Nagpur, October 08: A Vidarbha farmer’s widow, who recently won Rs.640,000 on quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC), has asked United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi to save her from her harassing in-laws, or else she would commit suicide.

In a letter to Gandhi, Aparna Malikar, 27, narrates how she is subjected to severe mental harassment and injustice after her husband committed suicide in 2008 due to crop failure, leaving behind a huge debt.

Techie, wife commit suicide after ‘happy life together’

Panaji, October 08: A 39-year-old techie working for a Florida-based company and his wife hanged themselves in their flat here, saying they were committing suicide because they had “lived a very eventful and happy life together”, police said Saturday.

Police had to break down the door of their flat at Merces on the outskirts of Panaji after neighbours noticed stench emanating from the house. The couple hanged themselves Thursday from two nooses suspended from a ceiling hook, police said.

Whole town evacuated after train accident leads to fire

Tiskilwa, October 08: A freight train loaded with ethanol crashed and exploded Friday, sending up bright orange flames and plumes of smoke that could be seen miles away and forcing the evacuation of a small town in northern Illinois.

Capt. Steve Haywood of the Ottawa Fire Department said the train’s tanker cars were shipping ethanol for Decatur-based corn processor Archer Daniels Midland, and possibly other materials and chemicals, when it crashed and derailed. At least six tanker cars burned, he said.

Two-day-old baby girl rescued after being buried alive

Bhopal, October 08: A farmer was at work in the afternoon on Thursday when he heard a baby crying. He followed the sound to discover a baby girl, who seemed to have been buried alive. She had managed to push her head above the ground.

The farmer, who is from Madhya Pradesh’s Bodna village, rushed the child to a local hospital. Doctors believe she was 48 hours old before she was rescued.

She is now recovering well.

Rabbis stand in solidarity with burned mosque

Washington, October 08: More than a thousand rabbis from around the world have signed a statement denouncing the burning of an Israeli mosque as police arrested a suspect who is alleged to be a Jewish extremist.

“We condemn those in Israel who exacerbate conflict and strife, and who insist that only one people or religion belongs to this land,” said the statement, which organizers say was overwhelmingly signed by U.S. rabbis.

Nobel prize for mother of Arab Spring

Oslo, October 08: Yemeni Tawakkul Karman, one of three women awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Friday, said she had dedicated her unexpected win to all activists of the Arab Spring.

“I dedicate it to all the activists of the Arab Spring,” Karman told Al-Arabiya Television, refering to protesters who took to the streets in several Arab countries demanding democracy.

“I am very happy. I didn’t expect this at all,” she said, adding that “the project for freedom and dignity has become a reality.”

Man kills self for Telangana?

Hyderabad, October 08: A 57-year-old man committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan at his residence in Srishanti Nagar at Jilelguda.

According to Meerpet police, the deceased – V Ram Sharma took the extreme step on Thursday night. Police also found a suicide note in which Sharma said he was ending his life due to ‘insult and pain’. Initially, police suspected that Sharma might have committed suicide due to financial problems. However, they were not very certain as in the suicide note, he requested that his last rites should be performed by Telangana activists.

Hyderabad, October 08: Several international athletes will be seen in action in the Hyderabad Heritage Marathon, which will be held on Sunday.

The prize money tournament, which has Rs 12 lakh that is up for grabs, will be under the joint auspices of Hyderabad 10K Run Foundation and the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department.

Hyderabad, October 08: Mohammed Siraj of Riyasathnagar in the Old City went to a local moneylender seeking Rs 10,000 as he had to organize chhilla, the 40day ceremony of his sixth child, and pay fee for his eldest daughter to get enrolled in a junior college. The moneylender promptly handed him Rs 9000, after deducting installment for 10 days in advance. The interest: Rs 100 per day!

While Siraj had to shell out 30 per cent additional amount as interest, the loan had to be cleared in four months. Any late payment would attract added interest.

Doctor thrown from terrace for dowry

Jaipur, October 08: A city-based doctor told the police that her husband had pushed her from the terrace after forcing her to write a suicide note. A dowry harassment case has been registered against the accused husband, Dr Jayesh Sharma, and his parents by father of Dr Swati Sharma, 25, on Thursday evening. The statement of the victim was recorded on Friday.

“She told us that her in-laws and husband forced her to write a suicide note and later pushed her from the terrace. The accused have, however, been absconding since the incident,” said a police officer at Mahesh Nagar police station.
