Boy, 10, scalded with hot oil

Singapore, December 29: A mother and her two daughters have been sentenced to jail for a string of abuses on a young boy who was staying with them.

Between 2009 and June 2011, the boy, who is 10 years old now, was subjected to a variety of abuses, including having his fingers cut with a pair of scissors, being burnt with a hot iron, and being beaten repeatedly, reports The Straits Times.

On one occasion, the boy was scalded with hot oil for eating up all the food in the house, the daily said.

People Concern: Decks cleared for Andhra nuclear plant

Hyderabad, December 29: The first step to build the controversial 6,000- megawatt nuclear power plant at Kovvada village in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh has been taken, with the state ordering the land acquisition process.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited ( NPCIL) will go ahead with the Srikakulam project despite raging protests over the Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu.

Hyderabad, December 29: Govt. of A.P. repatriated the services of Mr. Habeebuddin Ahmed to his parent department. Secretary of Minorities Welfare Dept. Dr. Mohammed Ali Rafath, IAS issued G.O. No. 335 to repatriate Mr. Habeebuddin to General Administration Department. Mr. Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar, Deputy Secretary has been given additional responsibility of CEO. He will hold additional charge of CEO until further orders.

Mr. Habeebuddin Ahmed has been asked to report to his parent department with immediate effect.

SIT plea for Bajrangi’s bail cancellation rejected

Ahmedabad, December 29: Gujarat High court on Monday rejected the Special Investigation Team (SIT)’s plea seeking cancellation of bail of Babu Bajrangi, former VHP leader and an accused in the 2002 Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam riot cases.

The petition by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT, filed in August last year, was rejected by Justice RH Shukla.

‘Bhatt never worked as staff officer under me’

Ahmedabad, December 29: Former Gujarat DGP RB Sreekumar today denied before the Nanavati Commission that suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt had worked as a staff officer under him during the 2002 post-Godhra riots.

Accused in 2008 Gujarat blasts arrested

Lucknow, December 29: An accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts was arrested by a joint team of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat Police, officials said on Wednesday.

Habib alias Taiyab was arrested from Jahingarabad area in Ambedkar Nagar district yesterday, they said.

During questioning, he said he came in contact with SIMI members at a Madarsa in Azamgarh.

In 2007, Taiyab joined SIMI’s Safdar Nagauri faction and in 2008, he received training in a camp, the officials said.

He would be taken to Gujarat on transit remand, they said.

Gandhinagar, December 29: Election to 8,250 village panchayats of Gujarat will be held on Thursday amid tight security.

The panchayat election, on such a large scale, is being seen in the state as the semi-final of the next year’s assembly election. Chief Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP and the Congress are the two main contenders in tomorrow’s election.

Though the village panchayat elections are not fought with party symbols, in most places, BJP-backed panels are named Sadbhavna panels, while the Congress has named its panels as ‘shanti’ panel or ‘vikas’ panel.

15 dead in warehouse blast

Yangon, December 29: A huge explosion early Thursday at a warehouse on the outskirts of Yangon left at least 15 people dead, among them five women, officials said.

The blast took place around 2.00 am in Mingalartaungnyung, about five kilometres east of downtown Yangon.

A huge fire engulfed the warehouse after the blast.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

A fire official said that at least 15 people have died and about 60 others injured.

According to Xinhua, more than 10 fire-engines were used to douse the fire.

Girl kills self after bath video blackmail

New Delhi, December 29: In a detestable incident, a teenager committed suicide when one of her neighbours showed her father a video of her taking a bath.

A realtor plotted the conspiracy as he wanted a piece of land owned by the 15-year-old girl’s father, reported to media
The girl was unable to handle the fallout and hanged herself to death. The body of the grade 10 student was discovered by her sister.

Santa Claus is dishonest, says Turkish imam

Moscow, December 29: A Muslim cleric in Turkey has issued a warning to people from the community about Santa Claus, who he described as a “dishonest” person as he climbs down suspiciously through a chimney instead of coming in through the door.

Imam Suleiman Eniceri of Kuzan town, around 520 km from the capital city of Ankara, said it was “suspicious” that Santa Claus brings presents into a house by climbing down a chimney or through windows.

“If he was an honest person he would come through the door as we do,” Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper quoted the imam as saying.

Agra shivers but visitors throng Taj

Agra, December 29: Agra was the coldest city in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday but this did not deter tourists from thronging the Taj Mahal.

Despite chilly winds, Christmas and New Year holiday crowds continued to swell at the Taj, forcing authorities to deploy additional security personnel for frisking. Ticket sales crossed 35,000.

According to officials, Wednesday’s minimum was 2 degrees Celsius. For the third day in a row, Agra’s temperature was the lowest in the state. A further fall in night temperature is predicted.

Strengthen health care system, says CM

Hyderabad, December 29 (INN): Andhra Pradesh government has approved a new health policy to strengthen the health care system in the state.

Under the New Health Policy, Camp Office Counters will be opened at Tirupati, Warangal, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada apart from the existing Hyderabad Counter.

Health camps will be held by the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in each district at the rate of 30 camps per month and the doctors will be given incentive. Each PHC will get a financial support of Rs 6,000, according to an official release here on Wednesday.
