Zardari remits sentences of prisoners

Islamabad, February 04: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has remitted the sentences of prisoners as a goodwill gesture on the occasion of Eid.

Zardari consulted with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for remitting the sentences on the occassion of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi Friday, Geo TV reported.

The reduction of sentences ranges from 45 days to total remission in different categories. Prisoners convicted for life in prison, except those convicted for murder, espionage and anti-state activities, will see their sentences reduced by 90 days.

Congress leader’s email hacked

Panaji, February 04: Unknown persons have hacked into the email account of a Goa Congress leader Vijay Sardesai, who is seeking to contest the hotly contested assembly seat of Fatorda, 40 km from here.

Police said the influential but controversial politician had stated that the IP address from which the email account vijaysardesai4fatorda@gmail.com was hacked originated in Honduras and Thailand.

“The hacking occurred between Jan 28 and 30. And the hackers sent across a lot of email saying untoward things from the email address,” a police official said.

Two LeT guerrillas killed in Kashmir

Srinagar, February 04: Two separatist guerrillas of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, army sources said.

“On specific information about the presence of some terrorists, troops of the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and police surrounded a house in Dura (Litter) village of Pulwama district late Friday,” Lieutenant Colonel J.S. Brar, spokesman of the army’s Srinagar based 15th corps, told reporter.

Man booked for kidney sale advertisement

Chandigarh, February 04: Punjab Police have booked a man who had offered to sell his kidney through a newspaper advertisement last year.

Police in Patiala, 80 km from here, said Friday that a case had been registered against Karnail Singh of Khera Jattan village in Patiala district.

He had given an advertisement in a vernacular newspaper last year offering to sell his kidney for money.

Fresh snowfall blocks Srinagar-Jammu highway

Srinagar, February 04: Jammu highway and an avalanche warning has been issued for people living in the higher reaches, an official said.

“Fresh heavy snowfall started in the Bannihal sector of the Srinagar-Jammu highway during the night and is still continuing. The highway has been closed for traffic and people intending to undertake travel on the highway must contact the traffic control room before moving on the road,” an official of the traffic department said here.

Moderate intensity quake in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, February 04: A moderate intensity earthquake rocked the Kashmir Valley Saturday morning, disaster management officials said. No damage to life or property has been reported so far.

“The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.7 on the Richter Scale. It occured at 5.02 a.m. Saturday morning,” Aamir Ali, in-charge of the provincial disaster management cell, told IANS.

“The epicentre of the quake was in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan. The coordinates were 36.4 degrees north and 71.4 degrees east.”

Man kills relative over ‘unpregnant’ camel

Dubai, February 04: A Sudanese shepherd murdered his cousin in Dubai after finding out that one of the female camels sold to him was not pregnant.

The 24-year-old man told court that he stabbed his cousin in self defence after his “fat” relative pushed him down to the ground following the camel dispute.

‘Facebook’ human trade ring busted in Dubai

Abu Dhabi, February 04: Dubai’s police busted a human trade ring involving an Arab man who brought three Latin American girls to the emirate through Facebook and forced them to practice prostitution in the first vice case involving a social networking site.

Units from the anti-organise crime division stormed an apartment in the emirate and seized the man and he three girls, who all confessed to the crime.

The girls told police they knew the man through Facebook and that he misled them into believing he wants to be their friends and would find jobs for them in Dubai.

Trial court to decide on Chidambaram’s role in afternoon

New Delhi, February 04: A trial court here Saturday deferred Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy’s plea to make union Home Minister P. Chidambaram a co-accused in the 2G spectrum allotment case till 12.15 p.m.

“The matter has been deferred till 12.15 p.m.,” special CBI judge O.P. Saini said.

Swamy had filed a plea seeking direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the role of Chidambaram in fixing 2G licence prices and grant of spectrum.

Ties with India, China not zero-sum game: US

Washington, February 04: Seeking strong ties with both India and China, the US has said that its relations with the two Asian giants are not a zero-sum game.

“We have a strong bilateral relationship with India. The United States is in the midst of our Asia pivot, we are strengthening our interactions with Asian nations, especially with emerging powers like India and China,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Man arrested for traveling on fake passport

Hyderabad, February 4 (Siast News): Rizwan Ahmed, 28, native of U.P, had gone to Saudi Arabia in 2001 and came back to India on emergency certificate in 2011.

He got his passport renewed and again went to Saudi Arabia. However, when this time he asked about his passport from his employer, he flatly refused to do so.

A disappointed Rizwan then contacted an agent Babu Khan and paid him 600 riyals to get another passport. The agent gave him a passport in the name of Rehan Khan.

CBI court adjourns hearing till Feb 29

New Delhi, February 04: The special CBI court in Ghaziabad on Saturday adjourned the hearing in the Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case till February 29, in which her parents Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar are facing trial as per Supreme Court’s order.

In a breather to dentist Rajesh Talwar, the Supreme Court on Monday directed that he will remain on bail and not be arrested till February 4 when he will appear before the Ghaziabad court to face trial along with his wife, Nupur.

CBI court to pronounce order on Swamy’s plea at 12.30 p.m.

New Delhi, February 04: The CBI special court on Saturday deferred till 12:30 p.m. the pronouncement of its order on Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy’s plea to prosecute Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G case.

At 10 a.m. Special CBI Judge allowed only Dr. Swamy to enter inside the court room and conveyed to him asked him to come before 12:30 p.m.

“I have been asked to be present in the court before 12:30 p.m. I can say that I am confident that the judgement will be delivered today,” Dr. Swamy told reporters coming out of the court.

Jeddah, February 04: A renowned environment sciences expert has blamed Saudi nationals for polluting the Red Sea. “This is an indisputable fact,” Dr. Ali Eshki, Professor of Environment Sciences at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz University, said.

Saudi citizens should be held accountable for the destruction of marine life in the Red Sea, he said and pointed out that when municipality workers started digging the Jeddah Corniche toward the end of the 70s, they did not take into account the great damage they were doing to the marine life, especially the coral reefs.

Online jobs in UAE up 36%

Dubai, February 04: Online job opportunities in the UAE saw a 36 per cent jump from December 2010, according to the latest Monster Employment Index.

This year-over-year growth (from December 2010 to December 2011) was robust and online recruitment activity in the country edged up four per cent between November and December last year.

Confident 2G judgment will be out Saturday: Swamy

New Delhi, February 04: Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy said he was confident that judgement would be delivered later Saturday after a trial court deferred his plea on the alleged role of Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum case till 12.15 p.m.

“I am confident that the judgment will be delivered today. I can sense the ambience inside the court,” Swamy told a news channel.

Swamy had filed a plea seeking direction to the CBI to probe the role of Chidambaram, the then finance minister, in fixing 2G licence prices and the grant of spectrum.
