first nine months of 2010-11.

Russian woman held for trying to sell son

A Russian woman has been arrested after she attempted to sell her five-year-old son for 300,000 rubles (around $10,000), officials said.

The woman from the far eastern Khabarovsk region was arrested Tuesday, the regional investigation committee said. Investigators said the woman asked for 800,000 rubles (around $27,500) for her son but the amount was reduced after negotiations with the buyer.

Israel vulnerable to Iran retaliatory attacks

Senior Israeli lawmaker Zeev Bielski says Tel Aviv’s defense capabilities do not rise high enough to protect Israel in case of a retaliatory attack by Iran.

Almost one in four Israelis lack access to bomb shelters, whether communal or reinforced rooms in private homes, Bielski told Reuters on Tuesday.

“Are we prepared for a war? No…Things are moving too slowly and we are wasting very precious time,” Bielski added.

Israel main loser in war against Iran

Iran’s defense minister says US warnings to Israel over a military strike against Iran show that Washington is aware that Tel Aviv would be the main loser.

“The US knows that if anyone comes to such a battlefield against Iran, undoubtedly it will get the most damage and it will be the main loser,” Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said.

General Vahidi said on Tuesday the Islamic Republic will give a crushing response to any aggressors.

He added that Iran has not revealed all its military capabilities, keeping some of them for emergency situations.

Iran might buy up to 3 million tons of wheat from India

India’s industry officials say Tehran might buy around 3 million tons of wheat from New Delhi through private deals valued at USD 750-900 million.

“The payments by Iran could be in rupees…It is being worked out,” The Wall Street Journal quoted an Indian industry official as saying, on condition of anonymity, on Tuesday.

Another official noted that a delegation consisting of representatives of Iran’s Central Bank is expected in New Delhi this week to discuss the deal and the payment mechanism.

Govt to auction 4G spectrum this year: Kapil Sibal

India is looking at holding spectrum auctions for the fourth generation (4G) mobile services by the end of this year, besides finalising plans to sell off radio waves for the 2G services, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal has said.

“By the end of the year, we are actually going to auction 4G (spectrum). That is what our intent is. We have enough spectrum now to share with everybody,” he said at the India Day function organised by his ministry at the Mobile World Congress here.

Thanks to a verdict by a Lok Adalat in Kerala, an elderly casual labourer and his wife have won the right to collect their deceased son’s semen from an infertility clinic and use it to have a surrogate child.

Ravi Kumar, 59, a casual labourer, and his 58-year-old wife Karthiyayani from Thrissur are overjoyed with the verdict. They have even found a woman who is willing to become a surrogate mother.

Major terror bid foiled 2 LeT men nabbed

In a major victory in the fight against terror, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police arrested two terrorist belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba from New Delhi railway station early Wednesday.

Intelligence agencies were trailing them for a while and that they had entered Delhi via Jharkhand. One of the two arrested is said to be a native of Jammu and Kashmir.

Islamabad: Pakistani army Tuesday denied whistleblowing website WikiLeaks cable’s allegation, suggesting Pakistan military and the main intelligence officials were aware of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad city.

The US military killed bin Laden May 2, 2011, leaving the Pakistan government embarrassed over his presence in the country, Xinhua reported.

According to a WikiLeaks report, officials of the Pakistan army and spy agency Inter-State Services (ISI) knew about bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad.

NRHM scam: UP health official found dead

The NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh has turned murkier with another health official found dead under mysterious circumstances, the fifth victim in the last one year after the alleged bungling of over Rs.10,000 crore of central funds surfaced.

UP police found the body of Mahendra Sharma, an accountant, lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries on his head and face, from the Pasgawan health centre area in Lakhimpur Kheri district last evening.

52-year-old Sharma has been reported missing since February 7, police said.

89 pregnant women found HIV+ in Jeddah campaign

A total of 89 pregnant women were found to be HIV positive by the campaign, Babies Without AIDS, held at Jeddah malls last week, it was reported in sections of the Arabic press on Tuesday.

The women were all given the necessary treatment, said Dr. Nazar Bahbri, Chairman of the Microbiology and Epidemic Society in the Western Region.

Bahbri, who is an internal medicine consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, urged the Ministry of Health to make it mandatory for all pregnant women in the Kingdom to undergo tests for HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS.
