Kuwait teacher raped school boy, held

Kuwait City, January 24: Kuwaiti police arrested a teacher for raping a school boy many times before the crime was discovered by the boy’s father.

The sports teacher at a school in Kuwait City confessed that he had a relationship with the boy for a while before the student told his father under pressure, the Arabic language daily Alwatan said.

“The teacher said the affair started when the teacher lured the boy into a room at the school to do massage for him,” the paper said.

Lokayukta probe: SM Krishna moves SC

New Delhi, January 24: External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court against Karnataka High Court’s order refusing to stall the Lokayukta police’s probe against him.

The Lokayukta police is probing charges that he dereserved forest areas in ecologically fragile zones during his tenure as chief minister during 1999 and 2004.

The court had, however, quashed charges of mismanagement of state-owned Mysore Minerals Ltd (MML) against him. MML is the nodal agency of the state for supply of iron ore to various firms, thereby causing loss to the firm.

Iraq twin car bombs kill 10, injure 38

Baghdad, January 23: At least ten people have been killed and 38 others injured in twin car bomb attacks in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, as the violence gets momentum in the volatile country.

The first bomb targeted a group of workers waiting for jobs early Tuesday morning while the second went off near a traffic intersection and outside a bakery half an hour later, both in the northeastern Sadr City area of Baghdad, an Iraqi interior ministry official said.

A total of ten people were killed and 38 more, including two women and a child, were injured in the assaults, he added.

Five Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza

Gaza, January The Israeli air force claimed that its warplanes targeted “an arms factory” in the center of the Palestinian territory and also three tunnels allegedly used for smuggling contraband.

Israel regularly targets the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring Palestinians. Most of the victims are women and children.

The Palestinians of the Gaza Strip are living in what is called the “world’s largest open-air prison” as Israel retains full control of the airspace, territorial waters, and border crossings of the territory.

One killed in school attack in Pakistan

Islamabad, January 24: Unknown militants have attacked a state-run school in Khyber Agency in northwest Pakistan, killing a security guard and injuring two others.

Officials told Press TV that the militants also detonated a bomb inside the building of the state primary school in Sheikh Mal Khei area of the tribal region early on Tuesday.

The school building was completely destroyed over the blast, they said. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sharia is good for women, claims Muslim lawyer

London, January 24: “Sharia law itself is inherently positive towards women”, the head of a law firm’s new Sharia division has claimed.

The comment coincides with a Bill before Parliament which seeks to tackle the discrimination suffered by women under Sharia law in England and Wales.

The Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill would remove any doubt that sex discrimination law applies to arbitration services.

Ponting achieves 13,000-run in test

Adelaide, January 24: Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting today became only the third batsman in the history of Test cricket to score 13,000 or more runs during his century knock against India in the fourth and final Test on Tuesday.
Ponting continues to be the third highest run-scorer in Test cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar (15432) and Rahul Dravid (13039).

Obama faces flak over failure to shut Guantanamo

United Nations, January 24: The UN human rights watchdog on Tuesday expressed “deep disappointment” that the Obama administration has not lived up to its promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, where individuals continue to be detained “indefinitely” in clear breach of international law.

Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said with its failure to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, the US government has “entrenched a system of arbitrary detention.”

US targets Iran’s third largest bank

Washington, January 24: The US Monday added Bank Tejarat, Iran’s third largest bank, on its blacklist for sanctions, citing its links to the Islamic republic’s nuclear bomb efforts.

The Department of Treasury alleged that the bank provides financial services to several Iranian banks and firms already put under international sanctions for their involvement in Iran’s weapons of mass destruction proliferation activities, reported Xinhua.

Chandigarh, January 24: Leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said author Salman Rushdie should have been allowed to come to India and given police protection.

“He came to India during the Vajpayee government… Obviously, he should have been allowed,” Jaitley, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, told reporters in Chandigarh referring to Rushdie calling off his visit to the Jaipur Literature Festival due to security fears.

Female student raped in public transport van

Jakarta, January 24: A young female student on her way to home was gang-raped by six men while she was travelling in a public transport van in Jakarta, media reports said.

Asia One News reported that first she was hit on the back of her head which made her unconscious and then the men raped her.

After the rape, they dumped her near a railroad track in an unconscious condition.

The victim’s friend told Kompas.com that after she awakened, she was shocked to discover what had happened to her.

BSF officer killed, 6 missing after J&K avalanche

Srinagar, January 24: A BSF officer was killed while six other security personnel went missing after being hit by an avalanche near the LoC in Kupwara district on Tuesday.

Sub-Inspector Narendra Kumar died while five Armymen and a BSF constable were missing after the avalanche struck this morning, a BSF spokesman said.

“A snow avalanche struck Furkian top in Kupwara at 7.20 am. Five Armymen and two BSF jawans were hit by the avalanche,” Defence Spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar said.

IAEA to visit Iran as EU slaps oil imports ban

London, January 24: The UN’s nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has said it was sending a team to Iran between Jan 29 and 31 “to resolve all outstanding substantive issues” as the European Union (EU) slapped an oil embargo on Tehran over its nuclear programme, BBC reported.

The IAEA, in November last year, said in a report that it had information suggesting Iran had carried out tests “relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device”, sparking the decision by the US and EU to issue tougher sanctions.

Fresh blasts, gunfire heard in Nigeria’s Kano

Kano, January 24: Explosions and gunfire were heard early Tuesday coming from an area near a police station in the Nigerian city of Kano, where coordinated attacks and gun battles last week killed at least 185 people.
