Omar says CISF firing ‘inexcusable’, promises justice

Uri, January 03: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday slammed the CISF over the killing of a youth during firing on protesters, accusing it of using “excessive” force which was “unwarranted and inexcusable”.

As the incident during protests against power shortage outside NHPC-run Uri Power Project at Boniyar yesterday sparked an outrage, Omar flew in from the winter capital Jammu and met the family members of Altaf Ahmad at Barnait village in Uri tehsil, 90 kms from Srinagar.

BJP, Team Anna causing confusion on Lokpal bill: Moily

Kolkata, January 03: Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Anna Hazare on the fiasco over the Lokpal Bill, Congress leader and union Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily Tuesday accused both of confusing the country about the bill and creating anarchy.

‘I don’t know how long it (debate over the bill) should go on…It has been on public debate since 1966. Even after the lapse of 50 years, this has been going on,’ Moily told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by SREI Foundation here.

Congress, TDP want to see Jagan behind bars

Hyderabad, January 03: The ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh has hailed the arrest of Vijay Sai Reddy, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s aide, and believes that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would arrest Jagan and others soon.

‘Vijay Sai Reddy’s arrest is a part of the whole thing. The CBI has evidence that Jagan and others looted public assets. I am sure the CBI will arrest the remaining 74 accused,’ said Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health D.L. Ravindra Reddy.

Cong plays down TMC plans for Goa, Manipur polls

New Delhi, January 03: Congress on Tuesday played down plans of key UPA constituent Trinamool Congress to contest Assembly elections in Goa and Manipur, currently ruled by it.

“If I recall, at some point of time the Trinamool Congress had also contested elections from Tripura, Jharkhand and probably in Kerala. So I leave it to your judgement whether it constitutes spreading the political base,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.

Amarinder clarifies on his letter to Antony

New Delhi, : Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh on Tuesday clarified that the letter he had written to Defence Minister AK Antony on the date of birth issue of Army Chief Gen. VK Singh was only in his personal capacity.

Referring to a media report on the issue, Singh, in a statement here, said he had written the letter to the Defence Minister about a month ago putting forth his opinion on the issue only in his personal capacity.

According to the report, Singh had supported the Army Chief saying he had the support of the vast majority of ex-servicemen.

2 bodies of newborns found at railway track

Hyderabad, January 3: In an inhuman incident occurred at Necklace road, the famous recreational place of the city, police recovered two bodies of newborn babies.

It is said that Nampally railway police recovered the bodies on the railway track between Necklace road and Begumpet. The bodies are of a baby boy and a baby girl.

Police has kept the bodies at morgue for identification and investigations are on.

Dowry case filed by wife drives husband to suicide

Hyderabad, January 3: 26 year old Meraj Khan, resident of Indira Nagar poured kerosene over his body and set himself on fire. Dowry case filed by his wife is said to be the cause for him resorting to suicide. The man was said to be distraught by frequent visits to court.

The incident occurred under Medchal police station limits under Cyberabad police Commissionerate.

He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to burn injuries last night.

It is said that Meraj Khan had served imprisonment in dowry harassment case and was distressed by the court visits.

Jamiat Ulame-e-Hind convention on Jan 5

Cyclone makes city sweat

Hyderabad, January 03: The otherwise dipping minimum temperature has shot drastically over the last two days with the city recording 21 degrees Celsius. This season’s lowest temperature has been 11.8 degrees. The weathermen attributed the six degree jump from the normal weather during this period to the cyclone. Majid Hussain is the new mayor of Greater Hyderabad

Hyderabad, January 03: Mohammed Majid Hussain of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) is the new mayor of Greater Hyderabad.

Accused in cop murder arrested after 19 years

Hyderabad, January 03: Nearly two decades after the assassination of additional superintendent of police, G Krishna Prasad and his gunman, police on Monday arrested one of the accused. The person, Mohammed Najeeb Ahmed alias Mohammed Sikander Ali is the brother of Mohammed Mujeeb Ahmed, the key accused presently lodged in a prison in Rajasthan.

According to sources, Najeeb was also present at the location where Krishna Prasad and his gunmen G Venkateswara Rao were gunned down in an encounter at Brindavan Colony in Tolichowki on November 29, 1992.

Girl slaugthered for a better harvest

New Delhi, January 03: Two men have been arrested for allegedly killing a seven-year-old girl and cutting out her liver in a ritual sacrifice to ensure a better harvest.

Lalita Tati disappeared in October and her dismembered remains were found a week later, Rajendra Narayan Das, a senior police officer in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh said.

Police arrested two men, both farmers, last week and they told police they killed the girl to appease their gods and get a better harvest, Das said.

Student killing: Omar takes on CISF

Srinagar, January 03: After a peaceful 2011, the start of 2012 has again spelled trouble for the Omar Abdullah government in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Monday, a student protesting power shortage at Boniyar village in Baramulla district was killed in firing by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). A day later, the Chief Minister travelled to the hotspot of the agitation to soothe nerves.

While promising to look into power crisis in the state, Omar described the incident as “excessive use of force by the CISF”.
