Modi’s aide named in Prajapati encounter case

Ahmedabad, August 12: The battle between top Gujarat cops and the Narendra Modi government has now intensified. In a fresh blow to the Gujarat state government, deputy inspector general (DIG) Rajnish Rai has named Modi’s close aide and former DGP PC Pande as a conspirator in the Tulsi Prajapati ‘fake’ encounter case.

In an affidavit submitted to the Central Administrative Tribunal, Rai accused Pande and officer OP Mathur — both known to be extremely close to Narendra Modi, of abusing their positions and for destruction of evidence.

Nosy US ‘advises’ India on Anna Hazare

Washington, August 12: Days before the proposed fast against corruption by social activist Anna Hazare August 16, the US said it hoped that India would exercise democratic restraint in dealing with peaceful protests.

China helping Pak route fake Indian currency

New Delhi, August 12: In what could turn out to be a major cause of concern for India, intelligence reports suggest that China is emerging as a possible source and channel for fake Indian currency notes.

According to a report accessed by a newspaper, fake currency worth crores is being sent via “staging posts” and “distribution networks (which) have been established in China,” and six other nations.

The report was prepared on March 17, 2011, by compiling key inputs from intelligence agencies such as the RAW, IB, DRI as well as investigative agencies like the CBI.

Parents jailed for torturing 3-year old

Idukki, August 12: The parents and grandfather of a 3-year old child were awarded jail term by a local court for for brutally torturing the child and chaining him at home with a dog as his lone companion.

Case was registered against Benny (28), his wife Manju (26) and Benny’s father Antony (57) after local people brought the plight of the hapless child to the notice of charity workers and police a couple of years back.

Wife, paramour held for killing man

Hyderabad, August 12: The Narayanaguda police today arrested a woman and her partner for murdering her husband at Himayathnagar in the city.

In a release, police said one T Rama Krishna was murdered by his wife T Laxmi and Makkal Babu with knife in an apartment at Himayathnagar yesterday.

Krishna, native of Narsipatnam at Visakhapatnam district, had come to Hyderabad 10 years back for his livelihood as a driver.

He married 28-year-old Laxmi 15 years back and had two children with her.

He later married 26-year-old T Bullemma seven years ago and was presently living with her.

Ghaziabad, August 12: An elderly man was stabbed to death in front of his four-year old grandson when he objected on a couple sitting in an objectionable position in a park in Indirapuram near the national capital, police said on Friday.

Woman, lover held for killing husband

Hyderabad, August 12: A woman and her paramour were arrested within 24 hours of killing the former’s husband at Himayathnagar. The murder took place on Wednesday night at Streeet No 5, Himayathnagar.

The deceased, T Rama Krishna, was a native of Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam and a driver. He was married to Lakshmi 15 years back and they have two children.

The couple used to live at Domalguda. Rama Krishna later married another woman, T Bullemma and was living with her in the city.

Woman-led gang held for fake currency racket

Hyderabad, August 12: A gang of seven, involved in preparing and circulating fake currency notes of various denominations, was busted by the Task Force sleuths on Thursday. The sleuths seized bogus currency worth Rs 5.14 lakh along with the material used in preparating them.

The gang was led by a woman identified as Shakera. Though Shakera and one of her associates Aqeel are absconding, the sleuths arrested other gang members – Mohammed Hassan, Mohammed Osman, Abdul Manaf, Mohammed Ghouse and Syed Sarfaraz.

President Rejects Mercy Petition of Gandhi Killers

New Delhi, August 12: President Pratibha Patil has rejected the mercy petition of three men sentenced to death for the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, an official said Thursday.

“The president rejected the mercy petition last week,” a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson told. The petitioners were Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, all linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The three along with an Indian woman, Nalini, were sentenced to death in 1999 for the assassination of Gandhi in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.

Syrian forces kill 11 in swoop on northern towns

Beirut, August 12: The Syrian army shot dead 11 people in a western town near the Lebanese border on Thursday and stormed a northwestern town near Turkey’s border, activists said.

The shooting in the western town of Qusair also wounded many others, according to several Syrian human rights and activists groups.

Anti-government protests are common in Qusair and, combined with the early morning assault on the town of Saraqeb near the Turkish border, reflected the determination of President Bashar Assad to crush the five-month old uprising despite mounting international condemnation.
