Anna Hazare to be admitted to Gurgaon hospital

New Delhi, January 28: Suffering from ill health, activist Anna Hazare will be brought to Delhi on Sunday and admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon in Haryana, an associate said on Saturday.

“Because of the hard antibiotics that were being administered to him, Anna ji has had some side effects,” the associate told IANS.

“He will stay in Medanta for two days, and then will be shifted to Jindal Naturecare Institute of Bangalore,” he added.

Hazare, 74, was admitted to a hospital December end, after breaking his fast in Mumbai as he suffered from chest infection.

Russia against new Syria UN resolution

Syria, January 28: Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin expressed “deep” disappointment with the draft, Russia Today reported.

“The proposed draft resolution cannot be used as the basis of solving the situation,” Churkin said.

Churkin accused the Arab League of trying to “impose” a solution to “undercut” efforts to find a political solution to the unrest in Syria.

The draft echoes the Arab League’s call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to transfer power to his deputy.

Spain’s 4th largest airliner goes broke

Spain, January 28: Spanair ceased operations on Friday night after failing to negotiate a deal with Qatar Airways who sought to buy a stake in the airline, according to the Catalan regional government in Spain.

Over 3,500 employees have lost their jobs as a result of the decision.

Moreover, at least 22,000 passengers have been affected as 380 domestic and international flights have been cancelled this weekend alone.

PM fast-tracks development of inland waterways

New Delhi, January 28: In a bid to ease the burden on rail and road infrastructure, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has taken steps to fast-track the development and use of inland waterways by involving public and private sectors.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has agreed to use the inland waterways to transport three million metric tonnes of coal for Barh power project in Bihar.

Russia rejects UN Syria move but says ready to talk

Damascus, January 28: As Arab League observers begin a new mission in Syria, the UN Security Council has been considering a draft resolution against Damascus.

It follows calls by the Arab League for stronger action after an upsurge in violence.

Russia, which vetoed a previous draft resolution, says this one too is unacceptable, though it is willing to “engage” with the co-sponsors, Britain, France and Germany.

Lucknow, January 28: A day after BJP released its Uttar Pradesh poll manifesto, Samajwadi Party accused it of “directly lifting” several key sops from the Samajwadi Party (SP) manifesto.

“The BJP has lifted several key sops and promises from the SP manifesto,” SP state president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said while addressing an election rally in Kushinagar.

Tirupati, Jan 28 (INN): Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy on Saturday warned that the government would act sternly against those who were desecrating the statues of national leaders in the state and causing law and order problem.

Three held for desecration of Ambedkar statues in Andhra

Hyderabad, January 28: Andhra Pradesh Police Saturday arrested three people for recent desecration of statues of B.R. Ambedkar in East Godavari district as Dalit groups continued protests in parts of the state.

Police brought three arrested youths before media and said they were on the lookout for 10 others involved in the Monday incident at Amlapuram.

Special investigating officer Krishnam Raju said the youths damaged the statues in an inebriated condition. “It is an act committed on the spur of a moment and no political group or any other section is involved in it,” he said.

Hazare to be shifted to Delhi for treatment

Pune, January 28: Social activist Anna Hazare would be shifted to a hospital in Gurgaon, near Delhi, on Sunday, his associates said on Saturday.

Anna’s aide Datta Awari told news agency from his native village Ralegan Siddhi that Hazare would be leaving for Delhi tomorrow.

“We are now planning an Ayurvedic treatment,” he said, adding that Hazare would be admitted to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon.

Manish Sisodiya, a member of Hazare’s core team, said Hazare would be taken to Gurgaon for “detailed medical check-up” as he was suffering from persisting cough and back-pain.

Prostitution racket busted in Bangalore

Bangalore, January 28: Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a prostitution racket at two different places in the city and arrested seven persons besides seizing Rs 4000.

The seven were nabbed by the City Crime Branch team during raids conducted yesterday, a CCB statement said.

Two others allegedly involved in the racket are absconding and hunt is on to trace them.

Meanwhile, Police in a statement said three chain snatchers were taken into custody during raids conducted in 18 police station limits.

Afghan president in UK to discuss troop withdrawal

London, January 28: Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in the UK to discuss the departure of British forces with PM David Cameron.

The leaders will sign an agreement setting out how their two countries will work together after UK combat troops withdraw in 2014.

The meeting follows France’s announcement that it is bringing forward its troop withdrawal by one year, to the end of 2013.

Mr Karzai said in Paris on Friday that Afghan troops would replace the French.

He said: “France and other allied countries have helped Afghanistan considerably in the past 10 years.

Bukhari rejects Cong’s quota for Muslims; backs SP

Lucknow, January 28: In a poll blow to Congress, Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari on Saturday rejected the ruling party’s Muslim sub-quota of 4.5 percent and supported Samajwadi Party for the upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Violence hits polls in Manipur; 5 dead

Imphal, Janurary 28: At least five people were killed on Saturday in firing that followed a booth capturing attempt in Chandel constituency, which went to polls today in Manipur along with 59 other seats.

According to reports, some people tried to capture a polling booth in Chandel. The attempt led to exchange of fire between the CRPF jawans posted there and miscreants.

One CRPF jawan, a woman and three officials on election duty have been reportedly killed in the incident.

Indian-origin woman dies in US jail after 15-day hunger strike

Washington, January 28: An Indian-origin woman, who was being held at a Chicago jail for allegedly failing to show up for jury duty, has died in custody after a 15-day hunger strike.

52-year-old Lyvita Gomes, a former airline trainer for Delta Airlines, died in Lake County jail on January 3, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Funeral arrangements for Gomes, which have now been fixed, were earlier delayed until her relatives arrived from the United Kingdom this weekend, Alfredo Miranda, owner of Miranda Funeral Services, was quoted as saying.

US making more powerful ‘Bunker-buster’ to hit Iran: report

Washington, January 28: The US military has stepped up efforts to make their largest conventional weapon, the 13.6 tonne ”bunker-buster” bomb, more powerful and capable of destroying Iran’s most heavily fortified underground nuclear facilities.

The efforts have been speeded up as part of contingency planning for a possible strike against Iranian nuclear sites, the Wall Street Journal reported quoting US officials.
The move comes after Pentagon war planners concluded that their largest bomb isn’t yet capable of reaching Tehran’s nuclear weapon-making facilities buried deep underground.

Shiv Sainiks attack daily’s office

Mumbai, Jan 28 (IANS) Suspected Shiv Sainiks barged into the Times of India office and damaged its reception area in south Mumbai Saturday to protest an article, an official said.

The daily paper had written that the party’s Anand Rao Adsul was to switch over to the Nationalist Congress Party, but he did not do so. The Shiv Sena activists attacked the office to vent their anger against the news.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that there are more than 346 million people worldwide suffering from diabetes. According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), India tops the list with more than 50 million people with diabetes.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) states that there are about 10 lakh children with type I diabetes in India. Type II diabetes among children is also on the rise because of an increase in obesity among children. It is high time we understand the burden of this disease and spread awareness among everyone to combat this menace.

Kuwaiti school boy raped by seven men

Kuwait, January 28: Seven men kidnapped a school boy, beat him up and raped him before sending him back to school, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

One of them had phoned the boy at the primary school in Kuwait City and asked him to come out, claiming he was sent by his family.

“The boy’s father told police the seven kidnapped his son, raped him and beat him up…they then brought him back,” Alwatan daily said.

It said the father identified one of them and that police have mounted a manhunt for the rapist.

Probe ordered into Yanam violence

Puducherry, January 28: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the violence by workers of a private factory in Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, that led to the lynching of a top official of the unit after a union leader allegedly died in police action.

The frenzied workers of the Regency Ceramics went on the rampage on Friday after their leader M.S. Murali Mohan was allegedly killed in police action outside the factory and attacked the residence of president (Operations) K.C. Chandrasekhar, resulting in fatal head injuries.
