Islamic Centre, Hindu Worship Place Attacked In US

New York, January 03: Authorities are investigating as bias crimes attacks at four locations in New York, including an Islamic centre and a Hindu place of worship, in which Molotov cocktails were hurled at the sites damaging property.

The attacks took place in Queens near here last night in which unidentified assailants threw homemade firebombs at a house used for Hindu worship services, Islamic centre Imam Al-Khoei Foundation, a home and a convenience store.

Iran to issue verdict of US spy soon

Tehran, January 03: Iran’s Prosecutor General Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says that a verdict will be issued soon for a CIA operative of Iranian descent who is on trial for espionage.

“The court proceeding has come to an end and his lawyer has said that he will present the court with his last defense,” Mohseni-Ejei said on Monday.

“No verdict has been issued yet, but the verdict will be issued after the last defense is presented to the court,” he added.

Hyderabad, January 03 (INN): Mounting pressure from all sides, an all-party delegation organised by anti-liquor activists committee demanded the Government to check sale of spurious liquor even as TDP demanded an inquiry into the incident.

An all-party delegation called on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at his Camp Office on Monday and appealed him to check sale of spurious liquor, which claimed 17 lives on the New Year eve in Mylavaram in Krishna district.

Retired IAS officer to probe Mylavaram hooch tragedy

Hyderabad, January 03 (INN): Excise Minister Mopidevi Venkatramana Rao on Monday announced a high-level enquiry into the death of 17 tribals in Mylavaram of Krishna district due to consumption of spurious liquor.

Talking to reporters at his chambers in D-Block of State Secretariat, the minister said that the presence of excess methane in the country-made liquor caused the death of tribals at Poratanagar and Mylavaram hamlets. However, he said a detailed probe has been ordered to go into the factors that led to the tragic incident.

Ahead of polls, advisory panel pushes for Muslims’ welfare

New Delhi, January 02: The Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC) has asked the government to focus on welfare of minorities in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17), a recommendation that comes ahead of the assembly polls in five states in January-February.

The move follows the government’s December 2011 move to approve a 4.5 percent sub-quota for minorities within the existing 27.5 percent quota for the other backward classes in central jobs and admission to central educational institutions.

Student murder accused gives name as ‘Psycho Stapleton

New Delhi, January 02: The man accused of gunning down Indian student Anuj Bidve on Boxing Day gave his name as “Psycho Stapleton” when he appeared in court today charged with murder.

Kiaran Stapleton, 20, from Ordsall, Salford, was remanded in custody for 24 hours at City of Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Bidve, 23, described as a “promising and clever” student, was shot once in the head after being approached by a lone gunman at around 1.30 am on December 26. He died a short time later in hospital.

85-year old woman, servant murdered

Jaipur, January 02: An 85-year old woman and her servant were murdered allegedly by another servant, hired just two days back, in her house while her son was abroad on a business trip, police said Monday.

The woman was the mother of a prominent jewellery businessman.

Some cash and jewellery is missing and the police suspect that the domestic help, who had been hired Dec 31 without police verification, committed the crime.

Police said that incident took place at the house of jeweller Vijay Tank in Malviya Nagar while Vijay was in Bangkok on a business trip.

No hike in petrol prices this fortnight

New Delhi, January 02: Petrol prices will not be raised this fortnight as state-owned oil firms apparently could not get political clearance for the over Rs 2 per litre hike in rates needed to achieve parity with the imported cost on account of the weakening rupee.

Indian Oil (IOC) and other state-run firms, which had last month refrained from hiking petrol prices as the government was wary of protests while Parliament was in session, are not raising the rates even this fortnight, a source privy to the development said.

Budget to be presented after state polls: Mukherjee

New Delhi, January 02: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the Union Budget will be presented after the completion of elections in five states.

However, he said Government has not yet decided the final date of presentation.

“We have not yet decided the time for the Budget, but naturally it will be after the elections,” Mr Mukherjee told reporters here.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur are scheduled to be held between January 30 to March 3.

Counting of votes will be held on March 4.

Saudi to apply law for women only to sell lingerie

Riyadh, January 02: Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia said on Monday it will begin enforcing a law that allows only females to work in women’s lingerie and apparel stores, despite disapproval from the country’s top cleric.

The 2006 law banning men from working in female apparel and cosmetic stores has never been put into effect, partly because of view of hard-liners in the religious establishment, who oppose the whole idea of women working where men and women congregate together, like malls.
