US fines airline $900,000 for tarmac delays

Washington, November 15: The US Department of Transportation fined American Eagle Airlines $900,000 for keeping 600 passengers waiting on the runway for more than three hours in 15 of its airliners as a result of flight delays at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

This was the first offense against the rule imposed by the federal government in April 2010 for tarmac delays of domestic flights.

No decision taken on second SRC

New Delhi, November 15: Gulam Nabi Azad, AICC General Secretary and AP affairs in charge has said that no decision has been taken on appointing the second States Reorganization Commission on Telangana.

He spoke to the media, after a meeting of the core committee at the residence of the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Monday evening. Mr.Azad said the Telangana issue came up for discussion in the core committee meeting.A decision on Telangan would be taken only after completing the consultations with UPA partners, he added.

KBC winner will be rural job scheme brand ambassador

New Delhi, November 15: Sushil Kumar, who won Rs.5 crore on the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati game show, will be the next brand ambassador of United Progressive Alliance’s (UPA) flagship project Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

This announcement was made here Monday by Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh.

“I had a meeting with Sushil Kumar and he will be the next ambassador of MGNERGS. He was a worker in MGNREGS and young men like him should be projected as the success of the scheme,” Ramesh said at a function here.

Higher power bills due to Ramadan demand: Dewa

Dubai, November 15: Dubai’s electricity authorities have played down public complaints about the recent sharp rise in water and power bills, saying the increase was a result of higher consumption during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said it had not raised tariff but that consumption was much higher during Ramadan, which also came in August, the hottest month of the year. It also said some areas were charged for 35 days instead of one month because of the post-Ramadan Eid holidays.

I am leaving Zardari league

Islamabad, November 15: Former Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has announced his resignation from the membership of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

“I am leaving the Zardari league,” DawnNews quoted Qureshi as saying at a press conference Monday.

He criticized Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and said the government failed to revive the country’s economy.

Qureshi also urged other lawmakers to resign from the parliament. He said the PPP, led by President Asif Ali Zardari, was losing its popularity in Sindh.

‘High-tech’ London creates 1,300 new jobs

London, November 15: The British capital is fast emerging as Europe’s leading digital city and a new technology hub dubbed “Tech City” has led to the creation of 1,300 new high-tech jobs, London Mayor Boris Johnson has said.

In one year of its creation, the number of companies in the Tech City has increased threefold. The Tech City, which celebrated its first anniversary Nov 10, is now home to 600 companies, said a British government statement.

London’s promotional agency London and Partners has also helped set up 130 new high- tech companies in the capital.

Malegaon blast: 7 accused may be released today

Mumbai, November 15: Seven of the nine accused in the Malegaon blast case are likely to be released on Tuesday after being in judicial custody for five years.

The MCOCA court has agreed to grant bail to the accused. However, the final report in the case by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is yet to be filed.

The accused were arrested for orchestrating blasts in 2006 which claimed 31 lives.

All of them were booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Saleh says ready to step down in 90 days

Sanaa, November 15: Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Monday he was ready to step down within 90 days of reaching a deal on a formal process for implementing a Gulf initiative aimed at ending the nine-month-old crisis in his country.

Saleh, who has so far refused to sign the accord proposed by the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council in April, told France’s Channel 24 television in an interview that he had given his deputy, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, authority to negotiate a deal with the opposition.

Petrol prices likely to come down by Rs 2

New Delhi, November 15: In what comes as a major relief for the ‘Aam Aadmi’, the petrol prices are likely to be brought down by Rs 2.

According to sources in the Oil Ministry, though the cut down cannot be termed as a rollback, it is the government that has suggested the reduction in the prices.

The sources further said that the slashing of the prices would be a political decision, adding that the concerns of the oil companies need to be addressed.

Speaker summons Gampa over resignation

Hyderabad, November 15: Kamareddy MLA Gampa Goverdhan has been summoned by Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar in connection with the resignation that the former has submitted from the MLA’s post after he quit Telugu Desam Party to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

Govardhan has been asked to appear before the Speaker at 3 pm on Tuesday. Sources say that Assembly Secretary Raja Sadaram telephoned Govardhan asking him to give clarification and verify that he has submitted the resignation from the Kamareddy seat.

Israel not to release Palestinians’ taxes

Jerusalem, November 15: Israel has said it will hold on the transfer of Palestinian tax collections as punishment for the Palestinian Authority (PA)’s successful membership admission to UNESCO.

Kolkata, November 15: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam today downplayed his frisking by US security officials at New York’s JFK Airport, saying it was not worth talking about.

“Forget about it. It is not worth talking about,” Kalam said while responding to a question on the sidelines of an IIMC event here.

80-year-old Kalam was twice frisked at the JFK Airport by security officials who even took off his jacket and shoes to check for explosives before he was to board an Air India flight on September 29.

Gali’s judicial custody extended till Nov 28

Hyderabad, November 15: The Special CBI Court on Monday extended the custody of former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law and Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy to November 28.

The proceedings were conducted through video conference from the Chanchalguda Central Prison. When both the accused were brought to the hall for video-conferencing, Gali broke down and claimed that he was innocent and honest.

No plans to form second SRC, claims Purandreshwari

Visakhapatnam, November 15: Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Daggubati Purandeswari on Monday claimed that the Centre was not considering the constitution of second States Reorganisations Commission.

Talking to media persons after participating in a Children’s Day programme, Purandeswari described the media reports on formation of second SRC as speculative and far from truth. She said that there was no truth in the media reports that the Centre was mulling to set up SRC in the wake of demand for smaller states arising in some parts of the country.

Cash-for-votes: Court reserves order

New Delhi, November 14: The Delhi High Court on Monday reserved till November 16 its order on the bail plea of Sudheendra Kulkarni, advisor to BJP veteran LK Advani, and four other accused in the 2008 cash-for-votes scam that rocked Parliament ahead of a trust vote.

Ahead of the court ruling, the Delhi Police said that it would not oppose the bail petitions of five jailed accused in the case, including two former BJP MPs and LK Advani’s former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni, besides the anticipatory bail plea of a party MP in the Delhi High Court.

Kejriwal meets Muslim clerics to shrug off RSS tag

Lucknow, November 14: Apparently to shrug off the tag of being backed by RSS and BJP, key Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal on Monday met senior Muslim clerics and leaders including vice-president of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq.

7 dead in gas explosion at restaurant in NW China

Beijing, November 14: An explosion in a restaurant killed at least seven people Monday and injured another 31 in a city in North Western China, state media said.

The explosion happened at the start of the morning rush hour in a fast food restaurant in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, according to a report on the website of the Xi’an Daily.

The website and the official Xinhua News Agency said the blast was likely caused by a natural gas leak. The explosion knocked windows out as far a mile (about two kilometres) away.

New Delhi, November 14: One day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Omar Abdullah’s demand for partial withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir needed to be objectively discussed by all players, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister met Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony here.

Mr. Abdullah used a post on micro-blogging site Twitter to confirm the meeting on Sunday. “Yes, I have just finished meeting the Defence Minister & no, I don’t intend to speak to the media for the time being,” said his Tweet.
