Official, six policemen injured in Rajasthan communal clash

An official and six policemen were injured in a communal clash in this Rajasthan district Sunday, police said.

The situation remained tense as police twice baton-charged a crowd of people from two communities clashing with each other.

According to police, the incident took place in Mavli town in Udaipur district, some 400 km fromJaipur.

“A minor tiff took place between a mobile shop owner and two youths, who were participating in a function of a particular community at a nearby school,” said a police officer.

Three soldiers killed in Pakistan

A Pakistani soldier was killed Sunday in a clash with militants while two security personnel died in a remote-controlled blast in the country’s northwest tribal region, a media report said.

The two incidents took place in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Xinhua reported citing Urdu TV channel Dunya.

Army sources said one soldier was killed and several others were injured during a search operation in Sarakai area of the district.

The attack was followed by a remote-controlled blast in Sararogha area, in which two soldiers were killed and many others wounded.

5 killed in AP mishaps

Five persons, including a mother and her 9-month-old daughter, were killed and six injured in two road accidents in Andhra Pradesh today. At Ranga Reddy district, a 28-year-old woman and her daughter were killed and her brother seriously injured when a two-wheeler in which they were travelling was hit by a lorry at Kesara Mandal in the district. The mishap occurred at Rampalli-Cheralpalli Road when they are proceeding to Yadagirigutta from Cherlapalli. The deceased were identified as Hemalatha and her daughter Archana, according to police.

Woman arrested for providing surety on fake documents

A 30-year-old woman who provided surety on fake documents to criminals on on directions from her boss operating from inside Tihar jail has been arrested here, police said Sunday.

Niramala Devi alias Kanta alias Salma was involved in more than 100 cases and was arrested Saturday on a tip off from outside the Saket Court Complex where she was meeting a client.

Three Gas pipelines explode in southwestern Pakistan

Local officials say the explosions took place in Pirkoh area of the Dera Bugti district early Sunday morning, halting the supply to the region’s purification units.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for further investigation.

A security guard was also injured in a separate attack against a gas supply unit in Dera Bugati’s Sui area carried out by armed militants.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the explosions, authorities say Separatist Baloch groups carried out the attack.

Iran refuses to deliver 500k-barrel oil shipment to Greece

Oil tankers that had come to transfer 500,000 barrels of Iranian crude oil to Hellenic refining complex in Greece were forced to return empty-handed after the Islamic Republic refused to deliver the shipment.

European Union foreign ministers agreed on January 23 to ban oil imports from Iran and to freeze the assets of the Iranian Central Bank across the EU. The sanctions will become fully effective on July 1, 2012, to give EU member states enough time to adjust to the new conditions and find alternative crude oil supplies.

NATO airstrike kills three Afghan civilians

The airstrike targeted Kapisa’s Tagab district, leaving another four people injured.

The attack comes less than two weeks after another US-led strike killed eight Afghan civilians in the same province. The victims were reportedly bombed twice while herding sheep in the snow.

Afghans have been holding almost six consecutive days of rallies against US-led forces in Afghanistan and the recent desecration of the holy Quran by US troops.

Tension after petrol bomb attacks

Tension prevailed in Meghalayas Ri-Bhoi district Sunday following petrol bomb attacks that damaged property owned by several individuals.

A total of 112 people were displaced after unidentified miscreants hurled the bombs, damaging 15 shops-cum-residences and five motorcycles at Rajabagan in the district bordering Assam, officials said.

There is still tension but the situation is under control and necessary steps have been taken to restore normalcy, said Akash Deep, the deputy commissioner of Ri-Bhoi.

Nine injured in police-villagers clash in central Assam

At least nine people, including four policemen, were injured in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district Sunday after a clash between police and villagers.

“We had detained three people from a village near the Deothar police station on Saturday night regarding a case registered at the police station. However, they were released Sunday morning,” police said adding that after their release, they went back to the village and came back with more men to attack the police station.

Delhi HC blast: Indian Mujahideen suspected to be behind attack

Banned Indian Mujahideen terror outfit is suspected to be behind the low intensity blast outside the Delhi High Court in May last year.

The NIA, which took over the probe in December last year after the Special Cell of Delhi Police failed to make any headway, has got some leads to suggest that the blast on May 25 last year was a handiwork of the banned terror outfit, official sources said.

The investigations into this blast had virtually slipped into the background after the High Court premises were rocked on September seven by an explosion that left 15 people dead.

Ramdev may appeal against apex court

Baba Ramdev is considering an appeal against the Supreme Court judgement that blamed him too for the violent crackdown on his supporters in Delhi’s Ramlila ground last year.

Speaking to reporters Sunday at the end of a day-long fast in protest against corruption, black money and illegal mining, Ramdev said he was set to launch a decisive campaign against corruption in March.

“The court was given edited CCTV footage by police which had misguided the Supreme Court… My legal experts are considering an appeal against the verdict,” Ramdev said.

‘Separated wife entitled to maintenance as per husband’s financial status’

The Delhi High Court has ruled that a wife, though separated, is entitled to maintenance depending on her husband’s financial position.

“A life on alimony is not to be a life different from what the wife would have led if the relationship had not gone sour. The quantum of maintenance inter alia depends upon the status of the husband,” a division bench of acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw said.

It rejected the argument that if a husband provides food and shelter after a separation, he owes nothing more to his wife.

7 of family killed in mishap

Seven members of a family were killed on the spot in a car-lorry smash at Alangudi Village in the southern Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu, today. Reports received here said the victims were on a pilgrimage to Tiruvannamalai from Tenkasi when the mishap occurred. While seven people, who were travelling in a hired van, were killed on the spot, one person sustained injuries and was admitted to a hospital. The deceased included four women, two men and a boy. Senior police officials rushed to the spot.

ACTOR Saif Ali Khan’s controversial rumpus with South African national Iqbal Sharma at Mumbai’s prestigious Taj Mahal hotel is far from over.

After Khan filed a countercomplaint against Sharma for administering the alleged “ first blow”, the actor is in trouble again. A manager of the Wasabi restaurant, where the incident occurred, has claimed it was in fact Khan who provoked Sharma and landed the first punch.

The manager of the restaurant, who was an eye- witness to the incident, has told the police Khan was indeed the first one to hit in the fight.
