Mumbai airport could be targeted, warn intelligence agencies

Mumbai, September 13: Major airports in the country have been put on high alert on the third anniversary of the September 13, 2008 blasts, sources told.

Security has been enhanced at the Mumbai Airport and Delhi airports. Delhi was on high alert following the recent blast outside the high court. Security has been further tightened in Delhi after email threatening malls in the city. Police have strengthened security at shopping malls by deploying more personnel and conducting extensive searches.

9/11 memorial in New York opens to public

New York, September 13: The National September 11 Memorial here was opened to the public Monday, a decade after the 2001 terror attacks that brought down the World Trade Center.

The tree-filled memorial has pools, and the names of those who died in the attacks are inscribed on the bronze panels that surround them, Xinhua reported.

City officials, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and many of those who helped create the memorial were present at the site to welcome the first visitors.

Recession effect to last 10 years: Report

London, September 13: The effects of the global economic crisis could be felt in Britain for as long as 10 years, says a new report.

A report released Monday by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says the government has “cushioned” Britons from the adverse effects of the recession, according to the Daily Express.

The report warned that household incomes will suffer more and more “as the Treasury unfolds its deficit-busting package of austerity measures”, including 80 billion pounds (around $126 billion) of spending cuts.

Pakistan Army officer held for theft

Islamabad, September 13: A serving army major in Pakistan has been arrested for theft of copper cable from a railway wagon.

The officer, Major Ayub, was taken into custody over the theft from the wagon of the Pakistan Railways, reported Dawn Tuesday.

A station master and two goods booking clerk also have been arrested.

The stolen cable had been sold in Gujrat district.

Rs.1.8 million has been recovered, said an official.

The media report did not explain how an entire wagon was stolen.

Mumbai, September 13: Ace fashion photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha died here early Tuesday following a massive heart attack, family sources said. He was 61.

“It was a heart attack and it happened in the morning. It was his birthday on 16th of this month, so just three days before he passed away. It’s really sad,” celebrity photographer Daboo Ratnani told IANS.

‘People’s strike’ in Telangana hits coal production

Hyderabad, September 13: Coal production in the government-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) came to a grinding halt Tuesday as its over 100,000 workers joined a ‘people’s strike’ demanding a separate state of Telangana be carved out of Andhra Pradesh, an official said.

Work in 50 mines spread over Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts in Telangana region came to a standstill as the employees began the indefinite strike Tuesday morning on the call of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC).

Nine Muslim men in jail for Malegaon blasts are innocent, concludes NIA: Sources

Mumbai, September 13: NDTV has learnt that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has finally concluded that the nine Muslim men who were arrested and jailed in 2006 in connection with the Malegaon blasts are innocent.

Five years ago, these men were accused of carrying out the twin blasts as part of a plot by the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). But sources have told NDTV that the investigation agency will now not oppose their bail pleas when they come up in court. Thirty one people were killed and 312 were injured in the 2006 blasts.

Hot, humid day ahead in Delhi

New Delhi, September 13: A hot and humid Tuesday lies ahead for Delhiites with the possibility of light rain in some areas, the Met office said.

The minimum temperature was recorded two notches above average at 27.4 degrees Celsius, said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum temperature is likely to be around 35 degrees Celsius, he added.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was recorded at 82 percent.

A total of 2 mm of rain was recorded till 8.30 a.m. in the ridge area of Delhi within the last 24 hours.

Burqa remark : Jamia to suspend lecturer

New Delhi,September 13 :The Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to file a case against a guest lecturer at the Centre for Management Studies (CMS) for alleged derogatory remarks during a lecture last Friday. Students have complained that the lecturer said a burqa did not suit a management student.

The university said the remarks were “communal”. Jamia Registrar S M Sajid said the guest lecturer had made some derogatory remarks about students wearing hijab. The students submitted an application to the Dean, demanding action against the lecturer.

Mumbai, September 13: The Hyderabad police on Sunday arrested four global distributors of SpeakAsia from Mumbai in the mutli-crore fraud.

The arrested accused are Ravi Khanna (44), Shaikh Rais Latif (32), Deepankar Sarkar (35) and Rahul Pannalal Shah (50). While Khanna operated Seamless Outsourcing, Latif was the technical consultant for Tulsient Information System Pvt Ltd. Shah ran Herna Ventures Pvt Ltd (HVL), a sister concern of SpeakAsia run by main accused, Singapore-based Harendra Kaur.

New tool can ensure better safety on planes

Washington, September 13: Researchers have developed an instrument for fine tuning an airplane’s digital flight-data recorder or “black box” so that it can pre-empt crashes and ensure greater safety for passengers.

John Hansman, professor of aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), says that current methods of analyzing black box data might miss vital information bearing on flight safety.

Accordingly, Hansman and colleagues at MIT and in Spain have devised the tool to spot glitches even before mishaps are triggered, according to an MIT statement.

New Delhi, September 13: Amid intense speculation about Sonia Gandhi’s health, the Congress party says its president is recuperating after a surgery in the US but no visitors are allowed to meet her.

Many Congress functionaries are reluctant to discuss Gandhi’s health condition. Most of those who are ready to discuss the subject request that they should not be identified by name or designation.

Amar Singh under observation, say doctors

New Delhi, September 13: Rajya Sabha member and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was under observation Tuesday here at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a kidney-related ailment, doctors said.

Amar Singh was shifted from the Tihar Jail to AIIMS Monday evening.

Amar Singh was arrested Sep 6 for his alleged involvement in an attempt to bribe MPs ahead of the July 2008 parliament trust vote.

A medical report on Amar Singh is expected to be released by 11 a.m., an AIIMS doctor told IANS.

Islamabad, September 13: The fallout of 9/11 “continues to poison the atmosphere”, taking a daily toll, said a Pakistani daily.

“As the commemorative days pass and the tears dry and the event that changed the world for all of us fades once more into the background; the fallout continues to poison the atmosphere,” an editorial in the News International said Tuesday, two days after the tenth anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001 terror attacks in the US that left nearly 3,000 dead.

Ahmedabad, September 13: A man has been arrested for sending the email threatening of a bomb blast in the city after the Delhi blast, police said in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Manu Oza, the arrested man, allegedly sent the email to the Delhi police immediately after the blast outside the Delhi High court on September 7. He had used the name of a most-wanted terrorist from US agency FBI’s list.

Amar Singh in hospital, bail plea hearing today

New Delhi, September 13: Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, arrested for his alleged role in 2008 cash-for-vote scam, was on Monday night admitted in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) following a rise in keratin level in his body, Tihar jail spokesman Sunil Gupta said.

Amar Singh was hospitalised late on Monday evening at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital, just a day before the court is to decide on his interim bail.

Islamic clerics weigh against music, buffets at marriages

Lucknow, September 13: Up in arms against music and buffet meals at Muslim marriages, a group of Islamic clerics have announced they would not conduct a “nikaah” (wedding ceremony) wherever the hosts played music or threw a buffet party.

According to Uttar Pradesh Imam Sangathan president Maulana Tamkeem Ahmad, at least half a dozen marriages in Muzaffarnagar had to be postponed because the clerics refused to perform the ceremony over the past five days.

Indore, September 13: A police inspector, Ramkishore Shivhare has been suspended and was arrested as he has been accused of making obscene MMS clips after abducting two girls.

The shocking incident occurred in Indore and the police official was sacked under article 311 of the Constitution.
