‘Hands off Iran & Syria’: UK activists

Tehran, January 28: The protest rally entitled “Hands Off Iran and Syria: No Western intervention”, will be held on Saturday from 2pm-4pm outside the US Embassy building in Grosvenor Square London W1, said the Stop the War Coalition in a statement.

The protest campaign is supported by Unite union, War on Want, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Campaign against Sanctions and Military Intervention on Iran (CASMII), Friends of Al-Aqsa, Goldsmiths Student Union and SOAS Student Union, the statement added.

Headless body found on train

Ajmer, January 28: A headless body inside the Bikaner-Secandrabad express shocked passengers on Friday at the Merta road railway station. The headless body kept in a black colour bag under seat number 75 of S9 coach. TTE Virnadra Singh found the luggage during checking. A case has been filed in connection with the case at GRP police Ajmer.

‘Afghan army less equipped than Taliban’

Kabul, January 28: Residents in east Afghanistan have voiced concern about the fighting power of army soldiers, saying militants are better equipped than government forces, Press TV reports.

People in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province in east Afghanistan, say they are worried about the quality of weapons handed to Afghan army and police to fight militants, Press TV reported Friday.

They said that local forces do not have enough weapons to fight Taliban militants after the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force hands over security to the government.

Obama Car for sale

Washington, January 28: A car driven by US President Barack Obama is up for auction on shopping website eBay at a whopping starting bid of $1 million.

Obama, before he became president, reportedly drove the grey 2005 Chrysler 300C sedan.

Lisa Czibor, who is managing the auction, said Obama leased the car for three years from 2004 to 2007 before trading it for a hybrid model.

The ad on eBay says: “Barack Obama owned driven car — 2005 Chrysler 300C 19k miles driven by Barack.”

Tension in Old City over temple bell row

Hyderabad, January 28: Tension was palpable near the historic Charminar on Friday afternoon, but, for a change, it did not take communal hue.

A row over sounding the bell at the Bhagya Laxmi temple abutting the heritage structure during Juma (Friday) prayers put police on their toes for a couple of hours.

However, the Friday prayers passed off peacefully at the Mecca Masjid. Trouble began at noon when nearly 300 Hindu rightwing activists descended on the Bhagya Laxmi temple and started ringing the bell, breaking an unwritten rule of not sounding it during the Juma prayers.

Man stabs wife 35 times – and falls asleep

Taiwan, January 28: A MAN in Taiwan stabbed his wife at least 35 times with a knife and fell asleep next to the blood-stained body, exhausted after his exertions, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.

The incident was only discovered several hours later by one of the couple’s sons, who returned home in the wee hours on Wednesday.

It is learnt that the man, known only as Luo, had flown into a rage before stabbing his sleeping wife.

Police, who were called to the scene, said Luo kept mumbling “cannot sleep, cannot think straight”.

Mob beats up enforcement team

Malacca, January 28: A MALACCA Historical City Council enforcement officer was stabbed in his arm while his four colleagues were beaten up by a group of men during a raid at an illegal cyber cafe at Taman Seri Duyong, here, on Thursday night.

Azizan Abas, 28, sustained severe injuries on his right arm after he was stabbed with a knife by one of the 30 men who attacked the raiding team just before midnight.

The four other enforcement officers were assaulted by the mob who were armed with sticks and metal rods.

The other enforcement officers were also badly bruised.

Govt remarks remind me of medieval age: Nair

New Delhi, January 28: Slamming Union minister V Narayanasamy for his remarks on scientists over the controversial Antrix-Devas deal issue, former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair on Friday said it reminded him of medieval times when Galileo was imprisoned for his scientific observations.

“Today I saw a news item, somebody (Narayanasamy) saying that we want to teach the scientists a lesson,” Nair said in New Delhi. “It’s a big blow to the scientific community.”

“At least scientists are doing something. You also want them to shut-off? It’s very strange,” he said.

Pirates kill 4 Indian fishermen, kidnap 12

Kakdwip, January 28: Two groups of Bangladeshi pirates on Friday night killed four Indian fishermen, injured eight others and hijacked a trawler carrying 12 fishermen in the Bay of Bengal, police said.

One group of pirates fired at the fishermen travelling in ‘Maa Basanti’ trawler at Kendua in the bay resulting in four of them being killed, Rahul Majumdar, SDO at Kakdwip, said, adding eight others were injured.

In the meantime, another group of pirates hijacked ‘Tara’ trawler carrying twelve fishermen and sailed away to the Bangladeshi side, he said.

Back on screen soon: Rajnikanth

Chennai, January 28: Tamil movie superstar Rajnikanth Friday said he will soon be back on the silverscreen in a movie directed by his daughter Soundarya.

Speaking to reporters here after handing over a cheque of Rs 10 lakhs to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa towards Cyclone Thane Relief Fund, Rajnikanth said the shooting of the film, ‘Kochadaiyaan’, would start very soon.

Rajnikanth termed his meeting with Jayalalithaa a courtesy call.

According to a state government release here, a total of Rs 28.4 crore has been received in the cyclone relief fund.

Unrest in Old City, thanks to politicians

Hyderabad, January 28: Little did people know that the banner publicizing the Aarthi on January 27 put up on the walls of the temple abutting the Charminar about four days ago would ring in trouble. In their effort to draw crowds, the involved political groups even took to social networking sites such as Facebook to publicise the event. There were communities active on the site asking people to join the mega event in large numbers and make it successful. Text messages too were beeping on the phones of the Old City residents for the last few days.

Team India denies retirement reports

Adelaide, January 28: Miffed with reports that its senior players were contemplating retirement after failing in the Test series loss to Australia, the Indian team management on Saturday rejected the speculation as “baseless” and refused to answer queries on the matter.

India were whitewashed 0-4 in the Test series that concluded today and the senior batting trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were heavily criticised for their poor show.

Five persons burnt alive in Bihar

Munger, January 28: Five persons, including three children, were burnt alive in a devastating fire which gutted more than 25 huts at Migaon village in Mufassil police station in Bihar’s Munger district, official sources said on Saturday.

The fire broke out late last night when villagers were warming themselves after arranging bonfire because of biting cold, sources said.

The fire soon spread and gutted more than 25 houses at the village, they said.

Two adults, and three children died of burn injuries in the fire, the sources said.

Davos, January 28: Describing Pakistani Parliament as the “new kid on the block”, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said a “little bit of elbowing” was taking place in Pakistan but things would “very soon fall in place”.

“It is not as it may appear to the outside world. It is a new kid on the block called the Parliament in Pakistan. People are still to get used to this fact,” Khar said when asked if the Pakistani judiciary was going a bit too far.

New Delhi, January 28: He is all of 21 and can boast of over 38 million YouTube hits for his song. But Anirudh Ravichander, composer of the phenomenally popular Tamil-English number “Kolaveri di”, is already trying to move out of its shadow.

” ‘Kolaveri di’ is in the past now; I am trying to move on to new projects,” Ravichander said in an interview.

“Although I’m enjoying the success, I realised it was very important to move out of the ‘Kolaveri di’ shadow to concentrate on future projects. I’m still young and raring to make good music,” he added.

Exams of Abid Ali Khan Education Trust

Hyderabad, January 28: (Siasat News) Abid Ali Khan Education Trust was started in 1934 with the aim of promoting Urdu language since inception 5,42,624 students have passed examination in the last (17) years.

Hyderabad, January 28: The jaali mulaquat between prisoners and their visitors is set to undergo a change. Instead of having to shout at the top of their voices in crammed spaces and through three or four layers of iron mesh and grill partitions, microphone and headphone sets will be provided to them while the grill partitions will remain.

“There will be more space provided so that the conversation takes place more quietly and comfortably,” director-general of prisons (jails) C N Gopinath Reddy told TOI.

Raja Singh try to create disturbance before Juma Prayer

Hyderabad, January 28: (Siasat News) Raja Singh, TDP Corporator made an unsuccessful attempt to create disturbance in the city by organizing Aarti programme at Bhagyalakshmi Mandir at Charminar. Panic spread when 200 activists of Hindu Vahini suddenly reached the temple and started ringing the bell and conducted Aarti Programme just before the Friday prayer began. Raja Singh was earlier arrest at 10’o clock from his residence at Mangalhat and shifted to Banjara Hills police station.
