Naidu visits Warangal despite shutdown, protests

Hyderabad, January 07: Braving violent protests by Telangana activists, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Friday successfully completed his padyatra in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal district.

Winding up his day-long tour with a public meeting at Palakurti, Naidu reiterated that he was not against Telangana.

Blaming the Congress for the current uncertainty over Telangana, he said it was for the Congress government to clear this.

Kolkata, January 07: The war of words between the Congress and the Trinamool turned physical, with students unions of the two allies clashing at a college in North Bengal. Trinamool activists severely beat-up the principal of the Raigunj College, Dilip Dey Sarkar, on Thursday.

Hundreds of Trinamool activists stormed into the college, ransacked class rooms, barged into the principal’s office, dragged him out and thrashed him. The Trinamool’s grouse was that Mr Sarkar had refused to postpone students elections in the college which is dominated by the Congress’s Chhatra Parishad.

New York, January 07: The New York man, facing hate crime charges for attacking an Islamic centre and a Hindu temple, went about throwing molotov cocktails at the places as he “hated all Muslims and Arabs” for trying to take over his life and wanted to inflict the maximum damage to them.

Ray Lazier Lengend, 40, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on hate crime and arson charges.

He told police authorities that he attacked the centres over the weekend as he believed Muslims were trying to take over his life.

Role of Muslims in freedom struggle not portrayed well, feels Ghulam Nabi Azad

Hyderabad, January 07: The role of Muslims in India’s freedom struggle has not been portrayed properly in history books, feels Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Addressing a public meeting organised by Jamiat Ulama-I- Hind as a part of its second state-level meet here on Thursday night, he said though Muslims were not behind others in the fight for independence, the facts had not been properly highlighted in history books and text books.

Jamiat had called for non-cooperation against the British in 1920, and was also against the Partition, he noted.

OU students stone Naidu convoy

Hyderabad, January 06: Students of Osmania University campus on Friday morning hurled stones at the convoy of Telugu Desam party president and former chief minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at Tarnaka in Hyderabad as he began his ‘Warangal tour’.

The Osmania University police, who took precautions after the university students announced that they would not allow the convoy to pass through the road, lobbed tear gas shells to quell the agitating students.

Over 50 students gathered at the ‘A’ ground on the campus and started pelting stones at the convoy from Aradhana theatre side.

Hyderabad, January 06: New mayor of Greater Hyderabad Majid Hussain assumed charge in the presence of Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, former deputy mayor Jaffer Hussain and other corporators and supporters.

Death penalty sought for Mubarak

London, January 06: Accusing Hosni Mubarak of ordering the killing of anti-regime demonstrators, a prosecutor in the former Egyptian president’s trial has demanded death sentence for the leader who was toppled in a popular uprising last February.

“The law foresees the death penalty for premeditated murder,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Egyptian prosecutor Mustafa Khater telling the court.

Mullah Omar talking peace with US

Kabul, January 06 : The elusive Afghan Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, who had called on his warriors last November to continue the war against NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, has now confirmed having opened peace talks with the US authorities, Geo News reported.

The one-eyed Omar, who has escaped the US manhunt since his regime was ousted in late 2001, made two demands — release of Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay detention facility and complete pullout of US-led forces from Afghanistan, the report added.

Nearly 3,000 jailed for drunken driving in Delhi

New Delhi, January 06: In one of the biggest crackdowns on drunken driving in the last few years, more than 18,000 drivers were prosecuted and nearly 3,000 jailed in 2011, Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said Friday.

Addressing the annual press conference of Delhi Police, Gupta said that “18,073 people were prosecuted in 2011 whereas the figure was 11,388 in 2010.”

“Driving licenses of 2,212 people were suspended and 2,960 offenders were imprisoned,” he added.

According to Gupta, the prosecutions were an “all time high”.

New Delhi, January 06: Congress appears to be buying time with Mamata Banerjee till the assembly elections in five states, including UP, are completed, by asserting there is “no rift” with the ally despite the recent acrimony.

Addressing the annual press conference of the Delhi Police, Gupta said: “According to the latest data, 18 percent of murders in Delhi are sex-related. Other prominent reasons for murders are sudden provocation and crime-related.”

According to Gupta, family disputes were found to be behind only nine percent of murders. Enmity and disputes were the other chief motives during 2011.

98% rape, molestation accused known to victims: Delhi Police

New Delhi, January 06: Despite several new initiatives by Delhi Police to make the national capital safer for women, the year 2011 saw a significant increase in the number of rape and molestation cases than the previous year with 98 per cent of the offenders being either related or known to the victims.

A total of 568 rape cases were reported in the year gone by as compared to 507 in 2010. However, the incidence of rape per lakh population has shown a steady decline in Delhi, coming down from 4.42 per lakh in 2005 to 3.39 per lakh in 2011.

Court notice to police for not filing FIR against Kumble

Bangalore, January 06: The Karnataka High Court Friday served notice to the Bangalore police commissioner for not registering an FIR against former cricketer Anil Kumble in an impersonation and forgery case.

Serving the notice, Justice S. Abdul Naseer directed the police commissioner to explain by next week why a First Information Report (FIR) was not registered against Kumble, who had been accused of forging the signature of petitioner Kumar V. Jahgirdar in an application for renewing the passport of the latter’s minor daughter Aaruni Kumar Jahgirdar in April 2011.

Court fines Sheila Dikshit Rs.3,000

New Delhi, January 06: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was today slapped with a fine of Rs 3,000 by the Delhi High Court for failing to file a reply in a defamation suit filed by her against BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

Justice Kailash Gambhir imposed the fine as Dikshit’s counsel sought adjournment of the case saying they needed more time to file the reply to Gupta’s contention questioning the high court’s power to hear her defamation suit against him.

Giving last opportunity to Dikshit’s counsel, Justice Kailash Gambhir posted the matter for March 15.

SIT Reluctant to Examine Key-Witnesses in Riots: Bhatt

Ahmedabad, January 06: Making serious allegations against the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt today said that the agency was “reluctant” in examining key-witnesses about the February 27, 2002 meeting held at Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.

In a letter to SIT chairman R K Raghavan, Bhatt has also alleged that the agency was “intentionally disregarding” important aspects of riot victim Zakia Jaffery’s complaint implicating Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others.

HC dismisses petition against Hazare

Mumbai, January 06: Refusing to grant any relief, the Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed a public interest litigation filed by a Pune-based activist seeking investigations into the trust of Anna Hazare.

The PIL filed by Hemant Patil, president of Rashtriya Brashtachar Virodhi Janshakti, claimed that Hazare’s Hind Swaraj Trust had not submitted audit reports from the year 2005 to 2007 before the Charity Commissioner.

‘Govt ready to give more autonomy to IIMs, IITs’

Hyderabad, January 06: The Government is willing to give greater autonomy to premier professional educational institutes such as IIMs and IITs, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said on Friday.

“We completely believe in autonomy. Because, that autonomy will bring in greater flexibility within the system and encourage them (the institutes) to do much better than what they are doing now,” she said here.
