Seminary asks Muslims to avoid ostentation on Milad

Hyderabad, February 04: A leading Islamic seminary in Hyderabad has issued a fatwa asking Muslims to desist from un-Islamic practices like playing music, singing and dancing on Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The Jamia Nizamia has asked community members to avoid excess revelry and ostentatious expenditure during Milad, which falls Feb 5. It has advised people not to put up flags with the names of Allah and the Prophet Moahmmed written on them as the flags may fall down, which will amount to showing disrespect.

IM operative linked to Jama Masjid blast nabbed: Police

New Delhi, February 04: A suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist believed to be involved in the Jama Masjid blast was arrested in Bihar, police said Friday.

“The suspected terrorist is identified as Mohammed Tariq (35). He was arrested from Nalanda in Bihar,” police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said: “Tariq is co-founder of IM. He joined SIMI in 1998 and is an engineering student.”

The suspected terrorist was arrested by special investigation team (SIT) of Delhi Police.

Monkeys in Kazakh zoo get wine to keep warm

Astana, February 04: Monkeys in a Kazakhstan zoo are enjoying a “very human” remedy against cold weather, with wine added to their daily ration.

Each monkey is getting a moderate dose of about 50 grams of Cahors wine a day, mixed with piping hot water and served with apples, lemon and sugar, the Tengrinews.kz website reported.

The monkeys enjoy their drink, said Svetlana Pilyuk, deputy director of the zoo in Karaganda city, around 190 km from Kazakh capital Astana.

Hyderabad, February 04: A software engineer of a multi-national company ( MNC) in Bangalore was arrested on Friday by Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials for allegedly uploading his ex-colleague’s obscene photographs, which he forcibly took, in social networking sites.

According to the CID sleuths, 27-year-old T Satish was arrested from Bangalore, where he is presently working. The victim, also a software engineer, lodged a complaint with the CID in January alleging that Satish, who was her former colleague, befriended her at one point of time.

Micron CEO dies in plane crash

Idaho, February 04: The head of memory chip maker Micron, long known for taking risks in stunt piloting, died Friday when a small experimental plane he was piloting steeply banked, stalled and crashed near an Idaho runway.

Steve Appleton, who survived a similar crash eight years ago and had a reputation as a hard-driving daredevil, was the only person aboard the plane when witnesses said it crashed shortly after its second take-off attempt in Boise, according to safety investigators.

Mumbai, February 04: Criticising Congress president Sonia Gandhi for being “quiet” on the 2G spectrum scam, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray on Friday hit out at Home Minister P Chidambaram, saying he should resign immediately.

Kolkata, February 04: Magsaysay Award winner Mahasweta Devi said here on Friday that not allowing controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen’s book to be released at the scheduled venue at the 36 Kolkata International Book Fair was a “grave injustice.”

“For a long time I have seen that Taslima writes a book and then faces protests…. Taslima Nasreen does not do anything more than write books,” Mahasweta Devi said, adding there was a need for public opinion to be mobilised against these incidents.

New Delhi, February 04: A special CBI court on Saturday will decide on the alleged role of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G scam on a petitioner’s plea seeking to make him an accused in the case.

The petitioner alleged that Chidambaram was equally culpable like former Telecom Minister A Raja as he also had a role in deciding the spectrum pricing and allowing telecom companies to off-load shares to foreign firms.

With the Supreme Court leaving the issue to be decided by the trial court, the ball is now in the court of Special CBI Judge OP Saini.

19 babies die in Malda, Bankura

Malda, February 04: Infant deaths have returned to haunt West Bengal with 19 babies dying in Bankura and Malda districts in the last two days.

Ten babies died at the Bankura Sammilani Medical College while nine died at the Malda Medical College and Hospital, officials said today.

Superintendent of Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital Dr P Kundu said while four children died on Wednesday, six babies expired yesterday.

The deaths were due to meningitis, pneumonia and low birth weight, Dr Kundu said.

Air India pilot suspended after he showed up drunk for work

New Delhi, February 03: An Air India pilot, who is also a Flight Operations Inspector with civil aviation regulator DGCA, has been suspended from active duty after he tested positive for alcohol.

“Captain Sebastian, who was to fly between Chennai to Madurai, has been grounded for three months after he was tested positive for the alcohol during a pre-flight breathalyser test, a mandatory exercise to ensure flight safety,” a senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official said.

Army chief vs Govt begins in Supreme Court, this round to the General

New Delhi, February 03: The chief of the Indian Army, General V K Singh, won the first round of his legal battle against the government in the Supreme Court today. The judges said that the process used by the government to reject his claim that he was born in 1951 and not 1950 is defective or “vitiated”.

The government has been told to either withdraw that decision, taken on December 30, or have it officially over-ruled by the court. The next hearing has been scheduled for February 10.
