100,000 Britons cannot afford to eat

London, November 29: At least 100,000 British people are dependent upon food handouts, as they cannot afford to eat being hit hard by poverty and rising food prices.

A new food bank opens in Britain every week in order to deal with the increasing number of poverty-stricken people who have to rely on food parcels, the Sunday Express reported on Sunday.

The revelations come as a British Army veteran and his wife committed suicide earlier this month being tired of a “hand to mouth” life and walking ten miles to get food parcels from a soup kitchen.

RTC to regularise 5,982 contract staff

Hyderabad, November 29: The Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation has decided to regularise the services of about 6,000 contract employees working with the department.

According to Executive Director (HRD) GV Ramana Rao, the services of 2,755 drivers and 3,173 conductors working with the corporation as contract basis would be regularised. The services of these 5,982 contract employees would be regularised from December 1, he said.

HC to take up Rajiv killers’ petition today

Chennai, November 29: The Madras High Court, Tuesday, will take up of hearing the petitions by death row convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case seeking commutation of capital punishment.

On August 30, the court had stayed for eight weeks the execution of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan admitting their pleas for commuting their death sentence to life term.

Not allowed for Krishna event, passport staff strike work

New Delhi, November 29: A “sudden strike” by members of All India Passport Employees Association (AIPEA) on Monday left visitors to the Regional Passport Office in South Delhi in a lurch.

According to sources, the “immediate cause” of the strike “appeared” to be the two-day All India Regional Passport Officers conference to be held in the Capital starting Tuesday. “The members of AIPEA want to attend the conference, which will be inaugurated by the External Affairs Minister S M Krishna. We had not invited them, and thus, they went on a strike,” a senior official said.

US military to lead NATO raid probe

Washington, November 29: The US military will lead the probe into the cross-border attack by NATO forces that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, the defence department said Monday.

The probe will “look at the full range of factors that contributed to this tragedy and it will be broad, expansive and thorough”, the department’s press secretary George Little said, adding that the US Central Command (Centcom) will lead the investigation.

Ramdev ran away leaving supporters to face police: SC told

New Delhi, November 29: The midnight crackdown on Ramdev and his followers at the Ramlila ground during their protest against corruption was a result of ‘irresponsible’ behaviour of the yoga guru’s running away from the venue and leaving his supporters who resorted to unprovoked violence, Delhi Police told the Supreme Court.

“Ramdev Baba jumped down and left the stage, leaving it to a few of his supporters who started hurling stones towards the police,” advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the police, told a bench of justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar.

Salaries of MLAs, ministers hiked

New Delhi, November 29: Delhi MLAs and ministers will get nearly double the amount of their existing salary from this month. The Delhi assembly had passed an amendment bill in the winter session of the assembly in September effecting almost a two-fold hike in the salaries of MLAs and Ministers. The government has now notified the amendment bill.

The recommendations to hike the salaries were made by a House Committee and the bill was approved by the Union Home Ministry in July.

THE CBI arrested a senior IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh, Y. Srilakshmi, on Monday.

She was charged with helping mining tycoon and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy in the illegal mining of iron ore through his Obulapuram Mining Company ( OMC). The agency, however, spared state home minister Sabita Indra Reddy, who had signed the controversial file favouring OMC during her tenure as minister for mines when the scam took place.

Infosys woman manager hangs self

Bangalore, November 29: Infosys’ assistant manager and former woman journalist Smita Rao, 32, hanged herself at her home Monday due to alleged harassment by her husband Rohit, a software engineer working with the popular web search engine firm Google in this tech hub, a police official said.

“We have registered a harassment case against Rohit under sections 498A and 304B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and are investigating to ascertain what actually forced his wife Smita to commit suicide by hanging in her flat,” Hennur police inspector G Prabhakar said late Monday.

On Headley, US unwilling to share more info, says PC

New Delhi, November 29: Home Minister P Chidambaram today said India had asked the US about Lashkar-e-Toiba operative David Headley’s links to US state agencies, but Washington had not been “willing” to share that information.

Asked about former home secretary G K Pillai’s statement to the investigative journalism website ProPublica that the US knew more than it told India, Chidambaram said, “That’s true.”

No explosion in Isfahan: Iran official

Tehran, November 29: A top Iranian official has rejected media reports about an explosion being heard in the central city of Isfahan.

Mohammad-Mehdi Ismaili, Isfahan governor’s political and security deputy, said on Monday that report was completely baseless and fabricated, IRNA reported.

He added that the Isfahan governor would follow up on the report.

Ismaili made the remarks after certain media outlets reported that a powerful blast had been heard in Isfahan on Monday afternoon.

Father raping daughter for 34 yrs

German, November 29: A German pensioner accused of raping his daughter repeatedly over a 34-year-period and fathering three children with her went on trial in this southern city Monday.

The now 69-year-old defendant, Adolf Bergbauer, admitted sex with his daughter in testimony before the court but denied charges of rape. He said she consented.

Bergbauer has been charged with 497 counts of rape. Suspected cases earlier than 1991 have now passed the statute of limitations and are too old to consider.

Fresh UK-Saif Gaddafi links revealed

London, November 29: Fresh links between Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and the British government have emerged as it was revealed former Labour defence minister, Adam Ingram, gave him £100,000 in donations.

Argus Scotland, headed by Ingram, British defence minister from 2001 to 2007, gave a £100,000 donation to the Gadaffi International Charity and Development Foundation, revealed the Sunday Times in its 27 November edition.

The donation came around the same time Libya’s Organisation for the Development of Administrative Centres awarded the company with a multi-billion-pound contract.

Syria committed crimes against humanity: UN report

Geneva, November 29: A United Nations commission of inquiry said on Monday Syrian military and security forces had committed crimes against humanity including murder, torture and rape, and the government of President Bashar al-Assad bore responsibility.

The panel, which interviewed 223 victims and witnesses including defectors, called on Syria to halt “gross human rights violations,” release prisoners rounded up in mass arrests and allow access to media, aid workers and rights monitors.
