Result in home series won’t matter in India, says Alastair Cook

Hyderabad, October 05: England captain Alastair Cook feels the convincing win over India back home last month will not mean much when they face the World Champions in their own backyard.

The visitors don’t consider themselves favourites and are looking forward to what he described as a “very different challenge”.

“I don’t know too much about the favourites or anything like that. We know it is going to be a very different challenge. I don’t see any relation between what happened in England and what is going to happen here in India,” Cook said at a press conference here Wednesday.

Fitness more important than size zero: Gul Panag

Mumbai, October 05: Former beauty queen and actress Gul Panag, who feels Bipasha Basu and Akshay Kumar are Bollywood’s fitness icons, says girls should stop running behind size zero and simply focus on being fit.

“I don’t understand the relationship between size zero and a fit body. Fitness is that if your car breaks down and you can easily walk four to five km without tiring out, or if you can pick a heavy bag without complaining about your back … fitness is not necessarily about being skinny,” Gul told reporters here.

The 32-year-old also gave out some fitness tips.

Leader of Haqqani network killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, October 05: A senior leader of the militant Haqqani network was killed in a NATO air strike in eastern Afghanistan, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

Dilawar and two of his associates were killed in Musa Khel district of Khost province Tuesday. He was a close aide of Haji Mali Khan, the head of the network in Afghanistan, who was captured a week ago from neighbouring Paktia province.

The network, an ally of the Taliban, was founded by Mawlawi Jalaludin Haqqani and is led by his son Sirajudin Haqqani. The group has been fighting against Afghan and NATO-led troops.

Mumbai on high alert ahead of Sena rally

Mumbai, October 05: Mumbai was put on high alert for Thursday’s Dussehra celebration after police received intelligence input of a possible terror strike. The Mumbai police will maintain vigil all over the city, particularly the Shivaji Park ground where a political rally will be held on Thursday.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, his son Uddhav and Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athavale will address the rally on Thursday. Intelligence agencies warned that terrorist or anti-social elements could strike to disrupt peace.

Advani yatra to cover 100 districts

New Delhi, October 05: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani will cover 100 districts across the country during his anti-corruption yatra beginning Oct 12.

BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar said the yatra will start every day at 10 a.m. and go on till 10 p.m., covering 250-300 km a day.

“Advani will use a modified bus equipped with power lift (sky lift) that will also serve as dais. Every day, he will address three-four rallies and several nukkad (street) meetings,” Kumar told reporters.

Al-Rajhi is richest Saudi family; Al-Saud second

Riyadh, October 05: Al-Rajhi is the richest family in Saudi Arabia, controlling nearly SR46.3 billion ($12.3 billion) at the end of September and far outpacing the ruling Al-Saud family, newspapers in the Gulf Kingdom said on Wednesday.

Al-Saud’s wealth was put at around SR32.9 billion ($8.7 billion) at the end of September to maintain its position as the second richest families in the world’s dominant oil power, the report showed.

Boy kills girlfriend, commits suicide

Azamgarh, october 05: A youth today allegedly shot dead his girlfriend and later committed suicide in Gaurideeh Aiama village under Sidhari police station area here, police said.

Taubab (20) was in a relationship with Darafta (17). He shot dead the girl this morning before shooting himself dead, they said.

A case has been registered and the bodies have been sent for post mortem examination, the police said.

Police placate diplomat who attacks cop

Islamabad, October 05: A Pakistani policeman assaulted by a Polish diplomat here watched in shock as his seniors served tea and snacks to his attacker in a bid to calm him down.

The bizarre incident took place when the diplomat beat up a traffic policeman who had asked him for his car documents to issue him a ticket in a busy Islamabad district, The Dawn reported Wednesday.

Police sources said their colleague Mohammad Ishaq asked Gerzy Bogusz, deputy defence attache at the Polish embassy, not to park in a no-parking zone. His car had a local license number plate.

New Delhi, October 05: Southern beauty Asin Thottumkal, who has worked with Salman Khan in “London Dreams” and “Ready”, says she admires and respects the actor but has never desired him.

Motor mechanic injured in police beating

Hyderabad, October 5: Meerchowk police on Tuesday allegedly assaulted a motor mechanic Mohammad Ahmed Ali (50) later they admitted him to Osmania hospital and fled. Talking to press persons at Osmania hospital, Ahmed Ali’s wife Sabiha Begum told that her husband went to work in the morning he was washing his hands at a hotel opposite to Imliban bus station after having breakfast. Remorseful lone child commits suicide

Hyderabad, October 5: A 14 year old boy who forced his mother to leave the house commits suicide. The incident occurred under Habeeb nagar police station limits last night. According to inspector Habeebnagar V Venkateshwar Rao Niketan who was a student of 9th standard hanged himself to death at his house. Niketan was the single child of Shivram Singh resident of Seetaram Bagh he had misbehaved and beat his mother on which his mother went to her mother’s house. NCP legislator jailed six months for assault

Panaji, October 05: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco was Wednesday jailed for six months after a court rejected his bail application in an assault case.

Kapil Natekar, a junior engineer employed with the electricity department, had in 2006 filed a complaint against Pacheco after the latter assaulted him in his office following an argument.

The former tourism minister was convicted by a trial court earlier this year and had appealed against this before the district and sessions court in Margao, 30 km from here.

Three of a family murdered, one arrested

Hyderabad, October 5 (Siasat News): Rajendranagar police has arrested a man who was involved in the murder of three persons of the same family just three days back.

As per the details, on October 1, the dead bodies of Geetha, 35 and her 13-year-old son Chandu’s body was recovered from Maikamma Nagar in Rajendranagar. As the bodies were highly decomposed, the foul smell coming out of the house alerted the neighbours.

Over 19,000 Indians arrive in Saudi Arabia for Haj

Jeddah, October 05: Over 19,000 Indian Haj pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage.

According to a release of the Consulate General of India here, a total of 19,549 pilgrims have arrived from India, of them 2,626 are in Makkah and 16,549 pilgrims are in Madina.

So far, 70 Haj flights have come from India.

Meanwhile, the first death of a Haj pilgrim has been reported from Madina. He has been identified as Farooqui Husain,70, son of Hafiz Anwar Husain Khan.

The Haj to Makkah, the holiest city for Muslims, at least once a lifetime, is obligatory in Islam.

No discrimination against women: Zardari

Islamabad, October 05: Pakistan is committed to ending discriminatory practices against women, President Asif Ali Zardari has said.

In a message on World Teachers Day Oct 5, the president said his government valued the importance of women, particularly in the education sector.

“Women empowerment and gender equality is all about human rights that lie at the heart of development,” the Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Zardari as saying.

“Efforts for gender equality is the key to improve economic, political and social conditions in the country,” he said.
