Train services to come to standstill in Telangana

Hyderabad, September 23: Rail services across Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh will come to a standstill from Friday night as trains scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled in view of the two-day blockade by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC).

The rail blockade, the second in less than three months, will snap the link between Hyderabad and other destinations in south and north India. The rail transport between Telangana and two other regions of the state will also be paralysed.

SC rejects Sadhvi Pragya bail plea

New Delhi, September 23: The Supreme Court today refused to grant bail to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who is facing charges under MCOCA for her alleged involvement in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case.

Dismissing her bail plea, a bench of Justice JM Panchal and Justice HL Gokhale said, “There is no merit in the petition”.

The bench passed the order on a petition filed by Thakur contending that Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had failed to file the charge sheet against her within the mandatory 90 days of her arrest on October 23, 2008.

Madinah, September 23: A defective education strategy was a major factor in the spread of the “takfir” ideology among young Muslim men and women, according to two scholars who spoke at a seminar on the phenomenon in Madinah.

Saina Nehwal Enters Quarters of Japan Open

Tokyo, September 23: India’s ace shuttler Saina Nehwal entered the quarterfinals of the Japan Open Superseries event with a 21-17, 21-16 victory over Mingtian Fu of Singapore in the second round here Thursday.

Saina will meet Mingtian’s compatriot Juan Gu in a last eight match Friday.

The other Indians in the fray crashed out of the tournament by losing their second round matches.

World No. 23 Parupalli Kashyap went down 15-21, 21-6, 18-21 to sixth seed Jin Chen of China in the men’s singles event.

Azhar to campaign against superbikes?

Hyderabad, September 23: Former Indian captain Mohammad Azahruddin is reportedly considering joining an NGO for a campaign targeted at discouraging the youngsters from riding superbikes.

It was a superbike gifted by him on the occasion of Eid that claimed the life of his younger son Ayazuddin and nephew on September 11 in Hyderabad.

Azhar’s nephew, Ajmal died few hours after the accident while Ayazuddin succumbed to the injuries five days later.

Strike called off but city still stinks

Hyderabad, September 23: The two-day flash strike by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) employees and workers was called off on Thursday afternoon after GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu assured the striking staff that incidents like the one that took place on Tuesday wouldn’t be repeated.

Police had on Tuesday arrested a few GHMC Telangana joint action committee leaders (TJAC) for allegedly forcing employees to boycott work. The breakthrough came after protracted talks between the commissioner and the TJAC leaders.

New Delhi, September 23: Zayed Khan couldn’t have been a happier man. Just days before the release of his debut production “Love Breakups Zindagi”, the actor has become a father for the second time!

Zayed’s wife Malaika gave birth to their second baby boy in Mumbai Thursday night, the actor’s sister, jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali confirmed to IANS.

“The baby was born at Breach Candy Hospital around 9.30 p.m. Both — mother and baby — are doing fine. God bless them,” said Farah, who is one of Zayed’s sisters apart from Susanne Roshan, via SMS.

Gulal thrown at mosque, communal tension rises

New Delhi, September 23: On September 6, a tussle between the police and the Ganesh Mandal took place when the latter became adamant for taking the procession from the areas dominated by the Muslims. When confronted by the police, the members of the Ganesh Mandal turned violent and deliberately threw Gulal at the mosque. This act led to the communal tension and the violent mob then set the shops and homes adjacent to the mosque on fire. A man named Shaikh Asif, a Railway Police employee has been severely injured in the incident.

NASA satellite to crash on earth on Friday, may miss North America

Washington, September 23: A six-ton NASA satellite that is on course to crash back to Earth on Friday is not expected to hit North America, the US space agency said in its latest update.

“Re-entry is expected sometime during the afternoon of September 23, Eastern Daylight Time. The satellite will not be passing over North America during that time period,” NASA said in an update issued Thursday at 7:44 am (1144 GMT).

“It is still too early to predict the time and location of re-entry with any more certainty, but predictions will become more refined in the next 24 to 36 hours.”

IIT Kanpur student commits suicide

Kanpur, September 23: A student of Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) was found hanging from his hostel room, police in this Uttar Pradesh town said Friday, suspecting that he was depressed over a failed love affair.

Mahtab Ahmed, 18, a first year student of B.Tech material science and engineering from Kannauj, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his room Thursday.

While no suicide note was found, police believe Ahmed was in depression, as evident from the writing on the walls of his room.

More power cuts in the offing as shortage touches 12.6 MU

Hyderabad: September 23: The Energy Department on Thursday appealed to the general public to conserve power, especially in view of shortage due to the on-going general strike in the Telangana region.

According to energy department, present scarcity of coal and gas due to non-availability, transport problems and subsequent decrease in inflows into the reservoirs has led to severe shortage of power to the extent of around 12.6 MU per day. The department said that was inevitable to impose load shedding to ensure grid stability due to shortage.

AP gets Rs 400 crore from NABARD for irrigation scheme

New Delhi, September 23: The National Bank for Rural and Agriculture Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs 399.22 crore to Andhra Pradesh under RIDF XVII for Indira Jala Prabha project being implemented in 22 districts with a total project cost of Rs 875 crore and the balance amount coming from MGNREG Programme. With this sanction,
NABARD has so far sanctioned Rs 1116 crore to State Government during the year 2011-12 surpassing normative allocation of Rs 1056 crore.

Chidambaram offered to resign over 2G: sources

New Delhi, September 23: In a new twist in the 2G controversy, sources have told that Home Minister P Chidambaram had offered to resign when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called him. Sources say this prompted the prime minister to wholeheartedly back his home minister.

Suspended Sanjeev Bhatt alleges harassment by Modi Govt.

New Delhi, September 23: Suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, seeking relief in a 1990 case related to alleged police atrocity, on Thursday told the Gujarat high court he was being “harassed” by the state government as he has made allegations against Chief Minister Narendra Modi regarding the 2002 riots.
