Patna SP gets a slap for beating woman

A senior lady officer of Patna was caught on camera beating a woman protester in public while the locals were protesting electrocution of two youth in the city’s Kankarbagh area on Monday evening.

The drama began after the death of two young men which triggered a traffic jam in the area caused by the agitated locals leading to the police action. The protesters alleged that the policemen who reached the spot initially were drunk and they pelted stones on them.

No proof of allegations against Ramdev: Police

Baba Ramdev did not promote enmity between religious groups at a press conference here in January or provoke his supporters to assault a man who allegedly poured black ink on the yoga guru at the event, Delhi Police told a court here.

Quran burning: US apology fails to ease anger in Afghanistan

Four people were shot dead and dozens wounded in protests in Afghanistan which flared for a second day on Wednesday in several cities over the burning of copies of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, at NATO’s main base in the country.

The American Embassy said its staff were in “lockdown” and travel had been suspended as thousands of people expressed fury over the burning, a public relations disaster for US-led NATO forces fighting Taliban militants ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

Former Himachal BJP chief to become minister

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal Wednesday announced that he would expand his cabinet by inducting former state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Khimi Ram into the ministry.

Dhumal told reporters in his home constituency Hamirpur that Ram will be sworn in Thursday in Shimla.

Party insiders said Dhumal, who has not appointed a forest minister after J.P. Nadda’s elevation as party’s national general secretary in 2010, might allocate forest portfolio to Ram, a close confidant of Dhumal.

5 killed, 8 injured as auto hits van

Five persons, including three women were killed and eight injured, two of them seriously, when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided head-on with a goods van at Nyalkal mandal in the district early today. According to police here, the ill-fated autorickshaw, carrying 13 people, was proceeding to Mamidigi from Zahirabad was hit by a goods van coming in opposite direction on Zahirabad-Bidar National Highway in Nyalkal mandal, resulting in the mishap. The deceased were identified as K Raju (28), Seemoon (28), Bathamma (45), Lashmamma (50) and Ratnamma (55).

No chance to accept Saif’s apology: Iqbal Sharma

Iqbal Meer Sharma, who is Deputy Director General in Trade Promotion Board of South Africa, has accused actor Saif Ali Khan of physically assaulting him and his father-in-law at the Wasabi restaurant in Taj on Tuesday night.

Narrating the entire incident, Sharma alleged that Saif’s group was the disturbing lot at the restaurant and despite requesting them to keep the volume low they in turn resorted to violence.

CM, Naidu in heated exchanges in Assembly

Coming under attack on reported move to curb the powers of Election Commission, Congress on Wednesday said the party never attempted directly or indirectly to bring disrepute or challenge the poll body’s authority.

Congress says opposition playing politics with NCTC

The Congress Wednesday accused the opposition of finding fault with the proposed anti-terror hub for “political considerations” even after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured seven chief ministers that their concerns will be addressed.

“The opposition is attacking the (National Counter-Terrorism Centre) NCTC due to political considerations,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.

He charged the opposition is raising the bogey that “federalism is in danger” without “caring for the context”.

Two Bengal CPI-M leaders killed, Left blames Trinamool

Two Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders, including a former legislator, were killed in a clash in West Bengal’s Burdwan district Wednesday in an incident that the opposition Left Front blamed on the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Pradip Tah, who earlier represented Burdwan North in the assembly, and the party’s district committee member Kamal Gayen were lynched in the clash in Dewandighi.

“Two people were injured,” said Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Gangeshwar Singh. “There is a lot of tension in the area,” he said.

Woman jailed for killing boyfriend

A young businesswoman who killed her boyfriend in a villa in Jumeirah in 2010 has been jailed for seven years after she was diagnosed with psychological disorder, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance ruled on Tuesday.

The forensic report submitted before the court said that she suffered disorder after being raped in early age and that her mother mistreated her.

The court on Tuesday awarded a Kazakhstani businesswoman seven years jail followed by deportation for killing her boyfriend.

US-led airstrikes hit girls school, injure 11 in Afghanistan

That US-led NATO helicopters carried out the aerial attacks against the girls religious school in Nangarhar province on Wednesday as the students were studying.

NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the attack, saying it has launched an investigation into the air raids.

On February 8, US-led airstrikes killed eight Afghan children in the Nejrab district of Kapisa province as the victims were herding sheep in heavy snow.

Saif Ali Khan may be arrested in assault case

(Reuters) – Actor Saif Ali Khan has been accused of assaulting a fellow diner at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai and might be arrested, police said on Wednesday.

“Khan has been charged with assault and participating in assault, as there were two or three others involved,” an official in the Mumbai police press room said. “We are investigating.”

Khan, 41, was dining with girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and friends at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel on Tuesday night when he got into an argument with complainant Iqbal Sharma.
