Nigerian held with cocaine worth Rs.1.75 crore

New Delhi, January 01: A 32-year-old Nigerian was arrested from west Delhi with cocaine estimated to be worth Rs.1.75 crore, police said Sunday.

Paul Chinedu Ugwor alias Emma, who lives in Uttam Nagar, was arrested Saturday from Shivaji Marg in Janakpuri.

‘He was arrested for procuring 175 gms of cocaine, which was to be delivered to one of his contacts, worth Rs.1.75 crore in the international market,’ said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) P.S. Kushwah.

Hazare’s condition improving, say doctors

Pune, January 01: The health of Anna Hazare, who has been admitted to a private hospital here after suffering from viral infection, is improving but he will need to remain in hospital for a week and not go on fast for at least one month, doctors attending on him said on Sunday.

“He is showing signs of improvement….he is being treated for chest infection and will require to remain in the hospital for at least a week,” said Dr Parag Sancheti.

Kolkata, January 01: Maintaining its firm stand on the Lokayukta provision of the Lokpal Bill, Trinamool Congress on Sunday said it wanted a strong anti-graft ombudsman, but not by compromising on the federal structure of the Constitution.

US tourist trashed for kissing women on New year eve ?

Tuticorin January 01: Three US tourists indulging in New Year’s revelry were injured when local public thrashed them after they allegedly hugged and kissed women passers-by in an inebriated state here, police said today.

The three men from California were injured when the public assaulted and threw stones at them last night. Two of them, later handed over to the police, have been hospitalised while another managed to flee the scene, police said adding they were in their late 40s.

Hospital sources said the two had suffered bruises and concussions and were under treatment.

2 ½ kgs gold seized, 5 arrested

Hyderabad, January 1: Cyberabad police arrested five burglars and seized two and a half kilos of gold ornaments and one and a half kilo silver ornaments worth Rs 60 lakhs.

Cyberabad commissioner of police D Tirmal Rao told this who was addressing a press conference here. He told that the burglars were involved in 51 cases. They were wanted by the police since 2007.

Police informed that the thieves surveyed to find the houses under lock and then were breaking open the locks and committing thefts.

Man sets over 20 fires in LA

Washington, January 01: Los Angeles police are searching for a man suspected to have caused at least 28 fires that have burned vehicles and buildings around the city.

At least seven cars were in flames Saturday in the North Hollywood area, added to the 21 fires that were reported Thursday night at different areas in the city, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The fires were set rapidly one after another and almost all began with a vehicle. The flames spread in some cases to nearby houses and apartment buildings, police said.

London, January 01: The number of people with anxiety disorders has more than quadrupled in four years. Some of this could be explained by an expansion in counselling services and increase in mental problems triggered by financial uncertainties.

We won’t eat halal meat: British MPs

London, January 01: British Muslim MPs have been told they cannot have meat slaughtered in line with Islamic tradition because the method is offensive to many of their non-Muslim colleagues, a media report said.

The halal method involves slitting the animal’s throat without first stunning it.

The Palace of Westminster has rejected demands to serve halal meat in its restaurants, media reported.

The stance has infuriated some parliamentarians who have eaten meat in the Palace’s 23 restaurants and cafes, having been assured that it was halal.

Foreign national caught with khat leaves

Hyderabad, January 1: Mangalhatt Police have arrested a Yemeni national and seized khat leaves (a narcotic) from his possession.

ACP Goshamahal told that police arrested 54 year old Ahmed Obaid Mansoor resident of Mohammad Nagar, Shaheen Nagar while patrolling. Police seized Kath leaves which were in a carton.

The leaves are said to be used as narcotic substance.

Eight killed in Andhra on New Year’s Day

Hyderabad, January 01: At least eight people were killed on New Year’s Day in accidents in different parts of Andhra Pradesh, police said Sunday.

Four revellers were killed and another critically injured when the motorcycle they were riding fell in a drain after hitting a road divider in Secunderabad here early Sunday.

The youngsters were returning home after participating in New Year celebrations.

As all the five were riding one bike, it lost control, hit the road divider and fell into a nearby drain, police said.

Toll in Andhra hooch tragedy rises to 13

Hyderabad, January 01: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district rose to 13 with three more people succumbing Sunday, police said.

Hours before the dawn of New Year, the tragedy struck Poratanagar in Krishna district of coastal Andhra.

Ten people are still battling for life in hospitals at Mylavarm and Vijayawada.

The dead include three women. The victims, belonging to three tribal hamlets, consumed the country-made liquor Saturday evening. They suffered giddiness and were rushed to the hospitals.

Ten died Saturday night and three Sunday morning.
