Hussainsagar to come for a price

Hyderabad, September 02: Every drop of water from the Hussainsagar will soon command a price as the Hyderabad Metropo-litan Development Autho-rity wants to be paid for water drawn from the lake once it starts releasing treated water into it.

Officials said the cost of treating the waters work-ed out to Rs 7 per kilo litre. The lake water would thus be costlier than the potable water being supplied — although at a highly subsidised rate of `6 per KL — to by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sew-erage Board.

11,400 students allotted B.Tech seats

Hyderabad, September 02: About 11,740 students who were allotted B.Tech seats in the recently concluded first phase of Eamcet counselling have not reported at their respective colleges within the specified date.

With this, the vacant seats in engineering colleges after the first phase of counselling have gone up to to 70,002 seats in the convenor quota alone.

This has come as a shock to the managements of engineering colleges, which are already reeling under large-scale vacancies.

Gaddafi beats drums of war on fighters

Tripoli, September 02: Libya’s fugitive dictator Muammar Gaddafi has called on his supporters to launch guerrilla warfare against the opposition fighters, speaking in an audio message surfaced recently.

“Prepare yourselves for a gang and guerrilla war, for urban warfare and popular resistance in every town…to defeat the enemy everywhere,” he said in the message aired on Thursday, AFP reported.

“The aim is to kill the enemy wherever he may be, whether he be Libyan or foreign,” he added.

Gaddafi vows not to surrender

Tripoli, September 02: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has once again vowed in an audio message broadcast on television that he would not surrender. He urged his loyalists to continue their resistance to the rebellion.

‘We are not weak women. We are not slaves. We can not give up. We can not surrender,’ Gaddafi said in the message broadcast on Syria’s media.

‘Let this be a long fight and let Libya be engulfed in flames,’ he said.

Gaddafi called on his supporters in the capital Tripoli to fight back and ‘set ambushes’ against the ‘collaborators’ of NATO.

100 prisoners killed during Egypt protest

Cairo, September 02: At least 100 people held in Egypt’s prisons were killed during the 18 days of protests that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak’s government in February, an Egyptian human rights group has said.

“More than 100 prisoners were killed and hundreds hurt at only five prisons,” the report by Cairo-based Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) said.

The report described the deaths recorded between Jan 29 and Feb 20 as “deliberate”.

Apex court reserves verdict on Pragya Thakur’s bail plea

New Delhi, September 02: The Supreme Court Thursday reserved its verdict on a petition by Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur seeking bail in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast in Maharashtra which six people were killed and over hundred injured.

The apex court bench of Justice J.M. Panchal and Justice H.L. Gokhale reserved the order on the conclusion of the arguments wherein senior counsel Mahesh Jethmalani sought the release of Thakur on bail.

Suspected thief dies of electrocution

Hyderabad, September 02: An unidentified person died of electrocution while trying to trespass into an agricultural farm in the limits of Ghatkesar police station here on Thursday.

However, police suspect that the man, aged between 30 and 35 years, died of electrocution at the Dharam Reddy Agriculture Farm in Pocharam village. Since police found over 15 water taps from his possession, they suspect that he might have tried to trespass into the farm for theft. But due to electrical fencing, he could not crossover and died of electrocution.

Mother gets son killed to keep affair under wraps

New Delhi, September 02:A woman has been arrested allegedly for getting two contract killers to murder her son to hide her extra-marital affair, police said Thursday.

Twenty-year-old Manjeet was kidnapped from Najafgarh in Delhi, where he resided, before being killed in the Sangur district of Punjab in January this year.

The matter came to light when the contract killers, arrested Aug 31 for robbery, confessed to their other crimes, including Manjeet’s murder.

New Delhi, September 02: With the resignation of Justice Soumitra Sen – against whom the Rajya Sabha has passed an impeachment resolution – throwing up new legal issues, the final decision will be taken by the president and the Lok Sabha speaker, constitutional experts said.
