Mubarak’s wife asks UK Queen for help

London, January 27: Wife of the former Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak has asked the British Queen to help with the hospitalization of Mubarak in Britain, which is proved to be a safe haven for world criminals.

According to an Iraqi news agency, Nakhelnews, Suzanne Mubarak sent a letter to Queen Elizabeth demanding to create a situation through which ousted Egyptian president could be taken into hospitals in London for treatment.

German priest jailed over sex abuse

Berlin, January 27: A German court has convicted a Catholic priest of 250 counts of sexual abuse involving three boys over the period of several years and sentenced him to six years in prison.

The state court in Braunschweig on Thursday found the priest guilty of abusing the boys, aged 9 to 15, between 2004 and 2011.

The 46-year-old man, whose name was not revealed, told the court he abused the children during youth camps.

“He exploited the trust of their parents,” said Judge Manfred Teiwes as he passed the sentence.

UAE minister gets lifetime achievement award in US

Washington, January 26: The UAE’s Minister for Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al-Qassimi was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Arab American Chamber of Commerce (AACC) in Washington.

The award has been given in recognition of Al-Qassimi’s initiatives and efforts to promote Arab-American relations and the US-UAE relations in particular.

The award ceremony was attended by AACC president and CEO David Hammoud and 250 business leaders, government officials and ambassadors of Arab countries to the US.

Kerala governor Farook dies in Chennai hospital

Chennai/Thiruvananthapuram, January 26: Kerala Governor M.O.H. Farook Thursday died in a private hospital in Chennai due to multiple myeloma – a cancer of plasma cells – at the age of 75, officials said. A seven-day state mourning has been declared in Kerala.

Farook was recently granted leave to go for medical treatment to Chennai.

“He was admitted for multiple myeloma at Apollo Hospital in Teynampet (cancer speciality hospital). The end came today (Thursday) at 9.20 p.m.,” an Apollo official told IANS.

Long working hours could cause depression

London, January 26: Workers spending long hours in office are more than twice likely to develop depression than those who do a standard day, with the most susceptible being women, youngsters and the ones drawing low pay with moderate alcohol consumption, says a British study.

Researchers found those who spend more than 11 hours a day — or 55 hours a week — at their desk faced a higher risk. The most susceptible were women, younger people and those on a low pay grade with moderate alcohol consumption, the Daily Mail reported.

Davos, January 26: Ahead of a court hearing, technology giant Google facing controversy in India allegedly for hosting obscene and objectionable content on Thursday made it clear that it is not possible for the company to monitor everything on its website.

Google and Facebook are among 21 companies whose executives have been summoned to appear in person in a lower court in Delhi on March 13 for allegedly hosting obscene and objectionable content.

London, January 26: (IANS) The number of house-husbands and women turning the main breadwinner of families is on the rise in Britain, a new study says.

It says that the number of house-husbands in Britain has tripled over the last 15 years. Last year, 62,000 men whose partners went out to work were classed as “economically inactive” compared to just 21,000 in 1996, the Daily Mail reported.

This follows on from a recent survey which also found that there are 1.4 million men across Britain whose main role is of being the primary carer for their children.

CBI sniffs at Jagan’s link with Emaar realty scam

Hyderabad,January 26:THE CBI is probing a possible link between the alleged illegal assets case involving Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy and the multi- crore Emaar township scam in Hyderabad.

Sources revealed that the arrest of N. Sunil Reddy, a relative and personal assistant of Jaganmohan on Tuesday in connection with the Emaar case has provided some clues that point to this link. Sunil was produced in the special CBI court on Wednesday and it directed him to judicial remand till February 1.

Sharjah: 125 families left homeless after a spectacular wall of flames ravaged a 25-storey residential high-rise on Wednesday morning.

According to the sources, fire broke out at Al Baker 4 in Al Taawun about 2am when most of the occupants were asleep.

ID card must for upper class rail travel

Mangalore, January 26: With effect from February, passengers travelling in First AC, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, AC Chair Car and executive classes in trains will be required to produce the proof of their identity in original during travel.
