Trigger happy police kills 5 Dalits

Chennai,September 12 :Five persons were killed and 30 others injured when the trigger happy police opened fire on a stone-pelting mob at Paramakudi about 35 km from Ramanathapuram on Sunday.

Paramakudi town, which drew a large number of people, particularly Dalits, to pay homage to their leader Immanuel Sekaran on the occasion of his 54th death anniversary, turned into a battlefield between the agitators and the police personnel. Scores of policemen were injured and a number of government vehicles including a riot control vehicle and fire tenders torched down by the agitators.

Israel warned against ‘testing’ Turkey

Ankara, September 11: Turkey has censured Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman for his remarks that Tel Aviv will “punish” Ankara by supporting its enemies.

Speaking in Istanbul on Sunday during a joint press conference with his Brazilian counterpart Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, “No one can harm Turkey. No one should put Turkey’s strength to the test,” the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

He added, “No one will be able to blackmail us.”

6.0-magnitude quake strikes off Vanuatu

Sydney, Septeber 12: A shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami warning issued. The quake struck at a depth of just one kilometre, around 61 kilometres southwest of the capital Port Vila.

“It was very shallow and produced a lot of surface water activity, but no tsunami,” said a GeoScience Australia seismologist, adding that it would have been felt in Port Vila but damage was unlikely unless structures were weak.

Teacher held for child-rape kills self

Thailand, September 12: Phayonsak Udom, 58, a former teacher at Ban Nayang School in Sop Prap district, was reportedly a suspect in the rape of a girl and fled the province to avoid a subpoena.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old female student, police said.

He was arrested at an apartment in Pathum Thani province and later remanded in custody at Thoen police station in Lampang.

Police said Phayonsak used a blanket to hang himself inside the prison.

Delhi HC blast: NIA puts mobile firms on notice

New Delhi, September 12: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has served formal notices to at least two mobile telephony service providers, asking them to give details of numbers from which three emails were sent to the media and Delhi Police, claiming responsibility for the Delhi high court blast.

The NIA informed them that if they failed to do so, they would be liable for prosecution.

3 youths jailed for 10 years for raping teen

New Delhi, September 12: Three youths have been sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment by a Delhi court for gangraping a 19-year-old girl at knife point.

District judge P S Teji sentenced East Delhi residents Nesar (20), Sunny (22) and Mukesh (20) after convicting them for raping the girl in a slum while she was on her way back to home from work.

US will never forget Flight 93: George Bush

Washington, September 12: Former President George W Bush on Saturday promised that the nation would never forget the heroism of the 40 passengers and crew killed in the crash of hijacked United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

Many students have stopped attending because they feel unsafe, says the report titled “No Excuses: A Review of Educational Exclusion” by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith’s think tank Centre for Social Justice.

Seven Andhra Pradesh villages hit by flood

Guntur, September 12: Seven villages in the district are severely hit by floods, as Krishna river’s rising water level has not only damaged crops, but also displaced many a villager.

Seven Villages located near the Pulichinthala project on river Krishna in Guntur district is affected due to heavy rains and subsequent flooding.

According to sources, crop on 5,000 acres of land, is completely submerged in water. Villagers have taken refuge on the hillocks.

Team of National Disaster Response Force (NDFC) as well as district administration are carrying out relief work.

Afghan war cheaper than another 9/11

Washington, September 12: US Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker has justified the skyrocketing costs of Washington’s Afghan war by insisting that the military measure is cheaper than another 9/11 incident.

“I know people are tired of this war (in Afghanistan)….but if we think the war is expensive-and it is-it is a lot cheaper than another 9/11,” Crocker said in an interview with US’s National Public Radio.

Crocker claimed that Afghanistan is “where 9/11 came from,” adding that the al-Qaeda have been cleared from the Asian country due to presence of US forces.

NTR’s actor son ready to contest elections

Hyderabad, September 12: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister NT Rama Rao’s son and popular Telugu film actor N Balakrishna on Sunday confirmed he would contest the next Assembly elections.

Balakrishna would play an active role in the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founded by NTR.

“I will do my best to strengthen the party in the state,” Balakrishna told reporters at Anantapur, 350 km here.

But Balakrishna has not yet decided the assembly constituency he would contest from. He, however, clarified that he has no plans to become the chief minister.

Pakistan observes 63rd death anniversary of Mohammad Ali Jinnah

Islamabad, September 12: Pakistan Sunday observed the 63rd death anniversary of the father of the nation Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

People from all walks of life visited his mausoleum in Karachi to lay wreaths and offer Fateha (prayer). Prayers were also held in mosques across the country.

I Quit : Court Martialled IAF Lady Officer Anjali Gupta Commits Suicide

Bhopal, September 12: The first female officer in the Indian Air Force who was court-martialled Flying Officer Anjali Gupta committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan here today.

A military court has found her guilty of indiscipline and embezzlement.

Anjali Gupta had alleged that her superiors  tried to sexually harass her.

Anjali, the second of three daughters in her family, was posted as an administration in-charge—a ground duty post—at the Indian Air Force’s Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment in Bangalore.
