Chidambaram unlikely to resign despite adverse judgements

New Delhi, January 31: : It’s not just one, but a triple blow likely for the UPA government as after today’s order on deemed sanction to prosecute after four months, the Supreme Court in the next two days will deliver two more judgements. One will relate to the CBI questioning Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G scam, and the third relates to the Attorney General’s role in the same case.

Justice Ashok Ganguly’s retirement on 2 May has fast tracked all three judgements.

34 Bihar legislators yet to declare assets

Patna, January 31: Even a month after the deadline expired, 34 legislators in Bihar are yet to declare their assets. And most of them are from the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and BJP combine.

The guilty legislators include Public Accounts Committee chairman Lalit Kumar Yadav, and former ministers Raghvendra Pratap Singh and Ram Lashan Ram Raman.

The others who have not given details of their assets are from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Congress and independents.

All legislators had detailed their assets when they filed their nomination in 2010.

SC deadline serious indictment of govt: BJP

New Delhi, January 31: The Supreme Court judgment setting the government a three-month deadline to sanction the prosecution of public servants for corruption was a slap in the government’s face, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said on Tuesday.

Party general secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for protecting the tainted and questioned the government’s stand on the prosecution of Home Minister P Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam.

Nothing wrong with my medicines: Anna

New Delhi, January 31: Social activist Anna Hazare Tuesday denied reported claims by his associates that his health had deteriorated due to the side effects of antibiotics given by his doctor in Pune.

“There have been reports that the medicines given to me were more than what I required or not needed at all. I don’t think the medicines were given to me with a malicious intent,” Hazare said in a statement here.

“Maybe my body couldn’t bear them,” he added.

IAF plane crashes near Chennai

Chennai, January 31: An Indian Air Force (IAF) trainer aircraft crashed into a lake near here early Tuesday but both pilots ejected safely, police said.

A police officer told reporters that the wreckage had been pulled out of the lake and the air force had ordered an inquiry.

Mother arrested for leaving kids aged 3 and 5 on street with just extra diapers

New York, January 31: A mother has been arrested after she abandoned her two daughters aged just three and five on the street with only a few extra diapers.

Dalisha Adams, 26, from Brooklyn, was picked up by police on Sunday night after leaving her children in the cold near housing projects in Brooklyn around 3pm.

Two women came across them and stayed with the young girls until police arrived.

The girl took liberal help of make-up to fake injuries and accused her boyfriend of raping her, reports Daily Mail.

Verdict will help win war on corruption: Swamy

New Delhi, January 31 (IANS) Calling it a big victory for India’s constitution, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy Tuesday welcomed the apex court order setting a three-month deadline for the government to sanction an application seeking prosecution of a public servant for corruption.

“I am happy today by the fact that I visualise that it is possible to win war against corruption. The thorniest issue of sanction (to prosecute a corrupt official) has been simplified by the court order,” Swamy told reporters here.

US govt asks court to reject Rana re-trial plea

Chicago, January 31: The US government has asked a court to deny Pakistan-born Canadian Tahawwur Rana’s plea for a new trial in cases related to the Mumbai and Denmark terror plots, arguing that he has failed to demonstrate that the court erred in convicting him for aiding Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In June last year, after a three-week trial, 50-year-old Rana was convicted of providing material support to the banned LeT, and of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorism in connection with a foiled plot involving Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten.

Hyderabad, January 31 (Siasat News): a woman committed suicide in Pahadi Shareef area by jumping into a pond. It is suspected that she might have taken the extreme step as she was constantly harassed by her paramour.

According to police Pahadi Shareef, the dead body of one Tirupati amma, a labourer, was fished out from Ranganaiku pond.

She had illicit relations with one Venkateshwar Rao as she had left her husband five years back and was living all alone.

Washington, January 31: American drones regularly target terrorists in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, President Barack Obama on Tuesday said in a first such acknowledgment by the top US leadership on its highly successful but secretive programme.

D.A. hike of 5.99% for State Govt. employees

Hyderabad, January 31: State cabinet has decided to enhance Dearness Allowance of State Govt. employees to the extent of 5.99% with effect from 1st July 2011. After the hike, D.A. will be 35.95% which will cost Govt. exchequer to the extent of Rs. 6015 crore per annum.

Farmers will also get Re one lakh interest free loan which will benefit 95 lakh farmers costing a financial burden of Rs. 1500 crore to the Govt. exchequer.
