Kambli has showed his class : Azharuddin

New Delhi, November 18:Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin Friday rubbished his ex-team mate Vinod Kambli’s allegations that the 1996 World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata was fixed.

Azharuddin, now a Congress MP from Moradabad, said the decision to chase was a collective decision and the team took the blame for the loss against eventual champions Sri Lanka.

A third of AP highways are unfit for motoring

Hyderabad, November 18: A third of the 70,394 km roads in the state have become unfit for motoring following their damage in recent cyclones and floods.

Lack of or insufficient funds is hampering repairing and re-carpeting as the government has released only Rs 500 crore to Rs 600 crore over the past six years against the requirement of Rs 1,200 crore.

The roads and buildings department has been facing fund crunch for the past six years.

Due to floods, cyclones and north, south and western monsoons, roads of a length of 23,000 km were damaged last year.

Scavenger molests 7-year old school girl

Hyderabad, November 18: A scavenger working in a private school at Bairamalguda was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molested a girl studying in class II, when the latter went to the wash room on Wednesday.

Infuriated over the incident, parents of the student and locals thrashed the accused and damaged school furniture leading to tension in the locality.

According to Saroornagar police, the seven-year-old girl went to the wash room in school premises on Wedenesday around 1.30 p.m.

Hyderabad, November 18: The special CBI court dismissed bail petitions of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law B V Srinivas Reddy, key accused in the OMC illegal mining case.

The Magistrate B Naga Maruthi Sharma dismissed petitions filed by Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law BV Srinivas Reddy seeking bail on the grounds the investigation is in a crucial stage.

The CBI counsel had stated illegal mining took place under the Obulapuram Mining Company.

Cairo, November 18: A woman activist who posted nude pictures of herself on her blog to protest limits on free expression has triggered an uproar in Egypt, drawing condemnations from conservatives and liberals alike.

Some liberals feared that the posting by 20-year-old university student Aliaa Magda Elmahdy would taint them ahead of November 28 parliamentary elections.

Nudity is strongly frowned upon in Egyptian society, even as an art form.

Man gets life term for killing girl by acid

New Delhi, November 18: A middle-aged man, who is a father of four, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for “cowardly” act of killing a girl by throwing acid on her after she spurned his sexual advances.

Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Tiwari imposed the stern sentence on Uttar Pradesh native Subhash Chander, noting that even if the acid attack victim had survived, she would have been akin to a corpse with extensive acid burns all over her body.

SC Denies Relief To IPS Officer Sanjiv Bhatt In Custodial Death Case

New Delhi, November 18: The Supreme Court today refused to quash proceedings against suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in a 21-year-old alleged custodial death case.

A bench of justices B S Chauhan and T S Thakur refused to grant any relief to the Gujarat-cadre officer against the state high court’s order, which had dismissed his plea for quashing of criminal proceedings related to the case pending against him in a Jamnagar court.

Talwars in SC today

New Delhi, November 18: The Supreme Court will take up a plea by Dr Rajesh Talwar and his wife Nupur, parents of murdered teenager Aarushi, challenging proceedings against them by a trial court.

The Talwars were named the prime accused in the murder of 15-year-old daughter in Noida in 2008.

The apex court will decide whether the magistrate was competent to take cognizance making them accused in the case.

The court, in March 2011, stayed criminal trial of the dentist couple for the murder of their daughter and domestic help Hemraj.
