Sonia being unwell, PRP merger likely to put off

Hyderabad, August 5: Praja Rajyam Party’s official merger with Congress is likely to be postponed since the Congress president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi is not well. Following PRP chief Chiranjeevi joining Congress it was decided to merge the parties between August 7 to 10. In this connection AICC chief had invited Chiranjeevi to Delhi.

Chiranjeevi will be given primary membership of the party on the occasion of formal merger. However Sonia Gandhi has left for America for surgery and she is advised to take rest for almost one month.

Prime Minister is no ‘holy cow’: Opposition

New Delhi, August 05: The Lokpal bill, which seeks to combat corruption in high places, was Thursday introduced in parliament amid protests from Gandhian Anna Hazare and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which objected to the prime minister’s exclusion from its ambit while in office.

The most vocal opposition in the Lok Sabha came from BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, who said the prime minister cannot be treated as “holy cow”, more so when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had no objection to be investigated by the Lokpal or ombudsman.

Fresh bomb rocks Maiduguri, kills 2

Maiduguri, August 05: TWO people were confirmed dead yesterday while two others were seriously injured in a bomb blast that rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, even as Islamic sect, Boko Haram, accused northern governors of hypocrisy in their inconsistent policies.

The blast which occurred at about 7 a.m., along Baga Road within the metropolis, was followed by gun fire from suspected members of Jamaatyul Ahlis Sunnah lid Daawa wal Jihad popularly known as Boko Haram.

During Ramzan, no one notices Kashmir’s fasting teachers

Srinagar, August 05: For the past week, dozens of contractual college teachers in Kashmir Valley have been on an indefinite fast in Srinagar demanding a wage hike. But theirs could be a lost cause at a time when most locals are busy fasting for entirely different reasons.

The teachers’ agitation seems to have gone unnoticed as in Mumlim-dominated Jammu and Kashmir, most people are observing a dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy month of Ramzan that began Tuesday.

SM Bilal invited for conference to be held in America

Hyderabad, August 5: Mr SM Bilal staff reporter (crime) Siasat daily Hyderabad will leave for journalists’ conference to be held from August 11 to 13 at Detroit America. The journalists’ conference is being organized by Asian-American Journalists Association in which journalists of various countries of the world will take part. The conference will review various issues and challenges faced by the journalists.

Sonia Gandhi has surgery in US, Rahul to take charge of Congress

New Delhi, August 05: Congress President Sonia Gandhi is unwell and is currently in America for treatment, said her party on Thursday. She has been operated upon. The party did not indicate any other details of Mrs Gandhi’s health.

Congress spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi told the media, “Mrs Gandhi was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and upon the advice of her doctors, has travelled abroad for surgery.”

London, Auguat 05: A young woman from the U.K. has a rare and mysterious condition that causes her stomach to bloat to the size of a pregnant woman every time she eats, reported.
 
Kerri Dowdswell, 23, of Cannock, Staffordshire, usually wears a size 10 jeans except for when she eats a meal. That’s when her stomach becomes so bloated, people assume she is several months pregnant.
 
A few hours later, Dowdswell’s stomach shrinks back to its normal size – until she eats again.
 
Dowdswell said she must wear maternity pants while eating.

Aircraft crashes; pilot, girl killed

Lucknow, August 05: A Jaguar fighter aircraft crashed in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, killing pilot Siddhart Pandey and an 18-year-old girl who was working on the fields. The incident occurred at 12.30 p.m. The aircraft had taken off from the Gorakhpur airbase.

A senior police officer here said the plane first hit an overhead high voltage electricity cable and then a tree before crashing on the ground.

900 vacancies in revenue department to be filled

Hyderabad, August 05: A new notification to fill up 900 posts in the revenue department would be announced by AP Public Service Commission by the end of August, revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day Joint Collectors’ conference, he said that among all government departments, revenue department is the biggest with 86,000 staff.

Fake passport racket busted

Hyderabad, August 05:  Police here today nabbed five persons who were allegedly preparing fake residential and identification documents for applicants seeking passports on Tatkal schemes and seized incriminating material from them.

Mohd Yousufuddin alias Yousuf, a passport agent along with his aides used to prepare fake documents including Voter ID and ration cards for passport applicants who did not have such documents, Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan told reporters.

New Delhi, August 05: There are some concerns for Those driving swanky SUVs – they may have to pay more for fuel if the government has its way.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is planning to do away with diesel subsidy for passenger cars though there are some concerns over how that can be implemented.

Expensive SUVs for driving pleasure and trucks carrying essential items, both get an equal fuel subsidy. But that is set to change. The government plans to remove the subsidy on diesel for passenger cars.

Muslim man sues after being fired because of his beard

SeaTac, August 05: A Muslim man from SeaTac who claims he was fired from his job as a security guard after refusing to shave his beard has filed a federal lawsuit against his former employer.

Abdulkadir Omar, 22, began working in Kent for California-based American Patriot Security in May 2009. He said no one told him when he was hired that he would have to shave his beard, which he keeps closely trimmed and said is part of his Islamic faith.

Man gets 10 years in jail for raping 5-yr-old

New Delhi, August 05: Terming the offence as “abominable, inhuman and barbaric”, a trial court has sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a five-year-old girl. The court convicted the 20-year-old man, a resident of Dabri in south-west Delhi, after the victim and her 7-year-old brother identified him as the perpetrator of the crime.

Jerusalem, August 05: In Israel two researchers working at the Tel Aviv University claim to have invented a sensor which can detect date rape drugs in beverages with a high degrees of accuracy.

Date rape drugs, also known as “drink spiking”, have sedative, hypnotic, dissociative, and/or amnesiac effects, and can be added to a food or drink without the victim’s knowledge and help facilitate sexual exploitation.

4 cop booked for rape case

Manali, August 05: Manager of a hydro power project and four policemen have been booked for attempting to rape three women of Vashisht village who were offering prayers at the shrine of goddess Jogini on Wednesday evening.

However, the company management has registered a cross FIR against the villagers for assaulting them without reason.

The victims on Wednesday lodged a complaint against manager, Water Miller Power Company, Hari Babu and four policemen for outraging their modesty, tearing off their clothes and attempting to rape them.

Student made to strip by teacher in front of her classmates

Manila, August 05: A high school student from Zamboanga National High School West is considering transferring to another school after she was humiliated by her teacher in front of her classmates.

“Ana” (not her real name), a senior at the high school, said she and several of her classmates were body-searched by their class adviser after reports came out that money had been stolen from some of their classmates.

Ana said it was only her who was asked to remove her underwear.

The incident has led Ana to skip school for fear of being ridiculed.
