London, October 07: Actress Salma Hayek, married to French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, loves being financially independent.

“I work hard, I make my own living and I love it. I like having financial independence. I don’t ever want to have to depend on anyone completely,” contactmusic.com quoted the 45-year-old as saying.

“But when I have troubles sometimes, it’s nice to have someone there to help,” said the actress, who has a four-year-old daughter with Pinault.

Order on remand revision plea adjourned till Oct. 10

Ahmedabad, October 07: A local court on Friday adjourned the pronouncement of order on the maintainability of the remand revision application filed by the Gujarat government seeking custody of arrested IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, till October 10.

Principal Session judge G.N. Patel said he was unable to complete the order and it would now be pronounced on Monday.

Smart cards for Haj pilgrims

Makkah, October 07: Every pilgrim, on arrival at any of the Kingdom’s airports, seaports or border posts, will receive a digital smart card with all information of the pilgrim saved on it, the Cars General Syndicate told Okaz/Saudi Gazette Thursday.

A digital map service will also be launched to monitor buses on the Internet and detect technical glitches, breakdowns, and if buses are abiding by the routes assigned to them. This is to keep a check on the performance of 17 transport companies that are providing 19,000 buses during this Haj season.

The French Loaf, the country’s largest bakery chain, today unveiled India’s longest eggless, chocolate cake, which was created for a noble cause.

The cake measures 333 ft and is reckoned to be the longest in the world.

Washington, October 07: A US grandmother was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday and sentenced to 35 years in prison for tossing her 2-year-old granddaughter from a pedestrian bridge at a shopping mall.

The jury rejected Carmela dela Rosa’s insanity defense. Prosecutors said she threw Angelyn Ogdoc off a 45-foot-high skywalk like a “piece of trash” last November because she was angry at her son-in-law for getting her daughter pregnant out of wedlock.

Assets of rich Saudi families decline by 12%

Riyadh, October 07: There has been a fall of 12 per cent in the wealth of 14 Saudi rich families during the first three quarters of the current year.

The overall value of their assets fell to 98.4 billion Saudi riyals from 111.5 billion riyals during the period between January 1 and September 29, 2011, according to the latest figures released by Al Joman Centre for Economic Consultancy.

The Al Rajhi family is the Kingdom’s wealthiest non-royals.

Muslim woman removed from airplane sues

San Diego, October 07: A Muslim-American woman who was removed from a plane in San Diego last spring sued Southwest Airlines on Thursday, alleging she was discriminated against because she was wearing a head cover.

Irum Abbasi, a psychology graduate student at San Jose State University who is a US citizen, filed the lawsuit in federal court in San Diego, said her lawyer James McElroy.

Abbasi, a mother of three, was taken off the San Jose-bound flight in March as it was about to depart after a flight attendant thought she heard her say “it’s a go” on her cellphone.

Washington, October 07: A group of religious castoffs has been attacking fellow Amish, cutting off their hair and beards in an apparent feud over spiritual differences in the deeply traditional community, a sheriff said.

Members of a group of families disavowed by mainstream Amish have cut the beards off men and the hair off a half-dozen or more men and women, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said. He said the cutting apparently was meant to be degrading.

She was the daughter of one Elliah. When she realized that his year she won’t get the new clothes on Dassera, she took the extreme step of committing suicide by consuming pesticides.

17 Dussehra revellers killed in accident

Koraput, October 07: At least 17 people were killed and 15 others injured when a tipper truck carrying Dussehra revellers overturned near Dasamantapur in Orissa’s Koraput district today.

Superintendent of Police Anoop Sahu said the accident occurred when around 40 people were returning home this morning in the tipper after watching a ‘jatra’ (folk theatre) in a nearby village.

The victims, including women and children, were crushed beneath the vehicle after it overturned and local people had to pull out the victims, Sahu said.

Quake hits Argentina

Buenos Aires, October 07: A 6.2-magnitude temblor Thursday jolted northern Argentina but there was no report of damage or casualties media reported.

The quake took place at 8.12 a.m., and its epicentre was located at 24.1812 degrees south latitude and 64.2501 degrees west longitude, about 130 km from the city of Salta, the National Institute of Seismic Prevention said.

The tremor was felt in the northern provinces of Jujuy, Tucuman and Santiago del Estero.
