TRS MLAs to undertake padyatra

Hyderabad, November 16: In an attempt to rejuvenate the Telangana agitation for a separate state, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLAs will be undertaking padyatras in all districts starting Wednesday. The padyatras are slated to continue till November 21.

This comes days after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that a decision on Telangana would be taken on the basis of consensus and nothing would be done in a hurry to avoid any trouble.

‘US making empty threats against Iran’

Tehran, November 16: A senior Iranian commander has downplayed the US war rhetoric against the country, saying Washington is too weak to venture a war against the Islamic Republic.

“The US claims [plans] to [want to] attack the Islamic Republic [this is] while it has been three years since its economic meltdown and it is facing the uprising of the poor in the Wall Street,” Commander of Iran’s Basij Force Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Naqdi said on Tuesday, Fars News Agency reported.

Facebook targeted with porn, violent images

London, November 16: Facebook users on Tuesday were assaulted by a wave of pornographic and violent images, pushed into their accounts as content supposedly liked or recommended by their friends.

The images included doctored photos of pop singer Justin Bieber and other celebrities in demeaning poses. Other images depicted extreme violence and abused animals.

Facebook members complained and described the images in Twitter posts all morning. By midafternoon Eastern time, Facebook indicated it had the attack under control.

Syria boycotts Arab meeting today

Amman, November 16: Syria will boycott an Arab League meeting to follow up its decision to suspend Damascus from the organization, as regional states stepped up efforts to isolate President Bashar al-Assad for refusing to end a crackdown on eight months of protests.

The meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Rabat on Wednesday comes four days after they decided to discipline Syria for pursuing the crackdown instead of implementing an Arab peace initiative.

The League has stopped short of calling for Assad’s departure or proposing any Libya-style military intervention.

Mumbai, November 16: Bollywood’s light-eyed beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was admitted to Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai on Monday for the birth of her firstborn, has finally delivered a baby girl on Wednesday.

Abhishek Bachchan broke the news to the world on Twitter as he tweeted: ‘IT’S A GIRL!!!!!! :-)))))’.

Security was tightened after Aishwarya was admitted to the hospital on Monday. Talking to a daily, a source said, “There was tighter than usual security on Tuesday and a crowd had assembled outside the hospital to get news of the junior-most Bachchan`s arrival.”

‘UK keeps Military option on Iran open’

London, November 16: UK Foreign Secretary has warned of military action against Iran as Britain’s peace activists call for removing anti-Iranian sanctions and a halt to the war rhetoric on Iran.

Speaking to reporters ahead of European Union Foreign Ministers’ meeting, William Hague announced that the British government has not ruled out the possibility of military action against Iran in the long term, reported the Daily Telegraph on Monday.

16 YO raped by Indo-American Cancer Hospital supervisor

Hyderabad, November 16: A minor girl working as a housekeeping staff at a private hospital in the city was allegedly raped by her supervisor.

The incident came to light after the victim’s mother found out that the girl was pregnant and lodged a complaint with the Banjara Hills police on Tuesday.

The accused is 40-year-old Srisailam, who is working as a house keeping staff supervisor at Indo American Cancer hospital in Banjara Hills.

12 T-MPs resignation rejected by Speaker

Hyderabad, November 16: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Tuesday rejected the resignations of MPs from Telangana region, including eight from the Congress and that of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Parliament sources said.

The resignations were “not accepted” by the Speaker as they were not in proper format, the sources said. The MPs include eight from the Congress and two each from TRS and TDP. The MPs had resigned in July to press for their demand for a separate state of Telangana.

Muslim marriage not a civil contract

New Delhi, November 16: Hearing a petition by a man seeking a judicial order for restitution of his conjugal rights after his “wife” deserted him under the pressure of her parents, a Delhi court has held that a marriage between two Muslims cannot be considered a civil contract.

Differing from Mulla’s Principles of Mohammedan Law that defines a nikah as a contract, Additional District Judge (ADJ) Rajender Kumar Shastri said a marriage could not be treated like a contract between two parties since it had several aspects alien to a formal agreement.

Pak to open its market for Indian goods

New Delhi, November 16: In a clear signal of thaw in bilateral ties, Pakistan on Tuesday agreed to open its market for over 7,000 items from India in the next three months and promised to grant New Delhi crucial MFN status by 2012 end.

At the end of two-day talks between commerce secretaries of the two countries in New Delhi, Islamabad agreed to widen market access for Indian goods by moving from a Positive List (PL) to Negative List (NL) trade regime by February 2012.

Anti-Muslim ‘hate crimes’ up 50 % in US

Washington, November 16: So-called “hate crimes” against Muslims rose nearly 50 percent in the United States in 2010, according to FBI statistics released Monday.

The figures, part of a report on hate crimes, showed actions motivated by anti-Muslim prejudice rose to 160 in 2010 from 107 the prior year.

Anti-Jewish crimes were down from the previous year at 887 incidents from 931 the previous year. The number of crimes motivated by anti-Catholic sentiment rose to 58 last year, from 51 in 2009.

Cash-for-votes: Will Kulkarni, others walk free?

New Delhi, November 16: The Delhi High Court will on Wednesday give its order on the bail plea of Sudheendra Kulkarni, advisor to Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he was prime minister, and four other accused in the 2008 cash-for-votes scam that had rocked Parliament ahead of a trust vote.

On Monday, the HC had reserved its order.

The bail applications had been filed in the court of Justice ML Mehta by Kulkarni, former aide of MP Amar Singh Sanjeev Saxena, political activist Suhail Hindustani, and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahabir Singh Bhagora.

Muslim youths tortured after Modi’s call to release the detained tourists

Malegaon accused likely to be released today

Mumbai, November 16: After spending nearly five years in jail, seven of the nine accused in the 2006 Malegaon blasts that killed 37 people are expected to be released from prison on Wednesday.

Their release was expected on Tuesday but the same did not happen.

The release would come days after a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) special court granted bail to all nine accused in the case, after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) decided not to oppose their pleas.
