Wakf Board constitutes managing committees

A meeting of the A.P. State Wakf Board was held under the chairmanship of Maulana Syed Ghulam Afzal. In the board meeting held on 18th Feb. after passing the resolution to seize properties held by Qadiyanis, other items of the agenda could be taken up for discussion. In order to complete the remaining items of the agenda the meeting was convened yesterday.

The board constituted 26 managing committees and nominated 10 various wakf institutions. Nine new properties were entered in Wakf Book. Construction work on two Wakf properties were sanctioned.

Review of the cases of Muslim youths by Home Minister

Home Minister Ms. Sabitha Indira Reddy along with the higher police officials reviewed the cases booked against the students who participated in the Telangana movement and cases of Muslim youths of the old city of Hyderabad.

Last week, speaker of the Assembly, Mr. N. Manohar had instructed the Home Minister to convene a review meeting and consider the cases against the Muslim youths.

Clarke misses out due to back injury

Captain Michael Clarke withdrew from Australian team for the tri-series one-dayer against India with a back problem, Cricket Australia said.

Clarke, who was troubled by the back complaint in Friday’s three-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in Hobart, was replaced by Shane Watson.

Watson was playing in his first match on Sunday after an injury-marred season.

“Michael’s back was sore in Hobart and with the short turnaround between games we have taken the precaution of him not playing in today’s game,” Australia team physio Alex Kountouris said.

Tendulkar still the key wicket for Aus

Australia’s Michael Hussey dreads hearing calls for Sachin Tedulkar’s retirement, fearing that the criticism may just fire up the Indian for a better performance.

Former India skipper Kapil Dev had recently said that Tendulkar should have retired after the winning the World Cup.

However, Hussey feels that despite Tendulkar’s ordinary form in the ongoing tri-series, it his wicket that Australian cherishes the most.

Two LeT militants killed in shootout

Two LeT militants were killed by security forces in a shootout in the mountainous district Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday morning, an official said.

The Army and police launched a joint operation in Banzwar area, about 220 km northeast of Jammu Sunday morning, an official in Kishtwar district said.

“The contact with militants was established about two hours after encircling the hideout leading to exchange of fire,” the official said.

The militants, Mohammad Rafi and Shahnawaz Khandey, belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit, the official said.

2014 would be year of change: Anna Hazare

Social activist and anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Saturday said that 2014 would be “the year of change”.

Inaugurating the ‘National Youth Integration Camp’ organised by Snehalaya and National Youth Project, Hazare said, “Mentality of the Indian youth is changing rapidly, and the year 2014 would be the year of change. If the youth resolve, they can change the system.”

Gujarati actress Dimpi commits suicide

Dimple Hingu, Gujarati actress allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, said police on Saturday.

The actress was 24-year-old.

“Dimple had yesterday evening left her house in Varachcha area and was later found near it in not so stable condition by someone known to her,” they said.

“She was admitted to a private hospital where it was discovered that she had consumed poison,” police said.

The motive behind what led the actress to take such step is not yet known, said police.

Sit-in against Pakistan drone strikes

Hundreds of Pakistanis who live near the Afghan border have launched a two-day sit-in here against US drone strikes in the country’s tribal areas.

The protesters have come from North Waziristan and are camping near the presidency and parliament house to convey their grievances to the US and the Pakistani governments.

The drone strikes targeted Al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan.

“I have filed a police case in Islamabad against the American officials for killing my son,” Karim Khan, one of the participants who lost his son in a drone strike, said.

Pakistan won’t extend ISI chief’s term

The Pakistani government has decided not to extend the tenure of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, a media report said.

Pasha, who has been the director general of the ISI for the last three-and-a-half years, will be transferred to the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) as its head, the daily Dawn reported citing sources late Saturday.

He was handed a one-year extension as chief of the country’s spy agency last March.

The government has not commented on the matter.

A source close to Pasha also said the ISI chief did not want an extension.

Don’t get offended by ‘sexy’, says chief of National Commission for Women

In a bizarre comment, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Mamta Sharma has claimed that the word ‘sexy’ should not be considered offensive.

She says the word actually means ‘beautiful and charming’ and it should not be taken in a negative sense.

However, her argument has angered the BJP and women’s groups who say that the NCW Chief’s remark is shocking and demoralising for women.

The BJP’s Women’s Wing in Rajasthan has asked the NCW Chief to resign.

Most US Muslims back Ground Zero mosque

Most Muslim Americans support the proposal to build a mosque and Islamic community centre near Ground Zero, the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York, a survey shows.

The Pew Research Center survey found 81 percent of US Muslims have heard about the project, which is strongly opposed by American conservatives, and, of those, 72 percent say it should be allowed to be built.

Demolish “MANNAT ” petition in SC

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court against Bollywood Badshah, Shahrukh Khan’s bunglow Mannat over the alleged violation of archaeological laws and coastal regulation zone in the construction of the bunglow.

Amit Maruand and Simpreet Singh from Mumbai approached the apex court after the Bombay High Court’s order dismissed the duo’s petition against Khan.

The PIL filed by Maruand and Singh was dismissed by the high court on Jan 28, that also imposed a petition of Rs 20,000 on the duo, saying that it was a “publicity petition”.

Strong earthquake jolts southern Taiwan

Taipei, February 26: A strong earthquake has struck southern Taiwan, causing minor property damage in a mountainous area near the coastal city of Pingtung.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau says the quake struck at 10:35 am (0235 GMT) Sunday, about 19 miles (30 kilometres) from Pingtung. It says the quake had a magnitude of 6.1.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.9.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

A British court has convicted an Indian origin medical student and two men in the murder of a 21-year-old NRI TV executive in south-east London last year. Prosecutors said Gagandip Singh was brutally beaten up and left to die in the boot of a burning car.

Gagandip’s killers had decided to “play God” after the victim allegedly tried to rape medical student Mundill Mahil, 20, six months before he died, the judge said.

For the sake of power, BJP lives with indiscipline

Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani had once famously warned his party against “Congressisation”. By that he meant being self-serving, undisciplined and hankering for power, traits for which the Congress has been slammed for years.

Govt doctor arrested for accepting bribe

Bhopal, February 26: The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta police caught a senior government doctor red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs.5000 to treat a cancer patient on Saturday here.

The Special Police Establishment (SPE) of the State Lokayukta arrested Dr. S.K.Pippal, head of department of the ENT unit at the government-run Hamidia hospital, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5000 from the brother of an oral-cancer patient.

The State department of medical education will reportedly be initiating proceedings for the doctor’s suspension.

NCW chief terms ‘sexy’ as beautiful, invites wrath

NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma on Saturday said the word ‘sexy’ should not be taken in a negative context as it means ‘beautiful and charming’, but her argument did not go down well with the BJP and women’s organisations which termed her remark as shocking and demoralising for women.

Speaking at a function, Mamta said that the word meant ‘beautiful’ and ‘charming’ so it should not be taken in negative sense because problems start when we treat it as negative.

Give 18 pc quota for Muslims: SP to Congress

A desperate Samajwadi Party is trying to shore up its Muslim support in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav says he’s ready to join hands with the Congress, if the latter agrees to give 18 per cent reservation to Muslims.

Muslim votes will play a crucial role in the last two phases of Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh.

SP earlier claimed that they would win 40 of the 55 Uttar Pradesh Assembly constituencies that went to polls in the first phase.
