Hyderabad, January 06 (INN): The corporatisation of medicare has taken a heavy toll and things seem to have slipped out of Government hands. If indifference is the trade mark of government hospitals, private ones have become business entities.

President Pratibha Patil’s staff member had to leave a Government Hospital against medical advice as he was not getting the proper treatment and when the First Lady took up the issue the entire administration was jolted. Some scapegoat will be found, is a different issue.

Wave Of Bombings Kill 72 In Iraq

Baghdad, January 06: A wave of bombings targeting Shiites in Iraq killed 72 people on Thursday, deepening sectarian tensions that exploded just after the last American troops left the country in mid-December.

The coordinated attacks targeting Shiites bore the hallmarks of Sunni insurgents linked to al-Qaida, although there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Andhra Cong leaders complain to Azad about CM

Hyderabad, January 06: Congress General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday met several party leaders in Hyderabad, including some ministers of N Kiran Kumar Reddy government who were understood to have voiced their displeasure about the style of function of the chief minister.

Almost every leader worth the name, who met Azad separately at the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters Gandhi Bhavan, reportedly alleged the chief minister was acting in a “unilateral manner”.

US delivered justice to bin Laden: Obama

Washington, January 06: United States President Barack Obama on Thursday said that the US has delivered justice to Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and put his terror group on the path of defeat.

“We’ve decimated Al Qaeda’s leadership, delivered justice to Osama bin Laden, and put that terrorist network on the path to defeat,” Obama said in his rare appearance at the Pentagon, the head office of the US department of Defense.

Li Dianwu, a chemistry senior at Nankai University in Tianjin in north China, dissolved useless CPUs in a solution of sulfuric acid, thiourea and hydrogen peroxide, and filtered the solution with activated carbon.

Then he put the metal-filled activated carbon in a muffle furnace and extracted 65 milligrams of gold at a temperature of 1,100 degrees Celsius, the Shanghai Morning Post reported Wednesday.

Jama Masjid blast: Judicial custody of six accused extended

New Delhi, January 05 : A court here Thursday extended till Jan 19 the judicial custody of six accused in the 2010 Jama Masjid firing and blast in which two foreigners were injured.

Police told the court that they were awaiting the forensic report of bullet shells found at the site of September 2010 incident.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav asked police about the forensic report of the articles recovered from the place of incident. The police replied that the report was awaited.

‘Kalam frisking was a blunder’

New Delhi, January 05 (IANS) India Thursday said the frisking of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at New York’s JFK Airport was a “blunder” and it would not accept the violation of any rules that exempted certain dignitaries.

Speaking at a function here, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was willing to send an official to apologise, but the “former president was an extremely gracious person” and the matter was closed.

New Delhi, January 05: RSS and Digvijaya Singh clashed over publication of a photograph which showed the senior Congress leader sharing dais with Sangh leaders at a Hindu meet.

Anna Hazare’s health improves

Pune, January 05: Activist Anna Hazare’s health is stable and is improving, doctors attending to him said here Thursday. The 74-year-old is eating well and in good spirits.

“Anna is stable and improving. His appetite is better now and he is eating well. He also did a 15-minute walk on the treadmill and is responding well to treatment,” said Mahendra Kawedia from Sancheti Hospital, who has been closely monitoring Hazare’s condition.

Riyadh, January 05: When an Arab man stepped out of his house with his presumed girl friend in Saudi Arabia, he instantly reversed course and jumped back home after seeing a patrol of the Kingdom’s feared Islamic police.

The man made the mistake of his life when he just hurried back in and shut the door, leaving his girl friend outside. The patrol was passing in the area by coincidence when it was attracted by the man’s behaviour.

60 dead in attack on Iraqi Shias, bombings

Baghdad, January 05: A suicide bomber Thursday detonated his explosives among Shia pilgrims in southern Iraq, killing at least 36 people and injuring 72 others. Another 24 people were killed in bombings in Baghdad, authorities said.

The attack on Shias took place in the town of al-Batthaa, some 370 km south of Baghdad. The bomber blew up his explosive vest near a procession of Shia pilgrims.

An Iraqi army officer and two soldiers who were guarding the procession were among the dead, a police source said.

19 Bangladeshi fishermen rescued off Andhra coast

Hyderabad, January 05:Nineteen Bangladeshi fishermen, who had lost their way in the Bay of Bengal, were rescued by fishermen from Andhra Pradesh Thursday.

Police said the fishermen in their trawler were found near Donkuru village of Srikakulam district.

Without food and water for the past several days, the Bangladeshis were in a bad condition and all of them were admitted to a government-run hospital at Itchapuram.

Spurned lover throws acid on girl

Kanpur, January 05: A jilted lover enraged by his girlfriend’s refusal to marry him allegedly threw acid on her, injuring her seriously.

The girl used to run a pan masala stall to support herself and her younger brother after her parents died.

The incident took place at the busy Birhana road area in Kanpur last night when Sameer, a resident of Kuti Mall, along with his friend came on a motorbike and threw acid on the 16-year-old girl, police said.

The victim was rushed to a hospital with severe burns on her hand and chest, they said.

College student jumps to death in Delhi hospital

New Delhi, January 05:Depressed over failing in an exam, a student of Zakir Hussain College jumped to his death from the third floor of a hospital where he was being treated after slashing his wrists in an unsuccessful suicide bid, police said Thursday.

Rocky Rai, 22, a third year B.Sc student hailing from Bihar’s Darbhanga district, ended his life around 10.30 p.m. Wednesday.

“He committed suicide by jumping off from the third floor of the LNJP (Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan) Hospital,” a police officer said.

Techie commits suicide in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, January 05: A 35-year-old software engineer of Intelligroup who was reportedly depressed for being overweight committed suicide by setting himself ablaze at his house in Miyapur on Tuesday night.

The engineer, K Chandrasekhar of Vijayawada, was working at Intelligroup’s Madhapur branch, Miyapur police said. He got married three years ago and the couple was residing at Hemdurga Plaza in Miyapur.

Haren Pandya case: SC allows CBI plea on acquittal of 12

New Delhi, January 05: The Supreme Court on Thursday admitted the appeal filed by the CBI and the Gujarat government challenging the high court’s acquittal of 12 convicts in the sensational murder of former state home minister Haren Pandya.

A bench of justices P Sathasivam and J Chelameshwar, while admitting the petition, issued notices to the convicts for their response.

While additional solicitor general Harin Raval appeared for the CBI, senior counsel L Nageshwar Rao and counsel Hemantika Wahi appeared for the state of Gujarat.
